01. Famous Logo Redesigns of 2010 – So far so good!!!

“In the corporate world, a logo redesign is a two-pronged exercise. In simple words, it has its share of merits and demerits. On the positive side, a logo redesign can help build credibility and strengthen brand identity. While on the negative part, it can play a role in disrupting the image of the company. We witnessed a huge number of logo redesigns in 2009 and pretty much the same was expected in 2010 as well. Although it is too early to count the logo redesigns in the corporate world, but halfway through, there have been a number of mentionable logo redesigns this year. To wrap up the first five months of 2010, I have assembled a remarkable collection of 20 redesigned logos.” (Graphic Design Blog).

02. The Rise and Fall of the Philadelphia Commercial Museum

Though it has been all but forgotten in our time, the Philadelphia Commercial Museum served a crucial role in pushing the United States into international trade. Opened in 1897 and serving as the predecessor to the Bureau of International Commerce, the Commercial Museum taught business owners and schoolchildren alike about the world outside America’s borders. Read about the museum’s role in history here, and visit the institution through a digitized collection of photo album images taken at the height of the Commercial Museum’s influence, roughly 1910. (Independence Seaport Museum).

03. Fourth plinth: Yinka Shonibare’s message in a bottle (above)

“Nelson on his column looks distant and far away. Yinka Shonibare’s Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle, which has fetched up on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, looks delicate and small in its clear plastic bottle, stopped by an oversized cork and sealed with wax. Less a sculpture than a symbol, it is almost kitsch, and mounted on a vaguely nautical wooden stand whose portholes are actually air vents, whose hidden whirring fans prevent the whole thing from steaming up with condensation – though I rather like the idea of the ship looming in a bottled fog. Shonibare’s work is the sort of thing one might come across in a coastal shopping mall, and it sits on the plinth as though on a mantelpiece. I suppose I oughtn’t to like it; but I do, very much. It brings out the little boy and the sailing pond admiral in me. Perhaps it appeals to a rather conservative sort of artistic taste, like Jeff Koons’s giant, flower-covered puppy, which stands outside the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao (and which has led locals to dub the museum “the doghouse”). But then I’m fond of the mutt too.” (Guardian).

04. Wright Sale of Scandinavian Design

“On the 25th of May, Wright in Chicago will hold its second 20th Century Design sale of 2010, this time focusing on Scandinavian design. Wright has included  mostly early to mid century design, but many of the works are of exceptional quality.” (Detnk).

MUCU Notebooks

Selectism - MUCU Notebooks

While Moleskine’s notebooks are just fine, they’re pretty ubiquitous these days. And it goes without saying that Selectism isn’t about the commonplace. Hence we’ve been taken of late by these artisan-made notebooks from Japanese brand MUCU. Each piece is hand-finished in the firm’s compact Tokyo workshop and made using mainly untreated materials including canvas, tarpaulin and newspaper-grade stock. The aim is to restore to everyday life contact with unabashedly raw textures that age nicely over an extended period. And these are tools for prolonged use, stresses the maker.

We particularly like the ring-bound leather notebooks, and also the austere cardboard version with external canvas binding detailing its composition: a pocketable equivalent of the exposed structures of industrial space, if you like. Available from rakuten.co.jp (English site) or Aoyama’s Spiral Market if you happen to be in Tokyo. Despite the artisanal tag, from four bucks or so they’re not so expensive if you’re after something a bit more exclusive than Muji and Moleskine. (Darren Gore contributed this story)

Selectism - A.P.C. Checkered Shorts

Ah yes, the checkered short. The be all end all of love/hate in the wide world of short pants. Personally, I think that short pants work almost better than long pants when paired in the Summer. I for one would not dare wear the long version of these (nor say madras) in the cold months, but give me some sun and I’ll try it all (well, not all). Coggles has them.

Audio-Technica Bijoué Portable Speakers

Selectism - Audio-Technica Bijoué Portable Speakers

When it comes to electronics there is no doubt the Japanese (and Asia for that matter) tend to get the good shit first. Check these portable speakers from Audio-Technica. “Audio-Technica today in Japan announced [JP] diamond-shaped portable speakers, dubbed Bijoué/AT-SPF30, which are especially geared towards female users. Technically, the speakers aren’t special: you’ll get 600mW/φ28mm full range speakers running on two AAA batteries for 33 hours continuously. Weighing just 105g, the Bijoué speakers is sized at 78×74×37mm. Audio-Technica doesn’t try to attract geeky female buyers just with the design and size but with a functional hook as well: when opening up the diamond speaker, users will find a small mirror behind the lid.” (crunchgear)

“The Manly Art: Bare-Knuckle Prize Fighting in America” Book by Elliont Gorn

Selectism - "The Manly Art: Bare-Knuckle Prize Fighting in America" Book by Elliont Gorn

Originally published in 1986, Elliot J. Gorn’s The Manly Art: Bare-knuckle Prize Fighting in America The Manly Art: Bare Knuckle Prize Fighting in America Book by Elliont Gorn was updated and re-released earlier this year. Gorn goes to great lengths to capture the history of the sport in America. By the 1860s, boxing began to receive considerable attention (mostly because bouts were illegal) and had given rise to a new breed of working class hero. These details figure in a finely tuned story that questions gender, class, and ethnicity while positioning the issue of masculinity within the economic constructs of industrialization.

Gorn has updated the bibliography, and also provides an afterward musing on his achievement and the changes to studies of sports and culture since his landmark publication first appeared. Gorn is professor of American Civilization at Brown University.

The Manly Art is published by Cornell University Press. Available now from Amazon The Manly Art: Bare Knuckle Prize Fighting in America Book by Elliont Gorn.

Selectism - Tomorrowland Spring 2010 Looks

Fashionisto highlights the latest from Tomorrowland for Spring 2010. The imagery and styling is about as good as it gets. As told, “Alexander Johansson puts on a smile to model the latest from Tomorrowland. With an eclectic sense of style, Americana essentials are blended with the colorful touches of a summer jet-setter venturing to the world’s most exotic destinations.” The clean looks and cuts should work for all the guys.

Selectism - Mr. Hare Autumn/Winter 2010 Looks

We first mentioned Mr. Hare some time ago before their 2009 launch. Today, he’s back with a collection for Autumn which is sure to get some hungry. In his words. “For me the AW10 collection was inspired by the city of Paris. The cigarette smoke stain that a smoking ban can’t erase. The shitty clubs. The chic fight. The never appearing taxis. The snooty girls. The complex. The language. The Attitude. God! I love that city. I remember standing under the Eiffel Tower aged 10, with all my classmates and marveling at the sheer decadence of pure aesthetic, Paris had, but London had never struck me with. Paris had an air and it was graceful.”
