Disfarmer Photographs at Mass MOCA

24 May 2010, 18.39 | Posted in Art | 1 comment »

selectism - disfarmer photographs at mass moca

We’ve highlighted a few photography exhibitions that have some connection to menswear – overt or otherwise.

Mass MOCA’s current exhibition of Mike Disfarmer has an indirect work wear theme. The artist took intimate portraits of the people of Heber Springs, Arkansas, over a six year period beginning in 1939. What makes them exception is the process. Long after the technique became obsolete, Disfarmer continued to utilize glass plate photography. The result is honest portraiture, the sitter choosing exactly how to present themselves during the often laborious process.

In the 1970s, thousands of glass plate negatives were discovered, revealing the wealth of Disfarmer’s output. Disfarmer Photographs celebrates Disfarmer’s artistry and his dedication to documenting the American heartland.

On view through December 31, 2010.

Journal Standard Contrast Placket Shirt

Selectism - journal-standard-contrast-placket-shirt-01

Contrast collars and plackets are always risky business on shirts. There’s always the dreaded risk of looking ‘zany’; This Journal Standard shirt avoids that trap by using some tastefully contrasting patchwork madras. As a detail, It’s hit and miss – the white and blue colourways are proof of this – but when it works, it’s a very nice touch. As usual, get your proxy on.  (Style Cruise)

More looks after the leap.

Kenton Sorenson iPad Portfolio

Selectism - kenton-sorenson-ipad-portfolio-01

Some people were incredibly quick off the mark with the iPad cases but, as you’d expect from a company who still make their stuff handmade, Kenton Sorenson have taken their time. This portfolio is much like their laptop portfolio – natural leather, handmade, the whole shebang – and it’ll age just as gracefully. The price is also a (relatively) reasonable $140 too, not that price should be an issue if you’ve got the spare coins for an iPad #jealousandhating. (Context)

B-Store Denim Bomber Jacket

Selectism - b-store-denim-bomber-jacket-01

Bomber jackets are always gonna be a good look to us, so this denim one by B-Store was always gonna get the heads up. Named the Brixton – we’re not sure why either – this bomber jacket is a light denim one, perfect for a cold spring day. The price is a little steep in comparison to the regular Baracuta but until they make a denim one, we can’t complain too much. (B Store)

Take a leap, see those shots.

Print Fetish turn us onto this segsy magazine rack. While we’re still on the lookout for a good looking magazine rack that can handle our back catalogue of magazines, display pieces like this will do in the interim. Holding 12 magazines and costing $57, it’s a piece for the folks who spend far too much on magazines to actually buy an expensive magazine rack. [UMA Store]

Selectism - MAKR for Acrimony Two Tone Flap Wallet

We have sung the praises of the MAKR flap wallet many times over (full disclosure: I’ve been using mine for a year now – jc). The Horween leather wallet turns buttery soft after about a month’s wear. Looks like Acrimony loves them as well. They have just worked with MAKR on a two tone version of the wallet. We’re sure Acrimony will have them in stock shortly.

Selectism - Surface to Air Wire Shirt

Brigade has stock on this wire shirt in red from Surface to Air. A simple selvedge detail is prominent on the breast pocket. The striped as also properly sized to give them an almost “hickory” style finish. Overall the shirt looks great. For those who may avoid red as a solid color shirting option, this may well be your middle ground.

01. Recycled Skateboard Art by Haroshi

“Haroshi makes these crazy art pieces recycling old used skateboards. The most important style of Haroshi’s three-dimensional art piece is the wooden mosaic. In order to make a sculpture out of a thin skateboard deck, one must stack many layers. But skate decks are already processed products, and not flat like a piece of wood freshly cut out from a tree. Moreover, skateboards may seem like they’re all in the same shape, but actually, their structure varies according to the factory, brand, and popular skaters’ signature models. With his experience and almost crazy knowledge of skateboards, Haroshi is able to differentiate from thousands of used deck stocks, which deck fits with which when stacked.” (trendland)

02. Up There (video / above)

“Here is the final documentary. We’re very excited to bring these painters’ story down to sidewalk level, for everyone to see. Concept: Mother NY; Production Co: Mekanism; Director/DP/Editor: Malcolm Murray; Music by The Album Leaf; Painters: Colossal Media/Sky High Murals/Bob Middleton; Presented by Stella Artois”

03. America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places

“Today, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Black Mountain in Harlan County, Ky. to its 2010 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.  This annual list highlights important examples of the nation’s architectural, cultural and natural heritage that are at risk for destruction or irreparable damage.” (coudal>preservationnation)

04. Embroidered Wonder Bread [food art]

“Artist Catherine McEver uses an unexpected medium for her embroidery projects: Wonder Bread. Working “very, very carefully,” she stitches the colorful floss into scenes from nature (chicken, fish, flowers), and an homage to Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” If you’re thinking these pieces are some sort of commentary on temporality, think again: says McEver, “I have a couple of slices that are over four years old that look just like new.” Gives new meaning to “wonder,” huh? Additional pictures below.” (eatme)
