Selectism - Adam Kimmel Bags for Autumn/Winter 2010

Colette carries the “Mini collection of Adam Kimmel bags, canvas briefcases, backpack and pouch bag.” They are simply outfitted in black on black on black. In fact they’re so solid in nature that the photos may not do them justice. But we think you get the point. Find them now.

CXXVI Scrimshaw Pocket Knife

Selectism - CXXVI Scrimshaw Pocket Knife

My father gave me a Portuguese pocket knife a few years ago. He gets very pissed off when it is recalled and not at my disposal. We think you need one as well (it does not have to be Portuguese). Of course, we would recommend removing it for flights, but a good pocket knife should be at hand for every gent. Here’s a Made in Maine, USA scrimshaw knife found over on Blackbird. “Two blade pocket knife hand etched in a small workshop in Maine. The scrimshaw is inked with black india ink and sealed with 2 coats of archival wax to protect the intricate design and to enhance the beauty of the ivory. The knife handle is bone and measures 4 1/8″ folded.”

Pitti | Nigel Cabourn Sailor Shirt for Spring 2011

Selectism - Pitti | Nigel Cabourn Sailor Shirt for Spring 2011

Esquire is live from Pitti Uomo as well this week. They featured this shirt from the Nigel Cabourn Spring 2011 collection. “Some things were never meant to be combined, like televisions and refrigerators, while others go together so well that we’re left knocking our foreheads. Why didn’t we think of this before? That was the feeling when we saw the ridiculous combo of sailor sweater and oxford shirt at Nigel’s booth here at Pitti. As with all the meticulously researched and tweaked garments he makes, this one is special; constructed using an originally designed Japanese oxford fabric with a perfect slim fit.” We’ll be seeing more from this collection soon.

Tall in the Saddle: 100 Years of the Pendleton Round-Up

selectism - Tall in the Saddle: 100 Years of the Pendleton Round-Up

We all know Pendleton Woolen Mills. But, what do we know about the town of Pendleton, Oregon?

Frankly, nothing.

Good thing for us, the Oregon Historical Society is currently celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the Pendleton Round-Up. The event was devised in 1910 to give the town a signature event. Founding president Roy Riley laid it down, “Pendleton, like lots of other good towns, is pretty quiet, it’s asleep.  Let’s wake it up.  We can’t hold a Rose Carnival like Portland, nor a Cherry Fair like Salem, nor a Regatta and Naval Pageant like Astoria, but we can give any town on the map cards and spades and win out hands down when it comes to bronco busting.”

The exhibition includes all sorts of good artifacts, photographs, and stories, outlining 100 years of the cowboy classic.

Images from the show and a brief video follow. Always fun to learn a little something about the towns that birthed important brands. Real heritage, if you will…

Tall in the Saddle closes on July 4, 2010.

Paul Smith Oversized Beach Towel

Selectism - Paul Smith Oversized Beach Towel

Tired of hitting the sands in that Hard Rock Hotel towel you stole during your last stay in Vegas? If you, like me, are looking for something new to catch the Sun with, consider this striped towel from the Paul Smith collection. It’s finished in the expected striped rainbow that Paul Smith is known for. The towel is an oversized specimen that can easily accommodate two or three. Por Vocacao has them. On that note, here’s hoping Portugal take the N. Koreans on Monday.

Selectism - Pitti | Buttero "Naturally Collection" Spring/Summer 2011 Preview

As many of you are aware, Pitti Uomo is in full swing over in the lovely Italian city of Florence. The good people at Buttero thought we would like to get a preview of what they’re showing as part of their Spring 2011 footwear offering for men. Their “Naturally” collection showcases their reworking of the textiles and molds around the classic trainer silhouette. Some complex twists (seen in the gallery) in leather offer excellent takes on this look but the outsole is really the pleaser here. They’re baked in with spot color which gives it a beautiful splatter (marbled) finish.

Photography | Amir Zaki “Relics”

selectism - Photography | Amir Zaki "Relics"

Amir Zaki, a graduate of Master’s of Fine Arts program at the University of Calfornia and Professor of Photography and Digital Technology at the University of California-Riverside, describes his photographs of disused lifeguard stands as portraiture. The set, entitled “Relics,” certainly captures a bygone era of the SoCal coast. But, it also captures the present.

On one level, relics. On the other, icons. For some reason the theme to Baywatch keeps playing in my mind…

That said, Zaki’s art is a damn sight more cerebral than Hasselhoff’s craft. (via Daily Icon).

Studio D’Artisan 30th Anniversary Loopwheel Sweatshirt

Selectism - studio-dartisan-loopwheel-anniversary-sweat-01

Here’s more sale picks and this is one is genuine bargain. And yes, £125 for this piece is a bargain. If you’d ever felt one of these, you wouldn’t even be hesitating, it’s the sweatshirt equivalent of 1200 thread count bedsheets. We’re not exaggerating here, it’s that smooth. The only problem you’ll have with this shirt is stopping your partner from stealing it. (Superdenim)
