Selectism - tommy-ton-pitti-08

GQ have sent Tommy Ton, of Jak and Jill fame, to cover the menswear street style at Pitti Uomo. As to be expected from the Sart’s favourite destination, there’s more gentlemanly inspiration than you can shake a walking stick at. We’ve included a few of our favourites after the leap and you can view the whole thing here.

Oki-Ni | H By Harris Interview

Selectism - h-by-harris-interview

Oki-Ni have a nice chat with H by Harris up on their site. They go into it about store’s buying habits, why Harris won’t be making seasonal collections and investment pieces. One choice quote is when Harris was asked about the difficulties of getting new talent into magazines.

There’s no one giving any direction. It’s the same with fashion magazines, the advertisers dictate what needs to be in the magazines, so fashion stories are diluted, at this point you realise that it is hard for new talent to come through. New brands are rarely showcased because the advertisers stipulate what is featured in each issue. So you think, what’s the point of anyone going to design college if only a small handful of people are going to get through?

01. Furniture Inspired by Indie Music (Above)

“G. is a furniture project designed, manufactured and sold by GPOD. It is inspired on what Indie represents within the music industry. By remaining independent it conquers the space for pure reflection, and for defining its own set of operating rules – aesthetically and otherwise. Its reflection, more than formal, is mostly about the social and economical aspects surrounding the design industry. It is aimed at understanding quality and the necessary mechanisms to achieve it, as well as how design products become part of everyone’s lives.” (David Report).

02. Jaguar XJ

“With an eye towards sustainability, Jaguar is making a distinct effort to refresh its old English image with the introduction of the 2011 XJ, the luxury carmaker’s flagship model. Constructed from 50 percent recycled aluminum, the XJ is something of a lightweight compared to previous iterations. Its riveted and glue-bonded unibody—derived from aerospace technology—makes for a lighter weight skin than steel without compromising safety, increasing the vehicle’s efficiency tenfold. The use of aluminum saves six tons of carbon per vehicle over its lifetime.” (Cool Hunting).

03. Fair report: new showcase +20 Egypt Design, Cairo

“Of all the recent additions to our fair calendar this year, we didn’t expect to see an Egyptian design event coming. Last week, the ‘City of a Thousand Minarets’ made its international debut with +20 Egypt Design, a new showcase being held over the next five years, thus named for the country’s calling code.” (Wallpaper*).

04. As Tough As It Gets: George “Elbows” McFadden In 1899

“When George McFadden passed away on May the 6th, 1951 Nat Fleischer, writing in Ring magazine, called him “a champion in any other era”. And that was pretty much it for George. Nobody has really had very much to say about this pioneering lightweight since his death. But in 1899, “Elbows” McFadden matched a true ring legend no less than three times – all over the scheduled distance of 25 rounds. These three duels, separated as they were by only a little more than six months, should be enough to seal his place in ring lore, but McFadden also found time to match the two other outstanding lightweights of perhaps the greatest era in the history of arguably the deepest division of all, champions Kid Lavigne and Frank Erne.” (Eastside Boxing).

Globe-Trotter for Hackett

globe trotter for hackett

Globe-Trotter has linked up with fellow English brand Hackett on a small capsule collection. By now you should know that we are big fans of the luggage brand, still today presenting some of the most classy, if not most practical, masterfully crafted luggage in the market.

“…Hackett has teamed up with Globe-Trotter on a portmanteau collection of hand-made, durable cases that are well worth checking in. The best bit? The spiffy linings: Prince of Wales check for the black Mayfair range, blue and white Bengal stripe for the navy London line and a Union Jack for the Aston Martin Racing set (in British Racing Green, natch). Give a whole new meaning to the phrase “matching luggage” whether you’re travelling to a business meeting or race meet.”

With prices starting at 490 Pounds, throwing in the 75 Pound service for adding your initials is a no-brainer.

Detailed images of the suitcases follow after the jump.

When looking at the big luxury houses from around the globe, you will rarely find one that manages to stay 100% true to their values. Over time you will always find products here and there where you think “How did this happen…”. One out of a very few that you cannot say this about is Hermès. Their timeless design and impeccable high quality is just as impressive today as it was when the brand was founded.

Selectism - Yamazaki: Japan's First Distillery in Kyoto

NOWNESS continues to reset the online world with its very forward and exclusive content plays; touching everything from fashion to spirits. Their latest is a profile on Japan’s first distillery, Yamazaki. “Tourists to Japan expect to drink two things: sake and green tea (preferably as part of the traditional, meticulous tea ceremony). But the land of the rising sun, which since the mid 20th century has displayed a knack for taking Western inventions and doing them much better than we ever did, is also a haven for whisky lovers—rivaling even Scotland for the production of single malts. One of the oldest of Japanese whiskies and the first to be distilled in the country, Yamazaki Whisky is produced just south-west of Kyoto, at a spot where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu tributaries join the Yodo River.”

Selectism - Eiffel Stools by Shigeki Fujishiro

Our Berlin office finds an interesting take on the stool from designer,Shigeki Fujishiro. As MRD says it, ”This three-legged stool design ideas is created by Japanese designer Shigeki Fujishiro. Dubbed as Eiffel Stool, this interesting seating design is designed in a minimal manner so the structure itself becomes form. Eiffel Stool is made out of a special paper developed in Europe, that consist of pure pulp and recycled paper. The material of this Eiffel Stool is prominent by means of durability, flexibility, weight, pliability, and insulation. Very earth-friendly material as excess during process can be recycled.”
