Capsule Spring/Summer 2011 | Yuketen

Selectism - yuketen-spring-2011-04

Yuketen have already been all over the blogs, but we’d be doing a disservice if we didn’t mention it. As folks who have experience using ‘workwear’ products should know, but a lot of it isn’t really suitable for typically ‘workwear’ activities (we don’t blame you if that sentence made your head spin, but it’s true). So, with that in mind, Yuketen’s focus is on making proper workwear that can live up to it’s name. (Photography: Munos)

Take a leap to see images of their bags and shoes.

Selectism - commune-paris-spring-2011-01

CDP’s stand at Capsule showcased their continued focus on wearable basics and, as not to give the game away too early, we’ve decided to focus on their accessories. Their weekend bags use their trademark buttons and there’s also some jewelery. Jewelery is still an iffy subject for a lot of men, but CDP’s is of the decidedly understated variety. And if, jewelery is a no go, the handsome weekend bags will surely be to your fancy.

01. London Underground | Time for Architecture

“Architecture is very much on the agenda this month. The biennial London Festival of Architecture in full swing, with events and activities taking place across the city, and four major institutions have just opened must-see exhibitions that do their best to critique the personal and domestic spaces we inhabit.” (NYT).

02. World Cup 2010: Harry Redknapp keen to be next England manager

“Harry Redknapp has made it clear that he would be keen to succeed Fabio Capello as England manager, should the FA decide it is time for another change at the helm of the national side. After England suffered their worst-ever World Cup finals defeat to Germany yesterday, Redknapp refused to say whether he thought Capello should be sacked but added that if they did he would be interested in the job.” (Guardian).

03. Crime Jazz Month: Roy Budd (The Stone Killer) | Above

“Roy Budd scored a ton of crime film classics (Diamonds, Fear Is The Key, Get Carter), the most of obscure of which is The Stone Killer starring Charles Bronson as a cop with questionable ethics who becomes embroiled in a 40 year long internecine Mob feud. It is lesser known than Bronson’s other two early 70s classics — The Mechanic and Death Wish — but equally as good.” (Bop and Beyond).

04. In the mind and heart of Droog design

“What can we say about Droog design, a company that since 1993 opens new paths to creativity and has produced some of the most iconic design pieces of the last decades? Some weeks ago Workshop-Dionisis Sotovikis and Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences presented at the Benaki Museum, Athens, Greece, a retrospective Droog exhibition called “Greek green greet” (June 4th – July 25th 2010), being the largest Droog exhibition in the world since 2007. Athens came closer to the design world and Renny Ramakers, the heart and soul of Droog, of course could not miss the event. Yatzer was there, eager to know all those little stories hidden behind a successful company that make the difference. Renny Ramakers talked to us in the most sincere way, offering one of the most interesting encounters we have ever had. Get ready to get inside the headquarters of one of the most significant design companies of all times!” (Yatzer).

Capsule Spring/Summer 2011 | The Local Firm

Selectism - local-firm-spring-2011-02

Although we’ve featured The Local Firm briefly before, the first time we really came across the brand was at Capsule. We’ll save some of the product shots for later, but for now here’s a look at their sunglasses. The only problem we have with these is how hard it’ll be to stop your partner from stealing them off you.

Capsule Spring/Summer 2011 | Oliver Spencer Baseball Jacket

Selectism - oliver-spencer-spring-2011-baseball-jacket

Kicking off our Capsule recap is Oliver Spencer, who have a handsome baseball jacket in the works for next spring. Although we snapped the red version, there’s a navy option if you’re a fan of the all blue everything look. As you’d expect from a spring jacket, it’s extremely lightweight, suitable for just about every weather – bar the sweltering heat we’re experiencing right now. Details-wise, we’re liking the burgundy buttons and contrast cuffs.

selectism - Photography | Malcolm Lightner

Native Floridian Malcolm Lightner practices in the American tradition of Southern Phototography. He’s concerned with narrative and capturing the depth of his subjects. The themes are often distinctly local – the Mile O’ Mud series (from which the above is drawn) documents a long-standing Florida tradition of swamp buggy racing.

Of the series Lightner says -

For me, the swamp buggy races became a metaphor for the complexities and conflicts of modern American life. For the past 60 years, the community has managed to protect this cultural event against continuing land development and shifting ideology. The struggle will be to preserve both its cultural and individual identity for future generations.

Lightner currently lives in New York where he serves as a member of the photography faculty at the School of Visual Arts. He continues to find inspiration in the peculiarities culturalof Southern culture.

More examples of Lightner’s work after the jump. (via Curated).

tape installation selectism 0 Tape Installation at Berlin DMY 2010

use/number built this large tape installation as part of Berlin DMY 2010. The installation took six people 4 days and 700 rolls of transparent tape to complete. The photos tell a much better story of what we’re looking at. The cost of the project was just around 380 euros. We should also add that use/number also won the DMY 2010 prize for their install. Congrats.

Lakeside Living: Waterfront Houses, Cottages, and Cabins of the Great Lakes Book

Selectism - Lakeside Living: Waterfront Houses, Cottages, and Cabins of the Great Lakes Book

A new coffee book has landed on the market for those who love the beauty of waterfront cottages and cabins – specifically on the Great Lakes: Lakeside Living Lakeside Living: Waterfront Houses, Cottages, and Cabins of the Great Lakes Book by Linda Leigh Paul, who happens to be a specialist on the subject. ”The lakeside home represents its owner’s love for the outdoors and passion for life on the water. Houses by the lake are designed to maximize the flow of air, the use of sunlight, and the views of the landscape. These Great Lakes homes range in style from converted barns and Prairie Style houses to modernist inspired dwellings but each is always a reflection of the style, taste and interests of their owners. The houses featured here illustrate an experimentation with materials and an economy of design. Residences are designed to be practical-many can “close up” during adventures in the out-of-doors and travels-and they exhibit an open-minded style in which to live. Great Lakes houses are modern yet sufficiently warm and inviting to provide comfort for life here. Capturing the universal desire to live on the water, the book will speak to waterside homeowners everywhere, and especially to residents of the seven U.S. states and two Canadian provinces that border the Great Lakes. With more than 250 images, Lakeside Living Lakeside Living: Waterfront Houses, Cottages, and Cabins of the Great Lakes Book is a book for all those who yearn for a life at the water’s edge.”

Available now from Amazon Lakeside Living: Waterfront Houses, Cottages, and Cabins of the Great Lakes Book.

Selectism - Kenzo Spring 2011 Runway

Carl over at Fashionisto gives us his take on the Kenzo Spring 2011 collection. “Departing Paris for a tour of the world, the Kenzo man took to many exciting influences for Antonio Marras’ latest outing for the label. From the simple beret and stripes to the subtle prints of the East or an urban safari, Marras delighted with a contemporary look that offered many facets. Whether tackling the world as an enlightened scholar or diving in head first as an anthropologist, the Kenzo man was outfitted for all occasions with the utmost style and grace.”
