Thom Browne’s own Spring/summer 2011 collection gave a very Bowie like Major Tom>Rocket Man take on their presentation. Astronauts (more like Cosmonauts if you consider that it was shown in the former French Communist Party building) showcased the looks. . As usual, simply excellent. “Patch-pocketed, shark-patterned, and crest-emblazoned sports jackets in gabardine, seersucker, and cotton madras, most worn with shorts that hit just above the knee. Proudly American touches like saddle shoes, repp ties, aviator sunglasses, and of course, this being Thom Browne, lots of red, white, and blue. In short, clothes for the man who’s not afraid to give his wardrobe a swift kick in the apogee.” (gq)

She has dressed many generations and types of men over the past decades, and her aesthetics looked as fresh as ever. Her clothes are always smart, uncomplicated and reliable wardrobe staples. I loved the fact that she used models from different age groups, demonstrating the broad appeal of her pieces. My personal favourites were the fringed leather jacket and lilac suit.”

ACNE was Paris yesterday for their first international menswear show presentation. As Johnny Johanssen mentions, “When I was thinking of my first international Menswear showing, Paris was the natural choice. And why Le Chateaubriand? For me it is about a fun night, great food and wine, sexy people and having fun either in a group or just watching. And why not turn a restaurant into a disco?”

Acne’s Menswear Collection for Spring/Summer 2011 is an exercise in juxtaposition. Jackets are small and tight whilst trousers are wide and flared. Proportions are challenged – waists become higher and tshirt’s become longer. Silhouettes are pushed across silks, jerseys, cotton, wool and microfibre pieces, in an attempt to create the perfect disco, school boy look.

Some sad news from the SWATCH camp. “Nicolas Hayek, one of the country’s best-known managers, has often been described as the savior of the Swiss watch industry, which nearly collapsed during the 1970s before Hayek’s Swatch group launched the plastic watch of the same name, which became an international success. ‘With deep sadness and regret we inform you that Nicolas G. Hayek unexpectedly passed away today due to heart failure during work at his beloved Swatch Group,’ the company said.” SWATCH changed the face of the watch market with it’s explosion in the USA and beyond during the 80’s and 90’s (and today).
