Balmain Spring 2011 Looks

Selectism - Balmain Spring 2011 Looks

More commentary  as well as images of the Balmain Men’s collection for Spring 2011. “Camouflage and leather are quite reflective of Balmain’s contemporary approach to the military motif. A step away from slender and fitted, the Balmain man gets a modest update that lends him more structure in terms of both shape and concept. From careless grunge to responsible recruit, Balmain seems to please with modest strides.” (fashionisto)

Seavees Bamboo Moc Chukka

Selectism - Seavees Bamboo Moc Chukka

A nice take on the mid top from Seavees. A “chukka boot in a canvas fabric with woven bamboo around rubber sole. Leather laces.” What is great about this shoe is that the canvas in the chukka form looks very casual due to the bamboo application and like many of their shoes, will probably look better with age. Need Supply has them.

01. Film: The Bowler

“Meet Rocky Salemmo. He’s a ramblin’ gamblin’ man. For the majority of his adult life Rocky has hustled bowling for a living. Here is his story. A short documentary about booze, broads and bowling. I hope you enjoy it.” (coudal)

02. Atomic Magazine: Cool Retro Style

“Atomic magazine was published from 1999-2004. Jeff Griffith was the co-publisher and creative director of this “essential guide to the retro revival.” He describes the magazine’s mission as “to bring back the best of a bygone era–the music, the clothing, and the lifestyle–and remind our readers what it means to have fun!” Atomic was filled with retro-styled design, typography, and photography, featuring tons of great talent. The design was lovingly styled to reflect the vintage look of the magazine. Fans of 40s-50s design and imagery will love the pages of Atomic. We’ve collected some covers and inside pages to celebrate the wonders of this great magazine project, a labor of love by Griffith and editor Leslie Rosenberg.” (spd)

03. Pole Dance Preview / SO-IL

“Even though these hot months can be a bit stifling, we’re excited because the summer means that the PS1 installation by SO-IL (catch our coverage of the winning proposal here) is almost ready for the public! Upon watching SO-IL’s competition entry video, we are patiently waiting to experience the physical manifestation of the Pole Dance’s conceptual ideas about making space. While you can expect full coverage of the project, thanks to our reader, Alan R Tansey, we can share a sneak peak of the Pole Dance installation with you today. Enjoy!” (archdaily)

04. World’s First Solar-Powered Blimp Set to Cross the English Channel

“The world’s first solar blimp, built by et Sol’r – a collaboration between students at engineering and technical schools in France. This measures 72 feet long and 18 feet wide and has a nylon and polyethylene aluminum frame. And it features semi-flexible solar cells that can generate up to 2.4 kilowatts that keeps the blimp moving at 25 mph. It has two big red propellers, which in turn are expected to send the ship across the Channel in under an hour.” (likecool)

Juun.J Spring 2011 Runway

Selectism - Juun.J Spring 2011 Runway

Fashionisto gives is their take on the JuunJ show in Paris this week. “The genius of Juun.J falls somewhere in between the modern appeal of his garments and the timeless grace with which his creations move. For the spring season, these attributes were felt as usual in the draping, but contrasted by the strong tailored structure of jackets. Exuding a look of protection, but creating fragile sheer layering with a relaxing refinement, Juun.J continued a natural progression that made a bold move to the biker jacket and quite the finish with electrifying numbers.”

Selectism - Henrik Vibskov Spring 2011 Runway

Supertalk tracked down a rather complete set of Spring 2011 shots from Henrik Vibskov runway show in Paris this week. For me, we’re looking at the first collection which has potential for mass acceptance. While some find it difficult to understand all the undertones of this work, Spring 2011 may knock the “aha!” into non believers. Let us know your thoughts…

Selectism - Balenciaga Spring/Summer 2011 Looks

While I’m not clear I enjoy the high waisted nature of the belting on many of these looks, the Balenciaga men’s collection for Spring 2011 makes its debut on Selectism. Tailored longtail coats in leather offer an interesting take for the season. Be sure to tell us your thoughts in the comments. (00o00)

selectism - "Andy Warhol: The Last Decade" at Brooklyn Museum of Art

Back in September, we mentioned the initial opening of Andy Warhol: The Last Decade at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The first major museum exploration of the artist’s final years, the most prolific decade of his 40-year career, the exhibition has shifted locations to the Brooklyn Museum of Art. On view there until September 12, 2010, it is one of the most exciting shows of the summer.

Get a sense of the spectacle, through the eyes of our photographer Jake Breinholt, after the jump.

Junya Watanabe Spring 2011 Runway

Selectism - Junya Watanabe Spring 2011 Runway

The model above is in no way as upset as you think. He’s just doing his job on the Junya Watanabe Spring 2011 runway. The ready to wear collection carrries a bit of a nautical theme. “Waterproof rain gear in red, yellow and navy worn with sturdy trousers cropped at the ankle exemplified Watanabe’s rugged, workwear approach. An array of striped navy and white sweaters, in collaboration with French naval knitwear maker Saint James, rounded out a charming collection, which steered clear of cliché and remained anchored in Watanabe’s world.” (wwd)

Selectism - Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2011 Detailed Bag Looks

We’re back with some more imagery from the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2011 runway show. We take a detailed look at those bags we fell in love with yesterday. The washed out pattered on the green handler above is really the first time we have fallen in love with the oversized monogram working. Is it vintage or new? We’re not sure, but damn, we want it. Of course, you have many other bags from Vuitton to choose from. Check the gallery.
