Selectism | Around the Web

01. Do typefaces really matter?

“The typeface matters because of its power to create a sense of recognition and trust, (Strawson) argues: “Everyone recognises the BBC just from three characters in Gill Sans. It’s an icon. If you wrote BBC in a flowery font people wouldn’t recognise it.”" (bbc)

02. Twitter mood maps reveal emotional states of America (above)

“America, are you happy? The emotional words contained in hundreds of millions of messages posted to the Twitter website may hold the answer. Computer scientist Alan Mislove at Northeastern University in Boston and colleagues have found that these “tweets” suggest that the west coast is happier than the east coast, and across the country happiness peaks each Sunday morning, with a trough on Thursday evenings. The team calls their work the “pulse of the nation”.” (new scientist)

03. Iconic CITGO Sign Will Go Dark

“Boston’s iconic CITGO sign will go dark this Friday, as the oil company that owns it plans to change the light bulbs on the sign that overlooks Kenmore Square and Fenway Park. The landmark sign will remain dark for two months. The sign has stood high above the Boston skyline since 1940, when it was erected on what was then a regional office for the Cities Services oil company. In 1965, the lighted logo was changed to read CITGO. The building currently houses the Boston University bookstore.” (wcvbboston)

04. Renowned street artist Banksy tags Detroit, ignites controversy

“Says Luis Croquer, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, “This may be unprecedented, because in most other cities, you wouldn’t be able to take a wall home… What does it mean to move a wall? And beyond legality, who does the wall really belong to, and now does the art belong to the gallery? To everybody? To nobody? We’re operating in this space where there’s this lawlessness that opens up possibilities that would be much harder to encounter in other cities.”"

Selectism - Umbro For Present Footballs (Soccer)

Sure the World Cup has come and gone (for some in the USA) but the truth is the sport lives on week after week around the world.  Going back through the archives we have found a few items we forgot to cover during the madness, including these one off balls from UMBRO for London’s Present shop. The black and white with the one off red panel gives them a distinct look. Throw in the UMBRO quality and they’re onto something useable on the field. (aod)

Selectism - Farah Vintage Autumn/Winter 2010 Looks

Gavin Watson, famous for his view of the “social unrest” in the 80’s England, shoots the Autumn/Winter 2010 lookbook for Farah Vintage. “This season the focus is on the iconic 80’s – a decade of social unrest, a time when the people needed to be heard, and a young generation dressed as a means of self-expression. A roomier silhouette has been adopted on shirts and jackets, while polos are tailored to the level of shirting to ensure the wearer knows he’s bought something special.”

Here is a look at the Spring/Summer 2011 ready to wear collection from Italy’s Bottega Venata. “The collection is breezy but focused, balanced between the technical rigor of athletic apparel and the refined technique of classically tailored men’s wear.  ’The collection is about performance and possibility,’ says Creative Director Tomas Maier. ‘It’s about what happens when you combine materials and techniques in new ways.  We started from tailoring, because that is what defines a silhouette.’ ”

(capsule) NY | Taylor Supply

22 July 2010, 17.55 | Posted in Fashion | 2 comments »

selectism - (capsule) ny | taylor supply

It’s cool how NY and Taylor Supply rhyme, right? Probably the reason the company chose to produce all their garments in the Big Apple…

Bad lines aside (i.e. those words above), the real reason for local production is a genuine appreciation for manufacture and a desire to get up close and personal with the process. Though much of the fabric is sourced from Japanese mills, the Taylor Supply team takes great pride in knowing their factories. This may seem par for the course these days, but the idea remains important.

For Spring 2010 they’ve worked from an early 2oth-century industrial/nautical theme. The jackets we’re showing are the Hillclimber and the Whaler. No prizes for guessing that the jacket with anchor buttons is the whaler.

Check them out after the leap.
