Tender Denim

Selectism - tender-denim-01

We’d heard about Tender for a short while now, but after finally seeing the collection up close we felt it was time to write about it. Headed by William Kroll, Tender is an English label who managed the none-too-easy task of cutting and making their denim in England – Leicester to be specific. They use 16oz Japanese selvage denim, dip dyeing  them to achieve a unique finish.

Elsewhere in the collection, they make a small range or short sleeve sweatshirts (they’re loopwheeled and made in Leicester), pullover work shirts and a couple of belts. There’s also a small collection of scarves, bandanas, pocket squares and ties made with the Hill Side. We’re showcasing the Spring/Summer 2011 range in this post, but their debut collection is available now on Superdenim.

Albam Casual Blazer

selectism - albam-casual-blazer-01

Taking their friendly customer service to the next level, Albam have now created this blazer based on notes from their customers. A more cynical person would say that all these customers must be fans of Norse Projects’ blazers, but that’s neither here or there. Similarities aside, this a great layering piece for anyone who needs a little smartening up. On a side note, it’s also nice to see that the three button blazer has now made a full comeback into popularity. (Albam)

We’ll be featuring all of the 2011 Tsovet collection very soon. For now, this new twist on a favorite offers something of a quick burst preview.

Selectism - patagonia-yvon-chouinard

Sabotage Times has a great feature on Patagonia’s founder, Yvon Chouinard. Tracing the origins of the company, the piece looks at how Patagonia grew to the company it is today. Patagonia remain a huge influence on the world of menswear, including two of our upcoming feature subjects, so this is well worth a read.

Yvon Chouinard. Heard of him? He’s one of the good guys. A 72 year old surfer and climber. A die hard environmentalist. A former blacksmith turned climbing gear manufacturer who went on to found one of the most successful outdoor clothing companies in the world. Patagonia.

tom ford eyewear campaign fall 2010 selectism 4 Tom Ford Eyewear Autumn 2010 Campaign

GQ UK reviews the Tom Ford eyewear campaign for Autumn 2010. “Imagine Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds only with a topless Danish supermodel in the Tippi Hedren role. Then you’ll get a pretty good idea of Tom Ford’s bizarre but brilliant eyewear campaign for autumn/winter 2010, shot by the designer turned director himself, which sees the bespectacled Hoult puckering up to a crow and Beha breastfeeding one. This follows on from the previous, no less eye-catching spring/summer campaign which saw the lucky A Single Man actor teamed with American supermodel Carolyn Murphy…”

“Camp Bisco, the hippie festival that like Bonnaroo has been diversifying its lineup, kicked off in Mariaville, NY last night (7/15). LCD Soundsystem (who are on their way to Pitchfork), Caribou (who play Governors Island tonight), and Holy Fuck (who you can catch at Siren on Saturday) were all part of the Thursday night lineup. “The Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce represents the Italian automaker’s unwavering dedication to speed, style, and sex appeal. Just an all around amazing automobile.” (notcot)

03. Brownbook Magazine (above)

“Dubai-based Brownbook Magazine celebrates the 22nd issue of their “urban guide to the Middle East” with a focus on North Africa—all done up in their recently-debuted redesign. The fresh look includes a new Arabic-inspired font that blends seamlessly with text (primarily in English) for a magazine with a style as worldly as the stories it features.” (coolhunting)

04. ID student Chris Holloway’s invention one-ups bicycle engineers

” ‘While every other part of the modern mountain bike has changed to meet the modern demands of downhill racing, the gear system has barely changed for more than 100 years. For the pinnacle of the sport, it is clear that a better alternative had to be found,’ said Holloway, providing background for his invention: The Link gear system, which rather than being a series of fixed-size gears is instead made of four moveable segments.” (core77)
