The Beatles! A One-Night Stand in the Heartland

selectism - The Beatles! A One-Night Stand in the Heartland

Opening today, The Beatles! A One-Night Stand in the Heartland is about as good a rock n’ roll history exhibit differs a little from the Grateful Dead display we highlighted earlier in the week. For example, it has a direct correlation with the host institution – the Minnesota Historical Society.

The story behind the show -

In August, 1965, a 17-year-old local photographer documented the Beatles’ only appearance in Minnesota. Bill Carlson’s images are the focus of this new exhibit, including photos of the band’s arrival at Wold Chamberlain Field, the mobs of girls waiting to greet them, their press conference and performance at Met Stadium. This is the first major exhibit of the images, some of which have never been published. Many of the images are taken from Carlson’s book of the same name.

The photographs will be on view through September 12, 2010. Even without having seen it, an assumption can easily be made that A One-Night Stand In the Heartland is superior to other rock photography exhibitions that have been mounted in the last year. Why? Because there is a distinct theme.

Selectism - camo-captain-cardigan-01

With their nomination for Pitti’s young designer award and ever-expanding stockist list, it’s fair to say that Camo have officially blown up *insert Westwood-esque bomb here*. A sale piece like this is so necessary right now – it’ll do well in the summer nights and will last right through to the depths of winter as a layer. (C-Store)

Take a leap, see those images.

01. The Team Who Made Old Spice Smell Good Again Reveals What’s Behind Mustafa’s Towel

“Real time is what drives the Internet. New news is what everyone wants to get a hold of. Everyone is a publisher in their own way. Everyone wants to be tweeting or blogging about something that they are first to be in on. What we’ve done here is blur the lines between things that people don’t expect to be able to be done in real time.” (fast company)

02. 18th-Century Ship Found at Trade Center Site

“By Wednesday, the outlines made it plain: a 30-foot length of a wood-hulled vessel had been discovered about 20 to 30 feet below street level on the World Trade Center site, the first such large-scale archaeological find along the Manhattan waterfront since 1982, when an 18th-century cargo ship came to light at 175 Water Street.” (nyt)

03. Etapes: Non-Format (above)

“Doing something for music is a special challenge.  When you work for advertising or for selling another product, it’s much more about conveying a specific message about the product whereas with music, even for a known band, it’s new music, and so you are just giving it a visual companion. It’s more about being expressive.” (etapes)

04. Eating The Street

“Although Mexico City has always had a tradition of street food, as well as a climate that permits year-round outdoor life, Janet Long’s statistics show that the number of vendors has more-or-less tripled in the past decade. The reasons behind that expansion reveal a fascinating blend of socio-economic, political, and infrastructural forces that shape the D.F.’s landscape of mobile dining.”

Calvin Klein Collaborates with J. Mayer H for Spring Presentation

Selectism - Calvin Klein Collaborates with J. Mayer H for Spring Presentation

In what looks to be their “biggest ever fashion event,” The USA’s own Calvin Klein presented their Berlin “show” for Spring 2011 inside a former mint. From what Wallpaper* captured, it would seem it was massive. “J. Mayer H. Architects were commissioned by Calvin Klein to create a backdrop for the brand’s biggest presentation in Europe to date… According to Jürgen Mayer H, the installation featured ‘Stonehenge-like sculptural objects, huge forms of pieces that could fit together like a three-dimensional puzzle…’”

Selectism - The Lower East Side Rockabilly Hob Nob

Rockabilly anyone?

For those living or visiting NYC this weekend, you may want to trot over to the LES for the first NYC show by Los Angeles’ Wild Records recording artists Omar & The Stringpoppers. For those into the rockabilly sound, it is sure to be a big deal. “The band have developed into the US’s number one rockabilly band playing extensively throughout California and Europe. Omar [Romero] onstage is like watching a tornado unleash. If you find this a bold statement, when you catch his live show, you will not be disappointed. Over the last two years, Omar and the Stringpoppers have played in Spain, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, UK, and they were one of the healdliners at Viva Las Vegas 2003 [and 2005]” (photo)

Check them on Sunday, July 18th at Manhattan’s Lower East Side Self Edge New York shop.

Tod’s “Schooldays” Film

GQ UK showcases an interesting little film “celebrating” the Tod’s line. “It doesn’t get more old school than Tod’s, the luxury Italian shoemaker that first made the moccasin sophisticated back in the Seventies. In this short film from GQ Creative Fashion Director Jo Levin and photographer Guzman, the brand takes a moment to celebrate their signature shoe with a little old-fashioned tomfoolery at Milton Abbey school in Dorset.” Dare not call it “Dead Poets.”

Samuel Glassmann Cufflinks

Selectism - Samuel Glassmann Cufflinks

Samuel Glassmann of Paris takes his cufflinks seriously, as made obvious by his description of the production process for some of them. As described below. More importantly, they look incredibly finished and well made. The brilliance in color force them to standout when worn.

“Firstly, the pion is milled in order to create two flat surfaces: one surface being the outer part of the shell … Using a bath of muriatic acid, the burnt edges of the pawn caused because of the milling process, are scoured away. Next, polishing: in a wooden barrel filled with water and powdered pumice stone the angular aspects of the pions are smoothed out so not to damage the shirt buttonholes when they are eventually in use… Finally, the link between the cufflinks is created with a silk thread known as ‘cordonnet’. Cordonnet was used in the 19th century for sewing buttonholes and preserving contact between the button and the silk thread.” Serious business.

selectism - Sunrise Weissbier from Victory

Are you looking for a Summer swill “as invigorating as the morning rays of the Summer sun”?

Sunrise Weissbier, Victory Brewing Company’s answer to warm weather thirst promises to answer this need. It is an unfiltered Bavarian Ale – crisp, fruity, tangy, and all those other good qualifiers for heat busting brews. The beer is available in both bottles and on select drafts through Autumn.

Also from Victory, Whilrwind Witbier is new for 2010. They’ve produced an amazing video to introduce it and suggest food pairings. Don’t miss it after the jump. (Yes, they call it a Spring beer, but you can still drink it right now… but come August it’s gone).

Selectism - Palladium by Neil Barrett Boot in Dust

Neil Barret worked over the Palladium Pampa Baggy Boot (in black) for his Milan show back in January. Recently, the black colorway showed its face again during the fashion fairs. Today, they get their official release. Along with the black colorway, the Palladium by Neil Barrett boot drops in a “dust” color that is produced in “low nap Nubuck leather with a velvet like feel.”
