Pointer Tanju Loafers

selectism - Pointer-Tanju-Loafer

Another day, another couple of sale picks. We can’t resist, we’re like, ermmm, people who can’t resist posting sale picks (there’s no point of comparison for that). These Pointer Tanju loafers are just classic enough to please the summer suit wearing folk whilst being down to earth enough for the rest of us to get into. The £69 price tag isn’t bad either. (End)

01. Norman McLaren ‘Pen Point Percussion’ (Above)

‘This film footage is from around 1940 and shows Norman McLaren painting on film negative to create a sound composition. Now whilst Norman is of course using the technology of the day, he’s not moaning about the lack of features of his toolset, he’s just using what he’s got to make something wonderful. And the biggest thing he’s got is a willingness to experiment and try new things.’ (Brendan Dawes)

02. Mel Gibson’s rant caught on tape

Not much more to say. He’s nuts. (Hollywood Gossip)

03. Raekwon Talks Possible Collaboration With Eminem

‘The Chef and Slim Shady may have something to add onto the menu shortly. Raekwon told XXLMag.com that he met Eminem at Switzerland’s Openair Festival over the weekend and they discussed the possibility of working together.’ (XXL)

04. The Greatest Of All Trios

‘Now that those 3 mogul tycoons are together in Miami, I think it’s a good time to talk about some of the other greatest trios of all-time. As you shall see, they usually end up leaning too far to the individual genius carrying two lesser pieces along, or the two great ones and a third wheel. Some are rap groups, some are iconic fictional characters, and some are breakfast cereal franchises. Without further ado…’ (Slam Online)

Carga Zero Wastage Bag

Selectism - Carga Zero Wastage Bag

There is never a shortage (these days) of bags which can convince the general man is allowed to rock a bag even if it is not a brief or courier. Carga’s latest helps this cause. “Architect Mauro Bianucci’s Carga Bags offer high design with a low impact. Believing how an item is made to be just as important as how it looks and functions, Bianucci continually explores new (sometimes unorthodox) assembly methods, in order to find the most streamlined and sustainable. With his latest range, the aptly titled ØW, or, Zero Wastage collection, Bianucci has successfully eliminated the cutting waste resultant from normal fabrication..” (cwac)

adidas Historical World Cup Soccer Ball Set of 10

Selectism - adidas Historical World Cup Soccer Ball Set of 10

Arkitip points us at one of the best footie collectors set we have seen in some time – adidas Historical World Cup Soccer Ball Set of 10 adidas Historical World Cup Soccer Ball Set of 10. Every FIFA World Cup official match ball from 1970 to 2006 (2010 is indeed missing) is presented with balls holders featuring the dates of the Cups. As well each ball is made again to their original and exact manufacturing builds. I would love this on my mantle.

We can sit here and argue our favorites but I am pretty sure the majority of readers will point to the Mexico 1986, Tango Azteca as the ball that sticks the strongest in their youth memory. It is hands down the best pattern, best looking kicker (the og ‘78 is great as well).

Amazon adidas Historical World Cup Soccer Ball Set of 10 is selling the set for just under 650$US.

Wheelmen & Co.

selectism - wheelmen & co

Jeff and I both have CT roots. We both like bicycles.

Wheelmen & Co. has CT roots. It is predicated on a love of bicycles.

They make simple and useful products like belts, hip bags, and messenger satchels. The company is a labor of love for two Southern Connecticut lads with a passion for graphic design and one great-grandfather that was the first bicycle repairman in Ireland. Another great-grandfather is subject of their finest t-shirt – an ode to Charles E. Heydt, first president of the Greenwhich Wheelmen Bike Club.

Family tradition and contemporary needs are the basic ingredients to the brand, which doesn’t reach too far or get overly fancy. A few of our favorites follow.

Hermes Orion Suitcase

Selectism - Hermes Orion Suitcase

Looking to get step up your luggage game to the next level. The new Hermes Orion Suitcase is damn friendly looking. “Created by Gabriele Pezzini, Hermes Design Director, this impressive piece has a ‘brushed anodised aluminium’ shell, interiors reinforced with carbon and cowhide handles in traditional Hermes brown.  There is a certain ergonomic simplicity to the Orion’s design, but does it look too clinical and modern? It certainly shies away from the Louis Vuitton ‘bygone era’ classic trunk.” The Hermes Orion should be available now… (nc>worthlooking)

“American Splendor” Creator Harvey Pekar Dies

Selectism - "American Splendor" Creator Harvey Pekar Dies

One of America’s greatest writers past away on Monday. I first discovered his “American Splendor” books around the same I discovered Crumb books and Speigelman’s “Maus.” As a reader, I found the style of character drawing very different from the works of the DC/Marvel/DarkHorse world (a door opener of sorts in the indie world). The stories seems told best in the drawing of the average individual and his day to day. I would highly recommend them.

From the NYT Obit: “Harvey Pekar, whose autobiographical comic book “American Splendor” attracted a cult following for its unvarnished stories of a depressed, aggrieved Everyman negotiating daily life in Cleveland and became the basis for a critically acclaimed 2003 film, died on Monday at his home in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. He was 70.” (photo)

Video | Skin Deep: Horiyoshi III

13 July 2010, 18.12 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

Nowness today presents a new film about Japanese tattoo master Horiyoshi III.

Johnny Shand Kydd (who you may remember from last week’s post) captured the master at work, getting at the core of his process.

Some words about Horiyoshi III -

Born Yoshihito Nakano in 1946, Horiyoshi III had his epiphany when confronted with a Yakuza (Japanese gangster) sporting a full body tattoo—or “suit”—at a public bathhouse as a young boy. Inspired, he visited the studio of his later master, Horiyoshi I, for his own tattoo, and subsequently became his apprentice at the age of 25. Now based in the suburbs of port-city Yokohama, Horiyoshi works from a secluded, quiet atelier, crammed with skulls, Japanese Noh theater masks and even a dragon-print umbrella from Vivienne Westwood. His status as the most respected tattoo artist in Japan is confirmed by his adoption of his master’s honorific title, which he aims to pass down to his son, Kazuyoshi Nakano.

The video also offers a preview of the recently released Horiyoshi III clothing line, which transfers some of the splended designs he inks on skin to garments. I wrote a brief ramble about the clothing several weeks ago. Seems fitting to link it, so here goes – Horiyoshi III.
