Selectism - Percival Autumn/Winter 2010

London’s Percival line offers a strong outwear collection as well as tops that are meant to be “stand alone” additions to your wardrobe. “Harris tweed, beeswax cotton from Scotland, chunky lambswool, heavyweight melton from Yorkshire, and fine Portuguese  cotton melange” are some of the textiles used in the collection.

Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New-York Historical Society

selectism - GRATEFUL DEAD: NOW PLAYING AT THE NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY

In complete contrast to the Brooklyn Dodgers exhibition posted earlier today, Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New-York Historical Society, has very little to do with institutional mission or innovative programming. However, despite my up turned nose, the show is full of superb objects and worth noting on that ground.

About the exhibition -

Tracing the career and achievements of a band that became one of the most significant cultural forces in 20th century America, the New-York Historical Society presents The Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New-York Historical Society. The exhibition, on view from March 5 to September 5, 2010, represents the first large-scale exhibition of materials from the Grateful Dead Archive, housed at the University of California Santa Cruz.

Running to September 5, 2010 at the New York Historical Society.

Selectism - Paul Smith Courier Bags for Rapha

Rapha gets even closer with the Paul Smith house with a new array of bags including this “courier bag” featuring a Rapha Condor team print. Here’s some thoughts on the Courier Bag shown above. “A luxury piece for stylish city riding, the courier bag features the eye-catching ‘Mini with cyclists’ print. An image shot exclusively for Paul Smith, it shows the Rapha Condor Sharp team cycling alongside the Paul Smith multi-stripe Mini on the Nottingham Embankment.” Check out the rest of the Paul Smith bags in our gallery.

BBB | Grenson Spring/Summer 2011

Selectism - grenson-spring-2011-01

Here’s a first look at some of what Grenson have planned for Spring/Summer 2011. They’d previously shown in Paris, but this was the first showing of their mainline collection. The picture above showcases some of the more subdued colourways (the loafers are right up the American prep set’s alley), elsewhere it’s a bold collection -  definitely not for the man afraid of a little summer colour.

Home Base: Memories of the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field

12 July 2010, 15.40 | Posted in Art | No comments »

selectism - Home Base: Memories of the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field

Home Base: Memories of the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field stems from an innovative program at Brooklyn Historical Society, Exhibition Laboratory. Essentially, Ex Lab functions as an after-school museum studies course for motivated New York high-schoolers. Their work for the Brooklyn Historical Society, now on view, relays the highs and lows of the Dodger era in Brooklyn.

The students work through objects – photographs, uniforms, etc. – and oral histories to form a compelling story of a pivotal time in American baseball history.

Worth heading to Brooklyn to check out.

Yes, that title is correct. Sandqvist show their collections a season behind everyone else, so they were showing off their AW10 collection at this SS11 show. Got that? good. There’s a bag for every occasion in this collection, with totes, backpacks and weekend bags all making an appearance.

Brooks Brothers for Gilt Man

Selectism - Brooks Brothers for Gilt Man

While we’re not in the business of listing “sales” in our posts, we do note that Gilt Man has worked what looks like a “new” collection with Brooks Brothers for their sale community. The GQ Eye tells us: “In the latest sign of its quest for world online-retail domination, Gilt Groupe is launching an exclusive sale today at 12:00 noon ET featuring a brand-new Brooks Brothers collection. The line—a younger, slimmer spin on BB staples like cotton chinos, prep-schoolish cardigans (like the one pictured above), and repp ties—will be available exclusively through Gilt until August…”

Selectism - Neil-Barrett-x-Sundek-Collection-02

Sundek have teamed up with Neil Barrett for a capsule collection for SS11. From what we saw, the collection will mainly be shorts and shirting – although the main focus will be on the shorts (as that’s Sundek’s speciality and all). Patterns include camo, which has become the new pattern of choice incredibly quickly. (HS)
