Selectism - The Brothers Bray for Sebago Boot and Shoe

A while a go, we profiled a Billykirk for Sebago dockworker shoe. Today, the line grows a bit and moves to The Brother’s Bray Collection by Billykirk. Two new models will be sold through Urban Outfitters starting this week. The dockworker returns in a suede leather alongside a well done moc inspired boot.

“Two Leg Table” by Shay Carmon and Ben Klinger

curated mag - "Two Leg Table" by Shay Carmon and Ben Klinger

Isreali designers Shay Carmon and Ben Klinger have completed a new series of furniture including the rather special Two Leg Table. It’s an elegant set up, with each leg extending across the width of the table for adequate weight dispersal. I especially like how the legs tenon extends up through the table top. (via DB).

Post Overalls Brick Leaf Mattalini Jacket

Selectism - post-overalls-brick-leaf-jacket-01

This is strictly for the pattern lovers. We don’t blame anyone for not loving this piece, but we feel it’s a nice wardrobe addition – as opposed to a staple. You should have all your everyday pieces by now anyway. Now it’s time to add some colour. Especially when that colour is on sale and available in a few sizes. [Bureau]

André Ethier – “Actualized, and it Feels so Good”

27 July 2010, 15.30 | Posted in Art | No comments »

selectism - AEthier-front

Curated has news of a new exhibition that looks, to our rather uneducated eyes, pretty good. Pretty, pretty good.

Actualized, and it feels so good is Canadian painter Andre Ethier’s second solo exhibition at Honor Fraser. The artist explores narrative with a haunting hybrid of styles – there are elements of portraiture, still life, folk, and sci-fi in the muddle – attempting to dig into his own subconscious. For the new body of work, on view through September 4, 2010, Ethier believes he’s tapped his own adolescent thoughts. If so, the ideas and themes are as varied as his stylistic influences, and taken all together it makes for fascinating viewing.

Mismo Spring/Summer 2011

Selectism - mismo-spring-2011-01

By internet terms, this is old news now, but Mismo are an SL fave – we receive daily compliments on their shopper bag – so we had to post this up. As we noted in our Capsule round-up they’ve added a boatload of new shapes, including backpacks, ‘mega’ totes, iphone cases and supply cases. As you’d expect from Mismo, they’re all highly desirable – some might say handsome – and they can take a bit of a beating (as we can personally attest).

Take a leap to see the rest of the collection.

“Manly Pursuits: The Sporting Images of Thomas Eakins” Exhibition at LACMA

27 July 2010, 13.13 | Posted in Art | No comments »

selectism - "Manly Pursuits: The Sporting Images of Thomas Eakins" Exhibition at LACMA

Now on view at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Manly Pursuits: The Sporting Images of Thomas Eakins.

Manly Pursuits: The Sporting Images of Thomas Eakins celebrates LACMA’s 2007 acquisition of Eakins’s great sporting painting, Wrestlers, 1899. The exhibition will examine the work in a broad thematic context, providing a rare opportunity to consider the history of sporting images in the oeuvre of this icon of American nineteenth-century art. While his rowing paintings and swimming images were each the focus of special exhibitions, no show has ever been devoted to the varied array of sporting images Eakins depicted. Moreover, while Eakins exhibitions have been increasingly frequent on the East Coast, they have been rare at West Coast venues. Manly Pursuits will trace Los Angeles’s long but little known association with Eakins’s art. The exhibition is curated by Ilene Susan Fort, The Gail & John Liebes Curator of American Art at LACMA.

Manly Pursuits is on view through October 17, 2010.

Monocle Mediterraneo

Selectism - monocle-mediterraneo-01.jpg

Magculture turn us onto Monocle Mediterraneo. News of Monocle’s newspaper has been doing the rounds for a while now and it’s finally completed. Their main reasoning for this was to provide a textual stopgap (wanky terms, but true) between their bumper summer issue and their next issue. In a short chat with Magculture, Tyler Brule stated how he felt the newspaper was the right method for a monocle summer one-off issue.

‘We wanted to do a little more this year and fill the text/image gap. We considered adding an eleventh issue (they take a winter break with a combined Dec/Jan issue too) but also considered how our readers live over the summer’

01. Artist and Surfer as Best Buddies (Above)

“The exuberant three-gallery exhibition “Swell” is one of the Big Kahunas of the season’s group shows. Its requisite summertime theme is surfing, which runs wider and deeper than most, encompassing an array of visual material and several familiar characters, namely the American male as renegade and good buddy.” (NYT).

02. Street Value : Shopping, Planning, and Politics at Fulton Mall

“Street Value: Shopping, Planning, and Politics at Fulton Mall offers an in-depth look at one of Downtown Brooklyn’s longest redevelopment sagas. Once referred to as the “Fifth Avenue of Brooklyn,” Fulton Street was established in the 1880s following the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge and a nearby elevated rail line. This bustling shopping district, running from Flatbush Avenue to Borough Hall, has remained one of the most profitable and well-used thoroughfares in the city. Today Fulton Street’s hand-painted signage, custom jewelry and sneaker stores, and many transient vendors offer a rare sampling of independent commerce. Nevertheless, misunderstandings about race, class, and real estate have caused the street to be characterized as “blighted,” turning it into a testing ground for urban improvement schemes from the 1920s onward. Recently rezoned, Fulton Street is once again poised for big changes.” (PA Press).

03. Exhibitions NYC. Japan Fashion Now. The Museum at FIT.

“The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (MFIT) presents Japan Fashion Now, the first exhibition to explore contemporary Japanese fashion in all its radical creativity, from designer fashion to street style, including menswear.” (The Curated Object).

04. Early American Passover Haggadah Takes $86,100 At Kestenbaum Auction

“Kestenbaum & Company’s saleroom was filled-to-capacity as clients witnessed a singularly important item of Americana go under the hammer at the firm’s auction of fine Judaica on May 27. Consigned by Gratz College of Philadelphia, the first Passover Haggadah printed in America, New York, 1837, was part of the college’s library for almost a century. After spirited bidding, the text ultimately realized $86,100 against a presale estimate of $40/60,000.” (The Bee).
