Brian Eno “Small Craft On A Milk Sea” Box Set

Selectism - Brian Eno "Small Craft On A Milk Sea" Box Set

When word arrived that Brian Eno would be releasing his latest works, “Small Craft On A Milk Sea” on the UK WARP label, smiles were seen throughout the music community. Eno’s placement on WARP was perhaps one of the more interesting moves in music of late – not only for integrity’s sake but for the benefit of listeners worldwide.

As usual, the proper collector’s box sets, complementing the CD release, are available for pre-order. We’ll stick with the most interesting of the two boxes (at least in this writer’s opinion): the “Limited Edition Box Set.” The
“limited edition” box comes not only with the typical CD and 180g heavyweight vinyl pressings of the album, but also with the nerd level extra of  24-bit WAV files (available for download on release date, November 3, 2010)

Fans of Eno’s art will appreciate the “High quality 12″ square lithographic print of new Brian Eno artwork, printed on 352gsm Mohawk Superfine stock, presented in full-colour, case-bound 12″ cover. Lined in crimson stock with tissue paper protection.”

The full package is around $100 and guaranteed to become an investment into both music and art.

selectism - "Wet Women" Exhibition at Number 6

This Thursday, London’s Number Six hosts a one-night-only exhibition of Amanda Langford’s Wet Women. The images first saw light 22 years ago, in a similar set up at the Poisson Rouge restaurant in St. Martin French West Indies. You’ll notice a late ’80s flare (check out the bathing beauties glasses), as well as Langford’s exceptional eye for color contrast.

It all kicks off at 6:30pm GMT.

For those unable to attend, we’ve pulled eight of Langford’s fine photographs for your viewing pleasure. Click the link to check them all out.

Selectism - one-hotel-room-01

Hostem, the east end store which stocks everything from Visvim to Julius, are hosting an installation in collaboration with design duo Jamesplumb. Called the ‘one room hotel’, the installation is, errr, a one room hotel designed by the two for the London Design festival. Working as an installation by day and genuine hotel space by night, prospective guests will have to win a night at the space by convincing folks that they deserve it. The project launches at the same time as the design festival, on the 18th of September. You can apply for a stay at the hotel at the One Room Hotel minisite.

Uniform Wares Watch

Selectism - uniform-wares-wrist-watch-01

As we’re not all watch aficionados here at SL (well, this writer isn’t anyway) so we just wear things for the shallow reason that they look good. And this Uniform Wares watch fits that bill. You won’t be able to bore anyone with stories of its authenticity and heritage, but you will have a nice, inexpensive finishing touch to your outfit. And that’s what we all want really. Quesorvel Aran Knit Cardigan

Selectism - quesorvel-aran-knit-cardigan-01

Yep, we’re already looking at chunky knitwear. It’s never too soon – at least, not in our books – to look at layering options. A well made cardi should be in everyone’s arsenal, especially one that can double as a light jacket in the right conditions (read: when it’s not raining). The only problem with this is that you’ll have to get your proxy on to get hold of this (you can get it on at sites like Sutocorp). (Museum Arks)

01 . Swimming pools in film and culture: top 30

“Swimming pools aren’t only to lie beside or dive into. They are potent symbols – both enticing and frightening – suggesting all kinds of hidden depths.” (Telegraph).

02. Inside the Knockoff-Tennis-Shoe Factory

“A shopkeeper in Italy placed an order with a Chinese sneaker factory in Putian for 3,000 pairs of white Nike Tiempo indoor soccer shoes. It was early February, and the shopkeeper wanted the Tiempos pronto. Neither he nor Lin, the factory manager, were authorized to make Nikes. They would have no blueprints or instructions to follow. But Lin didn’t mind. He was used to working from scratch. A week later, Lin, who asked that I only use his first name, received a pair of authentic Tiempos, took them apart, studied their stitching and molding, drew up his own design and oversaw the production of 3,000 Nike clones. A month later, he shipped the shoes to Italy. “He’ll order more when there’s none left,” Lin told me recently, with confidence.” (NYT).

03. A Southern Impression: The Printmakers of Alabama

“In the twentieth century, printmakers contributed significantly to artistic expression in Alabama… Their printed impressions of the region, created using both traditional and modern techniques, depict the full panoply of Southern life. From the agrarian Southern scene, to nascent industrialization at the turn of the century and the subsequent poverty and despair of the Great Depression, to the rise of technology in the New Southprintmakers created a visual history of Alabama. In addition, many of them set their sights beyond the state. They captured a potpourri of subjects as they studied in art academies outside the region, and later enjoyed professional careers in the urban centers of America as well as abroad. A number of these printmakers were women, who struggled against significant odds to succeed as practicing artists.” (MMFA).

04. A Neighborhood Revival Starts With a New Public Library (Above)

“As budget cuts chop library programs out of schools, public libraries are becoming increasingly important in their roles to educate entire communities. But they also serve another purpose as town squares for neighborhoods–places where people can come together and share ideas. The new Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Library, which opened this month in Washington DC hopes to become the center of the neighborhood by adding uses that reach beyond reading, and creating a dynamic space that transcends the typical tomb-like library setting.” (Fast Company).

Superba Espresso Coffee

Selectism - Superba Espresso Coffee

For those that know me, I do not travel too far away from my Saeco Magic Plus. I drink and serve more cups of espresso than the average American. My Saeco is onto its 3200th cup as of last month. While in Berlin I was away from the machine but luckily, our office is around the block from one of the better coffee bars in Mitte.

When I returned home, two bags of California’s Superba espresso coffee beans were waiting for me to taste. Superba is a short run coffee roaster. Each small batch is signed and numbered by the roaster to ensure quality control. The beauty is that their roasting works. Their espresso beans were full bodied and did not throw me off my game. Try them out. Their packaging is great for gift giving as well.

Video | “Two Broad Arrows” (Full Film)

Rapha and RSA Films present three short films inspired by the people, places and stories of road racing. Johan Museeuw, Sean Kelly and Dario Pegoretti are celebrated in three cinematic portraits exploring the passion, history and drama of the sport.

Based on a trio of story-labels originally found inside the Rapha Club Jerseys, each film brings a new translation: The intense dreamscape of Nick Livesey’s ode to Johan Museeuw, Adrian Moat’s tale of discovery inspired by Sean Kelly and Ben Ingham’s intimate view of Dario Pegoretti in his workshop, all powerful representations of three distinct icons of road racing.”

“A Curious Collection from the Hand Drawn Map Association” Book

Selectism - Selectism - "A Curious Collection from the Hand Drawn Map Association" Book

The Hand Drawn Map Association delivers this fascinating book which looks the tossed aside world of personal map making – From Here to There: A Curious Collection from the Hand Drawn Map Association A Curious Collection from the Hand Drawn Map Association Book.

Here’s Amazon’s take on “It’s a situation we are all acquainted with: planning to visit friends in an unfamiliar part of the city, you draw yourself a rudimentary map with detailed directions. In March 2008, graphic designer Kris Harzinski founded the Hand Drawn Map Association in order to collect just such drawings of the everyday. Fascinated by these accidental records of a moment in time, he soon amassed a wide variety of maps, ranging from simple directions to fictional maps, to maps of unusual places, including examples drawn by well-known historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Ernest Shackleton, and Alexander Calder… From Here to There A Curious Collection from the Hand Drawn Map Association Book celebrates these ephemeral documents usually forgotten or tossed aside after having served their purpose giving them their due as artifacts representing stories from people’s lives around the world.”

Available for pre-order from Amazon A Curious Collection from the Hand Drawn Map Association Book.
