Vegas | Seavees 09/65 Bayside Moccasin for Spring 2011

More from Vegas. Seavees previewed this excellent moccasin with jute sole coming for Spring 2011. The “09/65″ is a date signifying  a SF Examiner article from September 1965 that observed the birth of the hippie movement. Choose from a selection of great colors.

Guest Blogger | On And Beyond

Selectism - on-beyond-dana-lee-duffle-01

There’s been a few bumps along the way, but here’s the second installment of our guest blogger series. Picking guest bloggers isn’t easy, but choosing On And Beyond was as big a no-brainer as no-brainers get. Of course when we first chose him, he was still relatively under the radar; since then he’s been shouted out by GQ and started working with Nike. We’re just glad he replied to our emails.

Given On and Beyond’s photography, we thought it made sense to get him to showcase a stand out piece from one of our favourite designers, Dana Lee. We picked the shearling lined leather duffle coat from her autumn/winter 2010 collection, because it deserved a closer look. The rest is up to Vincent.

Take a leap to see the rest of the shoot.

Periscope Camera by Yaniv Berg

selectism - Periscope Camera by Yaniv Berg

Dezeen shares Yaniv Berg’s Periscope Camera. “Here’s another conceptual project from Shenkar College of Engineering and Design student Yaniv Berg, this time a digital SLR camera where the lens and body are merged to form a kinked cylinder. The controls would be along the side of the Periscope Camera with the display at one end and lens at the other. Berg was inspired by a traditional reflex camera, which is held close to the photographer’s stomach and looked down into while shooting.”

selectism - our-legacy-harvest-blazer-01

Having just arrived from Stockholm yesterday, this writer has observed just how well Swedes pull off the prep look (although their great genes helped). This Our Legacy blazer is tailor made for fans of that look, rocking the lines between smart and casual – in a good way. (Our Legacy)

Ruby Mountain Brewing Company Wild West Hefeweizen

selectism - Ruby Mountain Brewing Company Wild West Hefeweizen

Need a break from the desert heat?

Knowing that many of our peers are in Sin City, we figured what better time to highlight a craft brewery from Nevada. Ruby Mountain has been knocking out beers since 1994, but the story differs a bit from the normal craft tale. Owners Steve and Maggie Safford operate Ruby Mountain from their working ranch, the brewery established as a way to diversify the ranch economy. The beer complements bales of hay and Black Angus cattle.

The Wild West Hefeweizen has thrice been awarded a Gold Medal of Distinction from the National Brewers Association. It boasts all the signature flavor of a proper Bavarian Hefeweizen, fruity and spicy notes both.

Quesorvel Down Vest

Selectism - quorsorvel-check-down-vest-01

Despite our hatred of the phrase ‘pull off’, down vests are one piece that it takes a bit of time to get your head around. Of course, it helps if the down vest is a handsome piece – which, thankfully, this Quesorvel one is. We have been tiring of the check onslaught afflicting menswear but we’d be happy to wear this around town (preferably with a check shirt, check on check is the way to go these days). Get your proxy on at Museum Arks.

APC Elbow Patch Crewneck Jumper

Selectism - apc-maroon-crewneck-jumper-01

We’ve always got room for elbow patches in our wardrobe, so this APC crewneck is a no-brainer. The maroon colour is great for folks who can’t wait for autumn to arrive (i.e. us)  and the leather elbow patches are great for folks who like the off-duty geography teacher look. Or people so bored at work they spend forever propping themselves up with their hands. (End)

01. Turning a Print Magazine into a Friendly iPad Version, Looking at Dazed & Confused

“Now that the iPad has been out for a couple months I’m starting to see different types of clusters of functions happening for publishing. There’s the standard web version through a browser, stand alone mags like Wired that have to be designed twice to fit portrait and landscape formats, pdfs, feeds like Flipboard and now a light weight flipbook like device that is essentially the print magazine in digital format.” (Design Noted)

02. Cleveland still on LeBron James’ mind

“LeBron James  won’t rule out returning to play for Cleveland some day, but admitted in an interview with GQ Magazine that owner Dan Gilbert’s letter to fans on the night James left the Cavaliers gives him “a lot of motivation” for when he and his new Miami Heat teammates play his former club.” (ESPN)

03. Help me make sense of the Drake love

“I think Drake’s tape is 100% ratass. I also willingly cede others the right to like whatever drivel they please, from reality television to malt liquor.” (Bomani Jones)

04. Django Reinhardt | The Gypsy Godfather of Hot Jazz Guitar
(Pictured)

“If you’re a guitarist, or just an avid fan of music history, you may be aware of two mythical icons who are the equivalent to the Holy Grail of guitar.  In the world of Blues, Robert Johnson imediately comes to mind– legend has it, Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his Blues guitar chops.  And in the world of Jazz guitar, there is no one more revered and influential as the one and only Hot Jazz hero, Django Reinhardt.” (Selvedge Yard)
