Selectism - sns-herning-autumn-2010-01

SNS Herning are a consistent favourite here at SL, so it’s only right that we focus on our favourite pieces from their AW10 collection. Some of these pieces have ‘dropped’ already (we still don’t feel right saying dropped) and some are still to come, but the general feel is that it’s the same ol’ SNS goodness we’ve always liked. Take a leap to see the rest of our picks.

Stewart River Boatworks

selectism - Stewart River Boatworks

We haven’t featured a canoe since last November. Let us remedy that now.

Handbuilt by Alex Comb, a man who fell in love with boating at age 11, Stewart River Boatworks, quite frankly, produces gorgeous traditional watercraft. The company responds to a wide range of boating desires – offering several types of canoe, kayak and row boat. Comb works from traditional designs, modifying each boat slightly for customer preference.

Stewart River Boatworks will be on hand on September 11, 2010, as J.W. Hume and Pierrepont Hicks combine to host “NorthernGRADE Men’s Market” in Minneapolis. Canoes will line up nicely with some of our favorite bicycles – those by Freeman Transport – and there will be shoes, socks, etc. as well.

For more on Stewart River Boatworks, visit Stewart River. A selection of fine boats comes after the leap.

Dunhill Quilted Jacket

Selectism - dunhill-quilted-jacket-01

Despite all this global village talk, trends still take at least a year to cross the pond. Quilted jackets are a prime example of this. While you can’t get away with wearing Barbour’s in the UK anymore (at least not in a certain hipsterish end of East London) a piece like this would still pass the style test. Just don’t tell any Rough Trade dwellers about this – we don’t need this going the way of the boat shoe. (Opening Ceremony)

B Store Brisbane Hooded Jacket

Selectism - b-store-brisbane-jacket-01

We know the urbane thing to do when it’s raining is to carry an umbrella, but we’re gonna be honest – we’re too lazy for all that. So we’re left with two options; either get a small packable umbrella or get a jacket with a hood. If you haven’t guessed already, we’re going with the second option. Aside from being a nice piece, it’s also a great way to go check-on-check-on-check with a jacket/overshirt/shirt combo. (B Store)

Take a leap, see those shots.

01. Dowling Duncan US bank Note Designs

“With their vertical format bills, Dowling Duncan have reignited interest in ‘the Dollar Redesign Project.’” (Design Boom).

02. Poundbury: Architectural shame with a worthy aim (above)

“On holiday in Dorset last month, I happened to drive past Poundbury in Dorset, UK. Poundbury is Prince Charles’s attempt to create his architectural and planning masterpiece next to Dorchester. I used the excuse of being up with my new baby at 7am to go and take some photos of it to show you here.” (ArchDaily).

03. Knicks sign Patrick Ewing Jr.

Patrick Ewing Jr. is back with the team where his father became famous. The team says the former Georgetown star signed with the New York Knicks as a free agent Friday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Ewing was the 43rd pick of the 2008 draft by Sacramento, but wound up with the Knicks through a series of moves. He spent the 2008-09 season in the NBA Development League but missed all of last season because of injuries. (ESPN).

[old news, but good news].

04. Cracklins: Tidbits of Southern Culture

“Contributor Barry Mazor recounts the music of OA–favorite Bobby Charles (R.I.P.) today at The Wall Street Journal. Mazor remarks of “the apparent straightforwardness” of Charles’s songwriting, “which had that deep southern Louisiana beat even when addressing social issues or darker personal themes.” We couldn’t agree more—Charles’s charmingly simple song structures often belied the gritty content.” (Oxford American).

Selectism - A History of Interior Design Book

While not the newest book on the market, John Pile of the Pratt Institute updated his A History of Interior Design A History of Interior Design Book book for a third edition in 2009. By the looks of it, the book is a fascinating look into a very old discipline of design. From Amazon: “A History of Interior Design A History of Interior Design Book tells the story of 6,000 years of domestic and public space…John Pile acknowledges that interior design is a field with unclear boundaries, in which construction, architecture, furniture, decoration, technology, and product design all overlap. These topics are woven together in a fascinating narrative that runs from cave dwellings and temple architecture, through Gothic cathedrals and renaissance palaces, to the grand civic spaces of the nineteenth  century and the sleek interiors of modern skyscrapers.”
