Upcoming at the Barbican Art Gallery, Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion will be the first ever European survey of avant-garde Japanese garments. Drawing from the 1980s to the present (and pulling names like Junya Watanabe and Yohji Yamamoto), the exhibition explores the unique sensibilities and notions of beauty embedded in Japanese design.

Curated by Akiko Fukai, renowned historian of Japanese fashion and Director of the Kyoto Costume Institute.

Future Beauty opens on October 15, 2010, and runs to February 6, 2011.

Nigel Cabourn Roll Neck Jumper

Selectism - nigel-cabourn-roll-neck-jumper-01

We’re feeling a roll neck this winter  – don’t ask us why, it just looks like an attractive proposition. Like the cardigan previously, it’s a piece that’s due a style renaissance – it’s got that whole beatnik vibe that’ll look great in the depths of winter. Add to the fact that this is one of Cabourn’s more affordable creations (£160) makes this as close to a ‘must have’ as you can get. (Coggles)

Ally Capellino ‘Alisdair’ Rucksack

Selectism - ally-capellino-alisdair-rucksack-01

We’ve always believed that some pieces need tweed – and not just for rhyming purposes. This Ally Capellino bag is the perfect example of that, making the bag just that bit different from the tsunami of bags doing the rounds these days. They’ve also added some functional elements – a rare joy in this age of the authentic reproduction – that make the bag easier to use than that vintage rucksack you bought on ebay. This isn’t in stock until August 16th, so you’ll have to put your trigger finger on hold. (Ally Capellino)

Wood Wood Wilkinson Jacket

Recommending autumn/winter pieces in the middle of summer will always be odd to us, but at least this piece could conceivably be worn now.  We feel like we’re always talking weather here – it’s the British in (some) of us – but as the weather cools down, a piece like this would do well in the evenings. All that aside, it’s also just a good looking piece. (Wood Wood)

Selectism - J.W. Anderson Circle Rings

J.W. Anderson drops a set of “circle” rings for the men looking to bring some statements to their knuckles (fingers, really). A variety of words are available but they all revolve around an emotion of a state of thought. While “love” and “hate” are common, “saints” are not. Choose whichever you feel describes you best. Oki-ni has them.

Selectism - CREED Aventus Fragrance

CREED delivers a new fragrance to the market. “Royal but not imposing, CREED Aventus is made with ingredients hand selected worldwide by Erwin CREED, seventh generation of CREED and its future chief. Essences he chose were shipped to CREED’s French workshop, where father and son created Aventus using hand production methods that date to the founding of CREED in 1760. The result: a work of excellence fit for the most discerning clientele.”  NYT called it, “This mesmerizing mix of bergamot, apple and pineapple perched on wood and oakmoss is evanescent and summery, so chill it, and deploy it quickly.”

“The U.S. Open of Surfing is a week-long surfing competition held annually during the summer in Huntington Beach, California.” (usopenofsurf)

02. Grass Fed | Korean in Massachusetts

“The Pioneer Valley, home to a whole mess of Western Massachusetts’s finest higher-education operations, is not a bad place to eat per se. But I know from friends who live or have lived there that the options can feel limited. So I was stoked, when passing through last week, to be taken to a restaurant that I hadn’t heard of and actually liked: Gohyang Korean Restaurant, a shoebox of a place on Route 9. There’s no reason why there shouldn’t, couldn’t or wouldn’t be a good Korean restaurant there, but I was quietly thrilled about it.” (tmag)

03. The Creators Project Romain Gavras

“Romain Gavras is the guy who made that disturbing music video for Justice that got under people’s skins. Most recently, and controversially, he made a video for M.I.A featuring ginger genocide. He founded, with Kim Chapiron, the lo-fi French film and art collective Kourtrajmé Productions, which has close to 140 members. We met up with him to talk film, music and creativity.” (cp)

04. America in Color from 1939-1943 (above)

“These images, by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information, are some of the only color photographs taken of the effects of the Depression on America’s rural and small town populations.” (coudal>denverpost)
