Upcoming at the Barbican Art Gallery, Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion will be the first ever European survey of avant-garde Japanese garments. Drawing from the 1980s to the present (and pulling names like Junya Watanabe and Yohji Yamamoto), the exhibition explores the unique sensibilities and notions of beauty embedded in Japanese design.

Curated by Akiko Fukai, renowned historian of Japanese fashion and Director of the Kyoto Costume Institute.

Future Beauty opens on October 15, 2010, and runs to February 6, 2011.

We’re feeling a roll neck this winter  – don’t ask us why, it just looks like an attractive proposition. Like the cardigan previously, it’s a piece that’s due a style renaissance – it’s got that whole beatnik vibe that’ll look great in the depths of winter. Add to the fact that this is one of Cabourn’s more affordable creations (£160) makes this as close to a ‘must have’ as you can get. (Coggles)

We’ve always believed that some pieces need tweed – and not just for rhyming purposes. This Ally Capellino bag is the perfect example of that, making the bag just that bit different from the tsunami of bags doing the rounds these days. They’ve also added some functional elements – a rare joy in this age of the authentic reproduction – that make the bag easier to use than that vintage rucksack you bought on ebay. Recommending autumn/winter pieces in the middle of summer will always be odd to us, but at least this piece could conceivably be worn now.  We feel like we’re always talking weather here – it’s the British in (some) of us – but as the weather cools down, a piece like this would do well in the evenings. J.W. Anderson drops a set of “circle” rings for the men looking to bring some statements to their knuckles (fingers, really). A variety of words are available but they all revolve around an emotion of a state of thought. While “love” and “hate” are common, “saints” are not. Choose whichever you feel describes you best.
