Curated shares thoughts on the House V by Jakob Bader Architecture -

Can’t help but fall for the glorious conception of space in Jakob Bader Architecture’s recent House V. Located in Munich, Germany, the house responds to both a small plot and to strict local council regulations. The cantilever roof extending the upper floor and acting as protection for the automobile hard standing is particularly excellent.

Maison Martin Margiela Interview

From the signs of it, Interview’s latest issue is quite the doozy. APC interview aside, they’ve also snared an interview with the team behind Maison Martin Margiela. Judging from this interview between the Joseph Kosuth Studio and Maison Martin Margiela, it looks like the man behind the label isn’t giving up his anonymity anytime yet. Like most Interview interviews, this is more of a chat than a formal feature, with both parties talking as much as each other – in a good way. One especially interesting answer is when the Maison are asked about Margiela’s anonymity and how it affects the label.

“We try to have people accept the fact that the work of the Maison Martin Margiela can exist independently of what the designer looks like-that our work is solely a proposition of wearing what it is we like to create, a presentation of a way in which we see things at a given moment. Martin Margiela decided not to appear in the public eye for that reason. He wants the light not to be on him but on what really matters-the clothes, the philosophy, the Maison, the team. And now it’s become the landmark of the Maison. But what some consider a marketing strategy and a sort of snobbism is more like a sacrifice: He could have all eyes on him, and the glory and the fame. But instead he decided to step away, to let the garments and the Maison speak for him, for his love of what he does, and for the respect he has for his team.”

B Store Satchel

With everyone and their cousin making a backpack these days, it’s nice to see some alternatives out there for the folks who (deity forbid) don’t like backpacks. While satchels, like backpacks, give off a school-ish vibe, the satchel is decidedly more public school English than the backpack. And all that aside, it’s also just a  great piece. (ASOS)

Calabrese Medium Lipari Overnight Bag

Selectism - calabrese-overnight-bag-01

We’ve got that Friday feeling today, which means (for some inexplicable reason) we’re feeling like showing off a few bags today. We’re gonna start proceedings with this Calabrese overnight bag. The leather on this bag is, as they say on the streets, buttery and the size s perfect for a two nighter (or an extremely well packed overnight stay). [Oi Polloi]

Take a leap to see more shots.

Our man Beau selects the links on Thursday.

01. Miniature Graffiti (above)

“The stop-motion short offers a dollhouse-size representation of a typical hour on the Tumblingerstraße, a legally graffiti-friendly street in Munich.” (nymag)

02. London’s Ping Pong Revolution

“The current epicenter of this “ping pong revolution” seems to be London, where England’s national table tennis association has installed 100 public tables around the city for a month-long summer pong blitz. The tables are available for free pick-up games, as well as scheduled classes with ping-pong aces.” (good)

03. Manufacturing The Coffee Culture

“For the coffee industry to survive, it needed a new marketing strategy. Kenneth Roman, Jr., the president of Ogilvy and Mather, one of the PR firms that supported Maxwell House, made a suggestion: emphasize quality, value, and image by creating segmented products to increase appeal .” (anthropology in practice)

04. Arcade Fire on Recording ‘The Suburbs’

“Butler also revealed that after the album’s 16 songs were recorded and mixed, “We actually cut each song to a 12-inch [vinyl disk], then used that for the final digital master. For every song on the record, there is a 12-inch disk that we played back into the computer. It’s like a photograph of the vinyl.”" (rolling stone)

Selectism - Core77 Flagship Opens in Portland, OR

A huge congrats to Core77 on the opening of their flasghip shop in Portland, OR. The ID based web site turns terrestrial and we could not be happier. “We are excited to be located in Portland and to be able to take part in the historic – and accelerating – culture of craftsmanship and creative labor which lives here. The store is for both ‘creative types’ and those who love them (and really, now-a-days, who doesn’t?) – it is built to appeal with a selection of the basic tools of creative work – pencils, paper, pens – a line-up of high-quality tools and fabrication implements – foam cutters! wrenches! – and a wide variety of task-specific clothing made for the shop or studio”

Selectism - OAK French Army Jacket

Army green gets me everytime, especially on true vintage pieces where the army green has faded into into a light creamy green. Takes years to get there. For not, a nice take on the French military jacket. “Army green cotton twill jacket with two side pockets and double front zip pockets. button closure with velcro strip at bottom. elasticated waist and small collar…” Available at OAK.

Hammarhead Industries VMX Gloves

selectism - Hammarhead Industries VMX Gloves

Philadelphia’s Hammarhead Industries has announced a handsome trio of domestic deerskin (Hammarhead’s first collaborative project). Produced in the USA by James Churchill Glove Company, the VMX Glove has a one piece palm and contrasting trim.

Hammarhead founder James Laughead shares, “Mike Churchill of the James Churchill Glove Company and I have been working on the Hammarhead VMX glove project for six months.  Mike has been an outstanding collaborator and extremely patient with me during the process.  Thanks to his insight and support we now have our final product.  Mike’s father turned up the old leather dies that cut these gloves in the 60’s and 70’s.  The leather trim is a nod to the original rolled leather padding that was subsequently replaced with rubber in the 1970’s.  The gloves are really fun to wear and I have claimed the  penultimate prototype as my daily riders (black/natural).”

The toy car could not get any better than this prototype from Ulf Hanses of the Saab Ride-on Roadtser from Playsam. “Scandinavian wooden toy car inspired by the classic Saab Roadster prototype 92001. The car looks as good as the original Saab cars from the 40s and 50s and is a fully functional push car, it even has a steering wheel made of wood and metal just like old sports car steering wheels.” (dailyicon)

U-BOAT Italo Fontana U-42 Watch

Selectism - U-BOAT Italo Fontana U-42 Watch

Think your 45mm watch is too small? Need bigger? U-BOAT can fix that issue. Their “U-42″ is about as big as anyone will need. It measures at a whopping 65mm with crown! Huge!

“The bi-directional rotating bezel is lockable with a lever on the right side of the case. The U-42’s winding crown was built in two parts: one is attached to the movement stem whilst the other is hinged to it with a pivot. This gives a flexible joint configuration which allows the crown to protrude considerably from the watch itself for winding and setting, yet returning it to a protected, hidden position diminishing the side clutter when in action.” (tz)
