Norse Projects ‘Kaupang’ Knit

Selectism - norse-projects-roll-neck-jumper-01

We’re still thinking about roll neck jumpers. There’s still a stigma attached to them (blame every Hollywood villain of the last 40 years for that) so we understand if you’re iffy on them. The sticking point with roll necks tends to be just how tight the roll neck is. We tend to go by the standard of ‘the looser, the better’ – a tight roll neck is far more ‘Tom Cruise on Oprah’s couch’ than ‘Sixties beatnik’. And no one in their right mind wants to look like the former. (Norse Store)

Beau Colburn does Thursday’s roundup…

01. Radiohead Live in Prague (above)

“On 23rd August 2009 a group of Radiohead fans descended on the Vystaviste Holesovice in Prague on a mission — to capture the band playing using as many different angles as possible.” #recommended
(radiohead-prague)

02. Be Unbeatable

“On the evening of May 23rd, 1945, in the Japanese town of Chiran, Masanobu Kuno sat down and hand-wrote the following farewell letter to his 5-year-old son, Masanori, and 2-year-old daughter, Kiyoko. The next day, Captain Kuno proudly boarded his explosive-laden aircraft, took to the skies and, as did thousands of other Kamikaze pilots  during World War II, deliberately flew his plane into an Allied warship as part of the Battle of Okinawa.” (kottke>letters of note)

03. Vampire Weekend’s Mutinous Muse

“Some music-business insiders whispered that she was squandering the opportunity of a lifetime: Vampire Weekend had transformed this retired catalogue model into the golden mystery girl of indie rock, and she repays them by filing a lawsuit? But they’re missing the point. For the models of Kennis’s generation, there is a right way and a wrong way to recruit a model to sell your product. And in this episode, it’s clear something seems to have gone very wrong indeed.” (vf)

04. The illusion of diversity: visualizing ownership in the soft drink industry

“Three firms control 89% of US soft drink sales. This dominance is obscured from us by the appearance of numerous choices on retailer shelves. Steve Hannaford refers to this as “pseudovariety,” or the illusion of diversity, concealing a lack of real choice . To visualize the extent of pseudovariety in this industry we developed a cluster diagram to represent the number of soft drink brands and varieties found in the refrigerator cases of 94 Michigan retailers, along with their ownership connections.” (good>philiphoward)

Walter Van Beirendonck on Dazed Digital

Selectism - Walter Van Beirendonck on Dazed Digital

Our friends at Dazed Digital have published an interview with the one, Walter Van Beirendonck. The interview piggybacks a longer piece in the September print issue of Dazed with the gentleman.”Walter Van Beirendonck has also been heavily involved in the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Art course since the late 80s. As is sometimes the case with high profile figures attached to subsequently high profile university courses, Walter has much more than a remote connection to the Academy. He is far from a guest lecturer, and in 2007 became the head of the department.” Mr. Beirendonck also points out some of his “to watch” students as part of a 5 day online spread.

Selectism - Artist Music Journal Edition 10 + No Age 10" Vinyl

The mix of music and print is a great one. The mix of two old media formats (which goes beyond the liner notes of a typical LP) is worth noting and studying. Soundscreen Design’s “Artist Music Journal” accomplishes this. Check out Edition 10 of “AMJ.” “Edition 10 in the ongoing Artist Music Journals series features the work of the Los Angeles based designer, artist, musician and label owner Brian Roettinger, whose operates the creative umbrella Hand Held Heart. Unlike any previous Artist Music Journal, this installment includes Brian’s 24-page book as well as a one-sided 10″ record, featuring a collaboration between Brian and No Age with 3 exclusive tracks.”

Dior Chiffre Rouge T01 Watch

Selectism - Dior Chiffre Rouge T01 Watch

Remember the Dior “Red Digit Diver” watch? Now, Dior is back with the Chiffre Rouge T01 Watch. As Luxist tells us, “the watch is 42mm wide in steel, and has a black ceramic bezel (which is nice). The look of the steel with black is carried over on the back of the watch where the sapphire exhibition caseback window has a ring of black around it to match the look of the watch case. Inside the watch is an automatic Calibre Dior 8 Fuseaux Horaires (8 timezones), which is likely a base ETA, and was specially developed for Dior. The watch tells the time, and has a day/night indicator (which is part of the hour hand).”

United Arrows, once again, works with the very best for developing some special in-house goods for their shops. The most recent seems to be this nylon “raingear” worked with Scotland’s Traditional Weatherwear. The packability of the jacket is what works. It is functional and convenient once dropped into pouch and pull form.
