Selectism - "The Authenticity Hoax: How We Get Lost Finding Ourselves" Book

Heard about this one on NPR over the weekend. The Authenticity Hoax: How We Get Lost Finding Ourselves The Authenticity Hoax: How We Get Lost Finding Ourselves Book by Andrew Potter is a complicated exploration on what makes (or what we believe makes) us individuals in the larger world of consumerism, environmental causes, and self worth. While I did not agree with a few statements on his thoughts on “hipsters” (which I personally think is a completely non-valid term for describing a generation trying to figure itself out), it is at least interesting to see how some judge our future. ”

The following from Booklist sums up this entire book: “We live, Potter argues, in a world dominated by the prepackaged and the artificial, the fraudulent and the fake. Growing out of this increasingly bleak cultural landscape is a movement centered on the notion of authenticity: the honest, the natural, the real. That’s all fine and good, Potter says, except for one thing: we don’t have a clue what we mean by authenticity, and even if we did, we wouldn’t know how to find it.”
