A bit of soccer news that might surprise a few of you. The New York Cosmos, famed for bringing Pele to the United States in the 1970s, has reformed. As part of the rebirth, Umbro has come on as official kit supplier and applied the same balance of fine tailoring and on-field performance we’ve seen in the latest England strips.

A bit about the New York Cosmos -

Under new passionate ownership, The New York Cosmos continues its tradition of greatness for the next generation and vows to maintain the same ethos that made The New York Cosmos the most celebrated soccer club in the history of the United States. During its existence from 1971-1985, The New York Cosmos won five national championships. Today, as part of its rebirth and with soccer legend and former Cosmos star Pelé as the Honorary President, The New York Cosmos will continue to inspire and develop the youth through academies, camps and clinics while also attracting world-class soccer players to participate in its soccer movement. The club’s ultimate vision is to be a part of Major League Soccer and to compete for the championship.

Relaunched in August 2010, The New York Cosmos is committed to helping improve the future of football with significant investment in grassroots and youth football, and providing elite coaching philosophies and training opportunities.

The New York Cosmos has launched two elite youth academies, Cosmos Academy East (in New York) and Cosmos Academy West (in Los Angeles) with former Major League Soccer stars Giovanni Savarese and Teddy Chronopoulos appointed as Academy Directors, respectively.  Both academies participate in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. Furthermore, The New York Cosmos acquired the Copa NYC tournament, and beyond running it every year in New York, they will be looking to expand it both domestically and internationally in order to engage more local communities to participate in the global game’ at a grassroots level.

Here’s a piece that’s sure to have been all over the net by now. Heritage Research teamed up with Present for a capsule collection of stadium jackets and here’s our pick of the bunch. Curated recently visited Robert A.M. Stern’s latest edition to the Manhattan skyline, “Located on the Northeast corner of Central Park, 1280 Fifth Avenue boasts design by Robert A.M. Stern and interiors by acclaimed architect Andre Kikoski. As a multi-use building, the structure houses both luxury accommodations and the Museum of African Art – the tenth institution on the famed Museum Mile of Fifth Avenue.”

The location affords some stunning views of Central Park and the model homes are a showcase for Ligne Roset’s latest furnishings. More about the building can be found here.

A patchwork harrington was never on our wish list – mainly because we don’t use wish lists or dream of pieces that don’t exist – but this one works rather well. It helps that the colours used are navy and grey instead of some crazy mish-mash. 01. Bucky Fuller & Spaceship Earth (above)

“Bucky Fuller & Spaceship Earth is the title of a new exhibition looking at the work of buckminster fuller being held at Ivorypress Art + Books in Madrid. The show is running from september 1 to october 30 and is curated by Norman Foster and Luis Fernández-Galiano. the exhibition features drawings and models including the recently completed recreation of the dymaxion car. Foster worked with Fuller for the last 12 years of his life and explains that Fuller  ‘had a profound influence on my own work and thinking’. the new dymaxion car was commissioned by foster based on Fuller’s own drawings and prototypes. the prototype was built in east sussex by the car restoration company Crosthwaite & Gardiner.” (Design Boom).

02. How Intelligence Happens

03. Classic Ryder Cup Encounters

04. SoLost: Po’ Monkey’s Juke Joint

“One of Mississippi’s greatest hidden treasures is Poor Monkey Lounge located in the tiny Delta hamlet of Merigold. Better known simply as “Po Monkeys,” the establishment is one of the oldest juke joints operating in America today. Nestled on the edge of a cotton field nearly two miles down a dirt road in this rural agricultural outpost, Po Monkey’s was created decades back by the irrepressible Willie “Po Monkey” Seaberry (it’s a childhood nickname). While I still prefer  Brooks (personal choice) the ubiquitous San Marco gets another re-work for the Bicycle Film Festival 2010 editions. The Concor Supercorsa “limited edition” is pretty normal, but those gold highlights work in its favor. The gold rails look great as well. (fngds)
