“Salvador Dali: The Late Work” Book

Selectism - "Salvador Dali: The Late Work" Book

Some more network love on this Friday. Curated covers the latest from Yale University Press. “Salvador Dali: The Late Work Salvador Dali: The Late Work Book complements an exhibition of the same name now on view at High Museum in Atlanta (nice web component, FYI). Dali’s output after 1940 has been consider repetitive and overly commercial. As such, scholarly discourse on the material has found it of less importance than his surrealist work. This exhibition and book reevaluates the period in which Dali distanced himself from Modernism.”

Pre-order now from Amazon Salvador Dali: The Late Work Book.

Coast Brewing Company Event Horizon (Dark IPA)

selectism - Coast Brewing Company Event Horizon (Dark IPA)

Located in Noissette, a sustainable community in North Charleston, SC, Coast Brewing Company, is a family run business dead set on energy efficiency. The brewery is run on waste feedstock biodeisel, drawn from a mere 300 yards away.

Environmental impact is also a concern of the Coast Clan. Local and organic ingredients are regular features of their brews. For Autumn, Coast has introduced Event Horizon. They call it a Cascadian Dark Ale or a Dark IPA. The beer is dark (no surprise), high on hops (no surprise), and weighs in with a 6.5% ABV.

They say it has an amazing aroma. You’d have to find a bottle to confirm.

Selectism - Levi’s Workwear by Billy Reid Collection – A Detailed Look

HS gives a “detailed” look into the Levi’s Workwear collection by Billy Reid. “The line is made up of denim, fleece jackets, washed out crewneck sweaters, shirts, t-shirts and a tote bag. We really like what we are seeing and admire how Levi’s balances these days their mass market and more focused niche initiatives.”

selectism - Kirk Bray "In the Moment" at Fifty8 Gallery

Kirk Bray, of BillyKirk, unveiled a new set of paintings last night at Jersey City’s Fifty8 Gallery. The work, entitled In the Moment, is described as “a new collection of paintings depicting life in all its absurdity and preciousness.” There are eleven paintings in all and the exhibition runs through September 28, 2010.

Hats off to Kirk for not just the exhibition, but for continually supporting his local Jersey City art scene as well.

A full preview of Bray’s new work is available at Curated.

Mihara Yasuhiro Varsity Jacket

Here’s part 373464 of our ongoing ‘it’s cool because it’s from Japan’ series. Mihara Yasuhiro is responsible for some of the crazier designs seen on this here site, but he also knows his way around a good varsity jacket (we featured one a while back, but this is an updated version). Shawl collar addicts that we are, we quite like them on our jackets as well as our knitwear. But the most important thing is that it’s from Japan and hard to find -  which makes it cool. (Mindtrive)

Steven Alan ‘Lowell’ Sports Jacket

Selectism - steven-alan-lowell-sports-jacket-01

We know the men’s blogger rulebook states that we should be overexcited by pieces like this (y’know, smart jackets and all that) but that doesn’t usually float our boat. It’s not that we hate tailoring, more that we’re still relatively young and there’s no need for us to dress up every day. But if we did had to dress up, we’d wear this jacket. Those who slavishly follow menswear rules will be glad to know that we won’t be doing up all the buttons (unless we feel like it). [Garbstore]

Selectism - Ukrainian Salt Mines

Beau Colburn does the roundup when he is not writing about iPad Apps for Macworld.

01. Monarch butterflies begin huge migration
“Adding to the mystique is that no one butterfly makes the complete round trip. It takes four or five generations of butterflies to complete, meaning the creatures have some mechanism that guides them to the same southern mating ground year after year.” (cbc)

02. Eerie Ukrainian Salt Mines House Convalescing Asthmatics (above)
“It might be one of the most unconventional hospital wards on Earth, except that technically it’s not on Earth: It’s hundreds of meters below the surface. For decades, the tunnels of the Solotvyno Salt Mine in Ukraine have hosted subterranean convalescents. Patients with various bronchial blockages, asthma and breathing problems are sent to the mines by the Solotvyno’s allergological hospital to suck up the curative air.” (wired)

03. Why Albums Are Released On Tuesdays In The U.S.
“Honestly, no one seems to know for sure. It’s more like a tradition with murky origins. And it happens on Tuesday in the U.S. only — in the U.K. and France release dates are Mondays, in Germany it’s Friday. So if Tuesday isn’t the universally accepted best day to offer new music to customers and there’s no law or grand business wisdom about it, why does everyone put out albums on the same day?” (npr)

04. 22 Incredible Photos of Faraway Places
“Chances are you already know Steve McCurry as the man who took one of the most iconic photos of our time. It was of a 12-year-old Afghan refugee girl who’s piercing green eyes told us her harrowing story. The image itself was named “the most recognized photograph” in the history of the National Geographic magazine and her face became famous as the cover photograph on their June 1985 issue. Beyond just that one photo, McCurry has shot over a million images spanning 35 years.” (mymodernmet)
