Selectism - Production Artisanale 13 Patchwork Hoodie Zipper Sweater

France’s Production Artisanale gets some domestic love over on Opening Ceremony. Their “13″ patchwork zipper hoodie is a great piece coming in just around $350. It is a commitment piece of course but one that will give you years of wear.  The suede leather front patches give it some contrast.

“Fashion’s Night Out” Party Guide on R29

Selectism - "Fashion's Night Out" Party Guide on R29

FNO is hitting 2010 like a speedball at the moment – and for very good reasons and causes. R29 lays out their picks for the Top 11 events you must attend. “If our poor email inboxes are any indication, this maxim certainly proves apt in the case of Fashion’s Night Out, now in its second year. We gave you the heads-up last week on the evening’s not-to-miss beauty bashes, and now we’re turning our gimlet eye to the main event—fashion! We shed blood, sweat, and tears combing through thousands of emails and a paper-mill’s worth of invites to assemble the ultimate list of FNO parties. While we had to chop down soireées from some of our fave friends (sad face), we think the itinerary is comprehensive enough for even the most die-hard fashionista.” Plan ahead.

Mismo Cardholder

Selectism - Mismo Cardholder

Cardholders are arguably an important supplement to a man’s wallet. While I prefer to stuff them into my zipup or flap (depending on which I use for the day), others will appreciate something more permanent. “The Mismo Cardholder is small, but perfectly formed, with enough slots for all your cards, and leather edging to add resilience. This showcases Mismo’s expertise brilliantly and is an incredible, every day essential.” End has them.

Wharton Esherick and the Birth of American Modernism

09 September 2010, 16.20 | Posted in Art | No comments »

selectism - Wharton Esherick and the Birth of American Modernism

A new exhibition on Wharton Esherick, a fascinating and multi-faceted artist, has opened at the University of Pennsylvania. Mounted as a partnership between the Rare Book and Manuscript Library and the Architectural Archives at the University of Pennsylvania,  the Wharton Esherick Museum (Paoli, PA) and Hedgerow Theatre (Rose Valley, PA), the presented material draws fully from Esherick’s diverse output.

About the exhibition -

Wharton Esherick and the Birth of the American Modern, the first major examination of Esherick’s work and artistic development in over fifty years, will explore the social, political, and artistic milieu of the 1920s and 1930s and the role it played in Esherick’s evolution into an artist who spoke through wood. Trained as an illustrator and painter, Esherick’s experiences in modern theater and dance, his exposure to new ideas in philosophy, politics, and literature, and his experiments in carving and printmaking laid the foundation for his emergence as an artist of remarkable range–from painting and prints to set designs, sculpture, furniture and architecture. He and his community of friends created an artistic circle in which radical new ideas flourished and shaped the definition of American Modernism.

For those interested there is a corresponding catalog and there is also a symposium planned for October 1st and 2nd. The exhibition runs through February 13, 2011.

“The Blind Oxford Tasting” Series

Selectism - "The Blind Oxford Tasting" Series

Damn. I wish we had thought of this one ourselves. The Trad (add them to your read list) is pulling some interesting editorial in the form of their “Blind Oxford Tasting” series. This is how Trad is running their blind test: “Each shirt had all tags removed and was numbered 1-5. I washed the shirts three times and then had them professionally laundered with no starch. The shirts were issued at a lunch I hosted last week at a nice little Italian place where I had an amazing plate of grilled octopus but that’s another story.”

Charge at Eurobike

We don’t often report on trade show build outs. There is good enough reason for that… since our founding the old BMF mentality of impermanent displays has pretty much vanished. However, Charge Bikes (an English company with a love of cycling and a cheeky sense of humor) reminds that things can still be interesting. Their circus inspired set up for the recent Eurobike show is good fun – as the video above should prove.

For good measure, we also had James Champion of Charge give us a run down of the new rides. While they are not the fanciest bikes, the continued growth of Charge and the verve they bring to celebrating the fun of cycling keeps our eyes open.

Pictures and words after the jump.

Galliano Patchwork Sweater

Selectism - galliano-patchwork-sweater-01

So this is one of those ‘never say never’ posts. Having watched Galliano’s shows for a while now, it was a fair bet that we’d never feature anything he ever did. Well, never say never, because here’s a patchwork jumper of his. The main shock – apart from Galliano making something someone who didn’t want to look like a pirate could wear – is the pieces relative affordability (£166). It’s not cheap, but it’s something someone on a regular wage could afford. And it looks nice too, which is what we really care about. (Farfetch)

Norse Projects ‘Dalvik’ Plaid Scarf

09 September 2010, 10.30 | Posted in Accessories | 1 comment »

selectism - norse-projects-plaid-scarf

We’re addicted to Norse this season, but can you blame us? We’ve had our eye on this collection since the January tradeshows and now it’s out, you can expect a few more posts on it yet (and some angry comments from folks who had bad days at work). It is a little early to be scarf hunting, but the early bird catches the worm and all that. (Goodhood‘)
