Our Legacy Olive Holdall

08 September 2010, 13.30 | Posted in Accessories | 1 comment »

Selectism - our-legacy-olive-holdall

We’re always game for a holdall, even when it’s called a ‘bin bag’. It’s not exactly the prettiest name, so we’ve just called it a holdall. It is a handsome bag and it’s water resistant – a big plus for these rainy days. Consider it one to add to your (if you frequent this site often) never-ending roster of bags. (Our Legacy)

selectism - Engineered Garments NYC Store Preview

Mister Mort provides the vital information and images for a bit of news sure to excite a few readers – Engineered Garments has a New York Flagship. The report states the location (307 W. 38th Street) is a former sewing machine repair center. Fitting, and its also hard to argue the desire to stay out of trendier neighborhoods to stick in garmento land. The shop will sell Engineered Garments, Nepenthes, and Needles.

Mister Mort also mentions the store will be open today.

Mister Mort snapped some favorite garments on his visit. A few of our favorites (from his favorites) follow.

Three Over One ‘Henry’ Track Pants

selectism - three-over-one-sweatpants

We’re still on the look out for a great pair of track pants, and so far this Three Over One piece is in our top 5. Our most important requirement for these is that they have a taper and these fit the bill. (useless info: we used these in our last seven days but the pictures didn’t quite work). You can also roll up the legs to good effect if you don’t like the stacking on these – and let’s be honest, it’s only a taper and a roll keeping you from looking like you should be a participant of the Jeremy Kyle show (google it non UK dwellers). Selectism - 3191-miles-blog

01. 3191 Miles Apart (Pictured above)

“This week we should be calling this online project 2898 Miles Apart as I have been in Brooklyn, New York and the round-about mileage to Portland, Oregon is just that.” (3191)

02. Jessica Simpson Gets Lucky, Learns to Love Herself

“The celebrity-learns-to-love-herself tale is a tough sell. On the one hand: isn’t appearing on magazine covers confirmation enough that you’ve conformed to society’s beauty standards? Am I really supposed to empathize—or worse, sympathize—with the skinny woman with flawless skin smiling at me from the pages of Lucky? On the other hand: the fame that lands stars in magazines also leads to unwarranted scrutiny, like the massive uproar Simpson faced when she had the audacity to go on stage in a pair of high-waisted jeans. No one cares if I show up to work with a fresh pimple and undereye bags (which—heads up, co-workers!—I totally will be tomorrow), but the bar is set much higher for celebrities.” (Glossed Over)

03. Uncouth

“The smell of freshly fried french fries from McDonalds are intoxicating. I don’t know what it is about their fries, maybe its the extra salt…the crispness..whatever…they are good. I don’t like burger king, and I’ll eat Wendy’s fries by default because I do love their Spicy Chicken Sandwich (#6), but McDonald’s fries are definitely my favourite.” (Luxirare)

04. Report: Afghan Mineral Deposits Could Completely Revolutionize Nation’s System Of Corruption

“According to a new State Department report, Afghanistan’s more than $900 billion worth of untapped iron, copper, lithium, and other minerals could transform the nation from a graft-laden backwater into a modern, 21st-century hub of corruption.” (The Onion)

Selectism - Shake Appeal Autumn 2010 Looks

Fashionisto gives us his viewpoint on the Autumn 2010 Shake Appeal collection of garments. “After a season’s break, Shake Appeal returns with a fall collection inspired by the quirky world of Wes Anderson and his eccentric characters. In a season where awkwardness goes a long way, the Thailand-based label accents their latest outing with a pale color palette and a playful shift in proportions. From a leggy fall to in your face functional pockets, Shake Appeal lays the groundwork for a smart new season.”

Carlos Zéfiro’s Brazilian Sex Comics (comix)

Selectism - Carlos Zéfiro's Brazilian Sex Comics (comix)

Here’s one look into Brazilian “comix” scene from the 50’s and 60’s that revolved around the most coveted topic of the day – sex. “During Brazil’s military years (1954 – 1982), one man was responsible for the sexual education of generations of Brazilians. This man called himself Carlos Zéfiro, and he designed and illustrated small pornographic comics that were sold all over Brazil for more than 30 years… Zéfiro was the nickname of a clerk named Alcides de Aguiar Caminha Filho. It is believed that during his lifetime he produced more than 800 issues.”

Workers “Reliance” Work Shirts

Selectism - Workers "Reliance" Work Shirts

Now, they’re not directly titled “Milton F. Goodman” shirts but a quick Google Books query did direct me at the man and company behind the latest collection of  thread perfect interpretations of the classic work shirts from Workers Japan. Google Books is incredible to say the least. Here’s the link to an old article from around 1922 discussing how the Reliance company, which Milton F. Goodman ran and operated targeting “farmer” accounts. Fascinating.

In the meantime, Workers will put their versions of the Reliance shirts on sale on Sept. 10. The quality of these garments will be impeccable as usual. Expect some slight refinements from the originals.

FREITAG “REFERENCE” Line of Bags and Accessories

Selectism - FREITAG "REFERENCE" Line of Bags and Accessories

Here’s a new one from the Swiss FREITAG coompany. “Like hot meets cold, the new FREITAG REFERENCE line is the meltdown of neo and retro: on one hand inspired by horse messengers of the 1800s, on the other hand initiated and endorsed by contemporary journalists. The style REFERENCE for the new line is that of military and civilian messengers of the 1800’s. The shapes, the buckles and the unicolored look of the tarps are classic to the bone.”

The REFERENCE collection is cut from vintage “unicolor” tarps. In my opinion, the look is cleaner than previous FREITAG collections. 22 styles in total are available.
