Riggs Workwear “Denim Shirt” by Wrangler

Selectism - Riggs Workwear “Denim Shirt” by Wrangler

A workwear division of Wrangler, Riggs Workwear, introduced their “Denim Workshirt.” The company has also developed “Room2Move” styling, which incorporates side gussets for “greater range of motion.” At a 6.75 oz 100%  cotton, this shirt is made of “ring spun denim” that uses a stonewashing procedure for its look. If you’re looking to subtle out a flannel this Fall, a lighter colored denim shirt could set the tone. A great layering piece, it looks great with a slim pair of twill pants. The shirt’s available at Sheplers.(gb)

First Look | Church’s Spring/Summer 2011

Selectism - churchs-spring-2011-01

We know it’s just getting to real autumn (or fall if you don’t speak proper English) but here’s a first look at Church’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection. In the past few years Church’s spring collections have been more interesting than their autumn ones; a trend that continues with their SS11 collection. Although there isn’t much ‘new’ – although it can be argued that a company like Church’s should be focused on refining rather than the bells and whistles – they’ve added the likes of red brick soled suede loafers (above), as well as contrast stitched derbies and suede oxfords. There’s even a pair of double monks for the DM lover crowd.

Take a leap to see more from the collection.

Crockett & Jones ‘Grasmere’ Derby

Selectism - crockett-jones-grasmere-derby-01

We haven’t posted an old-school handsome shoe in a while, so here goes. We’re still weighing up whether we prefer derbies over brogues and you know what? It depends. We’re aware that the cost-conscious will balk at the £295 price tag but, as we often say, spend more on less and you’ll have the better wardrobe. Anyway, what’s the point of having all the shoe styles in the world if they all break down in a couple of seasons? (Edwards)

Take a leap, see those detailed images

Taking comics seriously. Visual storytelling is about literature as well as literacy

01. Listen to the Longest Daft Punk Tron Clip Yet

“Go to the Tron: Legacy Facebook page to hear a whole minute-and-a-half clip of a track called “The Game Has Changed”. It is guaranteed to make you feel like a superhero on your way out of work. The soundtrack is out December 7. And that photo up there is a promo pic of Daft Punk all Tron-ed out. Read about the duo’s cameo in the film here.” (pitchfork)

02. Taking comics seriously. Visual storytelling is about literature as well as literacy (above)

“The graphic novel’s rise in popularity shouldn’t really come as a surprise, write Metaphrog’s Sandra Marrs and John Chalmers. After all, we are living in an increasingly visual culture, an accelerated culture, where work and leisure time often blur and usually involve screens screaming with images. Understanding these images is something innate, both simple and complex at the same time.” (eyeblog)

03. Working Title: Makeshift Solutions become Casual Furniture

“Berlin-based Johanna Dehio has released a series of furniture based on makeshift solutions, playing up our tendency to stack, lean and perch in a series of participatory products. A favorite is “Wandwinkel,” or wall-angles, a sideboard and mirror that lean against the wall at an angle that makes them just stable. A similar gesture, “Kleiderstiele,” or clothing-sticks, is a boiled-down coat rack—a broomstick to hold garments.” (core77)

04. Everything You Know Is Pong Book

Everything You Know Is Pong Selectism | Around the Web is the most important book you’ll ever buy. Well, the most important book about sports you’ll ever buy. Fine, the most important book about table tennis, ever. “This book tells the ripping story of Ping Pong’s definitive role on global politics, history, and culture with additional fabulous insights from our friends in Pong including Nick Hornby, Jonathan Safran Foer, and fresh off his Booker prize win, Howard Jacobson.” (joshspear)

Jack Spade Tarpaulin Dry Dopp Kit

Tarpaulin just lasts. While not as proper as a leather pouch, this toiletry bag works on functionality alone and color. Jack Spade’s take:  ”Tarpaulin is an unlined industrial grade material designed for water resistance and maximum durability. All styles are detailed with a screened exterior address label, custom Jack Spade die cast hardware and #5 molded plastic zippers.” Available in black or forest green.

Penfield Stapleton Jacket

Penfield Stapleton Jacket

Conversations abound regarding Penfield’s growing presence in a world once dominated by Polo. The brand’s reach and presence in varying circles has it poised for something bigger than most while remaning strong in design and fit. Penfield, a legacy brand from my neck of the woods, is most likely seeing larger growth and exposure today then it did when it first launched. If it hasn’t, it will. The Penfield Stapleton jacket is a solid example pulling from their back catalog. Need Supply has them.

ACL Inside Horween Leather

ACL Inside Horween Leather

Our friends at ACL get work their excellent cam setup for some looks inside Chicago’s Horween Leather. “This past summer I took a trip to visit the Horween tannery in Chicago. The purpose of the trip was to document the process of making shell cordovan for Wolverine. (Full disclosure, Wolverine is a client of my marketing firm Paul + Williams.) The cordovan would eventually be used in the making of the newly released Wolverine 1000 Mile 721LTD boots. To be able to go out there, see the Horween plant and document everything was really an amazing experience.”
