Furniture buffs should head over to the MET for the magnificent new exhibition, The Artistic Furniture of Charles Rohlfs. Based in Buffalo, New York, Rohlfs drew inspiration from both the Art Nouveau and the Arts & Crafts movement. His designs, and particularly his carved furniture, generated high praise for his workshop from across the globe.

The Artistic Furniture of Charles Rohlfs runs to January 23, 2011.

Soulland Andreasen Jacket

While we love our chunky knitwear, a little light layering never hurt nobody (and neither did a double negative). That’s what this Soulland piece is perfect for; layer it under a bigger jacket for a suitably gillet-esque look or wear it solo on those slightly warmer days. It’s also great for visiting those places that are unbearably warm in the dead of winter. You know, the kind of place where a chunky knit seems like a great idea – until you get inside and start sweating like Damon Stoudamire at an airport metal detector. (Norse Store)

Factotum Jacket

Selectism - factotum-bomber-jacket-01

We don’t know what’s happened to use, but we’ve turned into suckers for any sort of jacket that can do double duty. A reversible jacket? we’re on it. A Jacket with removable arms? we’re on it. A gilet with attachable arms? we’re on it (the last two examples were the same thing, but you get the point).

This Factotum jacket comes with removable arms, fulfilling our removable arm fetish. You should also be glad to know that the company are planning a push overseas soon, so you might actually be able to buy it without a proxy from next season onwards. But for now you’ll be well served keeping that proxy’s email address handy. (Mindtrive)

02. Design For You: The Eames Plywood Splint

“Today is the last day to go into the draw for the Eames plywood splint. I was at the Eames Office recently and couldn’t resist snapping their display of splints. These light weight plywood pieces were the Eames’ response to the heavy stiff metal splints that were used during WWII. About 150,000 of the Eames product were produced. When the war ended the Charles and Ray took the work they’d done with the splint and molding plywood and used it in their furniture designs.” (hmlifework)

Transparent Mobile Phone by Tokujin Yoshioka

xray mobilephone 1 Transparent Mobile Phone by Tokujin Yoshioka

Core77 previews an exceptional mobile design for the Japanese market “Tokujin Yoshioka … has designed the X-RAY phone for handset manufacturer KDDI’s designer label iida. Like those see-through phones from childhood, but better, because in their extreme miniaturization, cell phones have many hundreds more tiny micro circuits to gape at. At first, it was hard to tell how this works from the press photos, but after poking around on the iida site, we realized that it’s a flip phone, not some insanely sophisticated all-clad see through touch screen.”
