Selectism - "Living Modern: The Sourcebook of Contemporary Interiors" Book

The Lifework Blog turns us onto a new book published by  Thames and Hudson of Richard Powers‘ photographs called Living Modern: The Sourcebook of Contemporary Interiors Living Modern: The Sourcebook of Contemporary Interiors Book. “Richard produces some of the most amazing interiors shoots. He has an extraordinary eye for light that lifts every single shot from the mundane. Plus he was one of those hard working, even-keeled people who make working in the magazine industry fun instead of a chore. And I am sure that attitude also helps him get access to incredible homes.”

Selectism - Q&A With Andy Spade on WSJ

WSJ creeps in an interview/QA with Jack Spade’s Andy Spade. “After co-creating the mega accessories brands Kate Spade and Jack Spade, selling them and then fleeing corporate life, Andy Spade has just launched an unusual hybrid advertising agency-gallery-boutique called Partners & Spade. In his Manhattan storefront, he sells whimsical collectibles including Ghanaian flags, vintage hotel soaps and antique microphones and hosts art exhibits. In his back room, he produces films and photography books, and advises companies like J. Crew.”

Bside Bed by Frederico Bergese

selectism - Bside Bed by Frederico Bergese

Spotted on Industrial Design Served, Frederico Bergese’s “Bside Bed” mixes a graceful bent wood frame with a hidden technological core. The sweeping upper portion is far from superfluous, housing an internal light that functions (clearly) for reading.

Certainly, not to suit every taste. But, certainly an inventive take on a typically narrowly explored form.

Let’s honor Art Tatum, the piano genius, who was born on October 13, 1909, in Toledo, Ohio. (Jazzonthetube).

02. New Cathay Pacific Airport Lounge by Foster + Partners (above).

“‘The Cabin’ is the latest addition to the Cathay Pacific lounge collection at Hong Kong International Airport. Combining the highest quality materials with a new seating system designed by Foster + Partners, it will transform the experience for passengers using Hong Kong’s flag carrier. The design supports Cathay Pacific’s concept for a high-quality lounge that can accommodate both First and Business Class passengers, while maximising the available space for relaxation and the airline’s range of hospitality facilities.” (Contemporist).

03. Ron Artest, Kobe not sweating LeBron

“If you ask the Los Angeles Lakers’ Ron Artest, the biggest NBA signing of the summer wasn’t LeBron James leaving Cleveland to go to Miami as a free agent; it was Kevin Durant extending his contract with the Thunder to stay in Oklahoma City.” (ESPN).

04. To the Curious in Vegetables: A Brief History of the Pineapple in London

“I like pineapple; it feels as if it’s doing you good.  Pineapple is a helpful fruit.  It’s also one of those imports which lost all its exoticism in the late 20th century when we were force fed it with condensed milk and now that fresh pineapple is so readily available it doesn’t have quite the desirable edge it once did.  In Georgian London though, pineapple was very desirable indeed.  The first imports are unknown, although Elizabethan adventurers encountered it.  In 1675, Charles II was pictured receiving a pineapple, supposedly the first successfully cultivated on English soil, from his gardener John Rose.” (Georgian London).
