Selectism - Just Like Heaven

Beau Colburn does the roundup and loves Phish.

01. Breaking curveball an illusion, scientists say
“The curveball does curve, but the curve has been measured and shown to be gradual,” Shapiro said. “It’s always going to follow a parabolic path. But from a hitter’s point of view, an approaching ball can appear to break, drop or do a whole range of unusual behaviors.” (msnbc)

02. Just Like Heaven (above)
“When I opened the “Happy Place” theme that became this showcase, I expected vacation photos. Umbrellas in drinks, ski slopes, shopping malls, that kind of thing. But I’m delighted that instead you submitted so many moments of joy from normal life. Rapture in the routine. Appreciation of the little daily details. These are the moments that matter — count them when they come and remember them when they don’t.” (pictory)

03.India’s Richest Man Builds a Private Island in the Middle of Mumbai
“Flouting Prime Minister Singh’s call for India’s new business elite to be “role models of moderation,” it features three helicopter pads, underground parking for 160 cars, a gym, a dance studio, a ballroom, lounges (plural), a 50-seat cinema, an elevated garden with room for small trees, and it requires a staff of 600 to maintain.” (newyork)

04. What it means to work today
“Let’s order too much of something just to see where our limits are. Let’s take a chance precisely because it might fail. Let’s take the hard way out. Let’s go to the moon. Fuck it; let’s go to the moon again. Let’s quit our jobs. Let’s work at being better at what we do by fucking up faster, not less. Let’s fuck up really fast. Let’s wrestle sharks, fight monsters, and disagree with the board. Let’s borrow so much money it becomes someone else’s problem. Let’s start a 10-hour drive by announcing “I’m not into you anymore.” Let’s dump everything out of the garage onto the sidewalk and build something really cool in that space. Let’s start out to build a better mousetrap, and halfway there let’s decide to jump on the mice’s team. Let’s bet on a longshot. Let’s buy her a drink.” (good)

Selectism - The Black Keys Dress Up Kit

Halloween. On it. Go The Black Keys route for only $20 smackers. “Don’t know what to be for Halloween? Well now you can be The (fake) Black Keys. This dress-up kit includes one pair of glasses kinda like Pat’s and one false beard vaguely suggestive of Dan’s real one.” Yes, this is an official product.

Charles and Ray Eames “Power of Ten” Official Website

After years of bootlegs on Youtube, Herman Miller lends a helping hand with a new official website for the “Power of Ten” film. “Powers of Ten is a 1968 American documentary short film written and directed by Ray Eames and her husband, Charles Eames, rereleased in 1977. The film depicts the relative scale of the Universe in factors of ten (see also logarithmic scale and order of magnitude). The film is an adaptation of the 1957 book Cosmic View by Kees Boeke, and more recently is the basis of a new book version. Both adaptations, film and book, follow the form of the Boeke original, adding color and photography to the black and white drawings employed by Boeke in his seminal work.” (arkitip)

Selectism - Bernhard Willhelm, Camper To&ether Sneakers

Thank god someone is moving forward. While heritage pulls us back, the forward thinkers do not stop the motion of fashion as it re-interprets and recognizes that there is space for change. Bernhard Willhelm is one of them. Like the auto world, his fashion plays with “concepts” which eventually will make their way into the mainstream. “The Fall 10 offering from the Bernhard Willhelm x Camper To&ether collaboration – a hi top/ hiking boot hybrid, seen here in a tan suede and brown leather upper with a soft nylon tongue and thick cord lace.” Oki-ni has them on pre-order.

SeaVees 09/65 Bayside Moccasin

selectism - SeaVees 09/65 Bayside Moccasin

“In September 1965 the San Francisco Examiner is the first to observe the birth of the hippie movement. The newspaper notes in its September 6th edition that the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, California has become ‘a hip hangout’ for beatniks.”

That’s the feeling and inspiration behind SeaVees Bayside Moccasin. It is a hand-sewn shoe, with leather upper and rawhide laces. Add a “SeaVulc” sole (their patented natural rubber manufacturing process) and one gets some sneaker comfort from a refined shoe.

More images after the jump.
