selectism - Recent Acquisitions: Digital Typography at the Cooper-Hewitt

If you are a typography geek (like Jeff), you may want to head to New York’s Museum Mile and check out the Cooper-Hewitt’s recent acquisitions of digital typography. “This installation of five recently acquired graphic works will explore post-modernist trends in typography. On view will be examples of lively and expressive type fonts developed by designers as a counterpoint to modernism’s rigid and impersonal sans serif type. The objects include: Dutch designer Wim Crouwel’s 1969 poster ‘Visuele Communicatie Nederland, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam,’ the 1994 issue of Emigre magazine, published by graphic designers’ Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko, and featuring the work of Ian Anderson for The Designers Republic; Cornel Windlin and Gilles Gavillet’s 1999 poster ‘Game Over;’ Dutch designer Michiel Schuurman’s 2007 poster ‘HorseProjectSpace Presents: Ritual Tendencies;’ and Marian Bantjes’ 2006 ‘Fox River Promotion Booklet.’”

MHL Khaki Pocket Raincoat

selectism - margaret-howell-raincoat

Choosing great pieces from a Margaret Howell collection isn’t the hardest of tasks, but here’s one we’ve especially taken to. We’ve been obsessed with raincoats for the last few months but we haven’t started getting the snarky comments we get on Springcourts and desert boots*, so we’re gonna keep on trucking. We don’t really have much to say about this piece really – it looks good, it’ll keep your head dry, what more would you want from a coat? (South Willard)

Uniqlo +J Wool Flannel Trousers

selectism - uniqlo-jil-sander-wool-trousers

So the +J collection just ‘dropped’ (we’re not street enough to use that word without quotations) and here’s an early pick. We say early pick because there’s at least 6 or 7 blog worthy pieces in this collection, so you’ll be seeing more of this collection as the week’s go on. Anyone’s who’s been looking for a pair of trousers should look no further, because this flannel pair come in grey and navy, lack any silly embellishments and generally just look good. It’s that simple sometimes. (Uniqlo)

01. In California, Pot Is Now an Art Patron (above)

Nonprofit arts groups tend to spend much of their time scrounging for grants and praying for corporate largesse. But one art foundation taking shape on 120 acres in the high oak chaparral of Sonoma County has different kinds of worries these days: spider mites, bud rot and the occasional low-flying surveillance visit from the local Sheriff’s Office. (NYT).

02.  An Introduction to Graphic Design

“Graphic design is an international language composed of signs and symbols, marks and logos, banners and billboards, pictures and words. As visual communicators, graphic designers maintain a delicate balance between clarity and innovation: if too much of the former is a snooze, too much of the latter yields chaos. In between lies a complex series of negotiations which lead, in turn, to a host of applications — the same logo engraved on an envelope one day, emblazoned on a truck the next — and therein lies the designer’s peculiar, if paradoxical challenge. Succeed, and the world works a little better as a result. Fail, and — well, you’ve got the butterfly ballot.” (DO).

03. Past & Present: Windsor Chair History + Resources

“If you look at the chair above and think “Thanksgiving” or “apple picking in New England,” there’s a good reason for that! While the Windsor chair may evoke a New England country B&B, as the name suggests, the form is actually English. In 18th-century England, the chairs were used in the Windsor castle garden. They soon became popular garden seats throughout the country and were often painted green or simply left to weather. By the late 1750s, the English Windsor chair was ubiquitous indoors as well as outdoors and would have been used everywhere from inns and taverns to libraries and meeting houses.” (Design*Sponge).

04. Tobacco Packaging Papers

“‘Tobacco was among the first commodities to be sold in printed paper wrappers,’ writes Michael Twyman, in his Enclyclopedia of Ephemera. (Graphic Arts).

Selectism - Vittorio J Select Series Necktie Collection

NYC’s Vittorio J delivers an 85 neckties “produced in three-fold silk with genuine Italian manufacturing.” Named, the “Select Series,” the collection features a slimmer necktie at 3.35 inches – caused by a factory error. Where some would pass this over and trash the output, Vittorio J looks to have embraced the “error.” The neckties feature “saddle stitching, high-quality NAPOLI + TELA lining and old world craftsmanship, the result is a line of collectible neckwear items unlike anything else on the market.”
