New from Yale University Press, Alan Allport’s Demobbed: Coming Home After World War Two.

What happened when millions of British servicemen were “demobbed”—demobilized—after World War II? Most had been absent for years, and the joy of arrival was often clouded with ambivalence, regrets, and fears. Returning soldiers faced both practical and psychological problems, from reasserting their place in the family home to rejoining a much-altered labor force. Civilians worried that their homecoming heroes had been barbarized by their experiences and would bring crime and violence back from the battlefield. Drawing on personal letters and diaries, newspapers, reports, novels, and films, Alan Allport illuminates the darker side of the homecoming experience for ex-servicemen, their families, and society at large—a gripping story that’s in danger of being lost to national memory.

Allport is a postdoctoral lecturer at Princeton. His book is a must for all military history buffs, and those celebrating the good old days of mid-century America.

Goodwear has been manufacturing apparel in the U.S.A for 25 years. The brand’s hallmark was established with their, “classic heavyweight T, with tubular construction and two-needle detailing.” They have since evolved and introduced a full-line of apparel. The 100% cotton fabric and “three-woodtone buttons” give the shirt a pretty classic feel. Wear it to line a flannel shirt or jacket in your wardrobe. Hitting market this week, Oliberte Footwear’s Adibo, a crepe soled desert boot, looks pretty good, but has a far more handsome backstory.

Though based in Canada, Oliberte focuses its manufacturing and sourcing in Ethiopia, Kenya and Liberia. The intent of the company is to help support an African middle class, providing thousands of jobs and encouraging wider economic stimulus on the Continent. The Abido, for example, are handmade in Ethiopia.

There are, as you’ll be aware, a good number of ethical and socially conscious footwear brands. Whether the goal is to provide shoes for those in need, give proceeds back to environmentally damaged communities, or provide jobs where they hadn’t previously existed, we support good ideas.
