Norse Projects for Hestra ‘Staale’ Gloves

Selectism - norse-hestra-gloves-01

Forgive the deluge of Norse this season but we’ve been looking forward to sharing this collection ever since the tradeshows. We’re probably (read: definitely) jumping the gun on recommending gloves at this time of year, but it’s good to be prepared, if only because there’s always pesky early adopters who buy all the best gloves. And if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Or just buy these first, whichever phrase suits. (Goodhood)

lama 50 076 curatedmag Celebrating 50 Auctions Dedicated to Modern Art & Design at Los Angeles Modern Auctions

Curated reports that, “On October 17, 2010, Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) – L.A.’s premier auction house for vintage 20th Century Modern Art, Design and Furniture – celebrates its 50th Auction since opening in 1992. The sale, focused on 20th-Century Modern Art, Design and Furniture will include a strong selection of Fine Art, such as original works by Pablo Picasso, Ed Ruscha, Bernard Buffet, Niki de Saint Phalle, and John McLaughlin, as well as rare fine prints and multiples by David Hockney, Claude Lalanne, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.  Also, a collection of five Gertrud and Otto Natzler ceramics will trade hands for the first time since original purchase in the 1950s, one of which is a very large exhibition piece with the desirable volcanic glaze.”

Above is lot 76, a pair of “Easy Edges” lounge chairs by Frank O. Gehry. Design in 1972, the corrugated cardboard chairs are estimated to sell for $6,000-9,000.

Omar Kashoura Sponge Jacket

One of the more annoying comments we get  – although they all seem to have taken a negative turn of late – is the ‘you can get this at (insert awful quality high street store here) kind. We’ve often said that some pieces you just have to feel to understand it’s quality and this is one of them. It’s made from navy marl – yes the kind used in sweatpants – which has copper woven throughout. The end result is a ridonkoulously soft blazer that can be worn to a smart event (funerals excluded, obviously). Fancy phrases are great for explanation but sometimes just copping a feel is enough to see that this is several steps above whatever you can get from J.Crew. Just trust us, have we ever let you down? (don’t answer that). [Daniel Jenkins]

Selectism - Understand Rap

01. Francoise Nielly does the ‘art car’ thing on Citroën’s Survolt concept

“A collaboration between Citroën and French artist Francoise Nielly, the resprayed Survolt just may be expressive enough to give all those BMW art cars a run for their money. The one-of-a-kind vehicle is set to displayed at C42, Citroën’s flagship showroom on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, but if your Air France frequent flier miles isn’t up to the job just yet, you can take the shorter trip to our own gallery below for a closer look.” (autoblog)

02. The Forest Chair is located in a small forest…

“The Forest Chair is located in a small forest in Jerusalem. The idea was to build a chair in only one day, using materials that were found in the back yard of Studio Kahn.” (notcot)

03. Understand Rap (above)

“Seattle-based writer William Buckholz steps in with his book “Understand Rap: Explanations of Confusing Rap Lyrics You and Your Grandma Can Understand Selectism | Around the Web.” The result is exhaustive and seemingly in earnest, making for hilariously thorough explanations of double entendres in the same class as the Twitter stream English50cent.” (coolhunting)

04. Vienna Design Week 2010: A public bench that grows longer over time

“At the beginning of the Vienna Design week, Milan-based collective Esterni began a ten-day intervention on the streets of Vienna. Specialising in developing cultural exchange projects in public spaces since 1995, Esterni took over the Palffygasse in the Hernals district of Vienna and created, with Patrick Hubmann, Everybody’s Bench.” (core77)

Yale Co-Op GANT Campus Store Coming Soon

Yale Co-Op GANT Campus Store Coming Soon

Full disclosure: I bought a GANT Rugger shirt this weekend, so they’re on the mind. We recived word of the forthcoming GANT Campus store coming to Yale University in New Haven very soon. “Located at 268 York Street and Broadway next to the original J.Press shop, the 2400 square foot Gant Campus Store will be housed within a historic building originally built in 1910 expressly as a men’s clothing store and designed to match Yale’s Collegiate Gothic architectural style. The store concept, unique to New Haven, will have a library feel that pays homage to the brand’s local historical significance and university-centric roots.”

You’ll find a good deal of GANT Yale co-branded shirts as first seen in the 1960’s as well as new looks under the Yale Co-Op Gant Campus Store label. More as we receive it…

Schott for Barneys Bomber Jacket

11 October 2010, 20.18 | Posted in Fashion | 1 comment »

selectism - Schott for Barneys Bomber Jacket

The standout duo in Schott’s second exclusive set of coats for Barneys is a pair of bomber jackets. “A take on the G1 Bombers Schott created for the air force of the US Navy in WWII. The removable collar is made of genuine mouton. USN is pinned into the front wind strip like the originals.” The above version flips an authentic material, goatskin, by presenting a black finish instead of the traditional brown. Don’t worry though, brown is also an option and made with a naked cowhide prepared to age gracefully.

The full range of Schott for Barneys Autumn 2010 jackets (which includes a Peacoat, Perfecto, Rancher, and Varsity) can be viewed at Barneys.

Check out the brown bomber after the jump.

Selectism - Alexis Mabille for Pyrenex Quilted Jackets

Some wonderful alternatives from Pyrenex with the help of Alexis Mabille (we first discussed their Dover Street install a while back). The jackets are lightweight and airy and filled with feathers. Studiohomme has a selection of them. Choose between quilted, flat front, and vests – whatever you like.
