Video | Sit and Read for Unis

http://www.vimeo.com/16748760

“Process video of Kyle Garner, from Sit and Read, reupholstering a Jens Risom Lounge Chair using fabric directly from the UNIS Fall 2010 line.”

Mr. Garner’s been providing UNIS with freshly upholstered mid-century classics for some time now. It is nice to see his work in action. Additionally, the video serves as an introduction to the new Sit and Read website… be sure to keep that on your radar if vintage and mid-century furnishings are your thing.

Copper ‘Oh Deer’ Coat Rack

Selectism - deer-antler-coat-rack

To paraphrase every rapper with poor grammar, a little whimsy never hurt nobody. We’d usually steer clear of anything in copper, but if you have the type of house that could do with some livening up, this will do the trick. (Dutch by design)

Supergrau ‘Wrench’ Knife Block

Selectism - supergrau-wrench-knife-block

This is far from a necessity (not that anything we ever post up can genuinely be called that anyhoo) but this Knife block looks good. Some might even call it a kitchen staple. The regular version can fit six knives and, if that’s not enough, you can add another hexagon to fit twelve. It’s available from Supergrau’s online shop.

Oyster By Kawamura Ganjavian

Curated turns us onto this space saving chair.

“Kawamura-Ganjavian’s Oyster chair is a real space saver. “Oyster is a versatile piece of furniture: when folded it is a cushion, and when unfolded it creates an individual private ‘shelter’. It’s also easy to transport and store away, making it suitable for those with limited living space.”

Bedwin & The Heartbreakers ‘Alvin’ Jacket

Selectism - bedwin-heartbreakers-alvin-jacket-01

Layer up a storm with this denim coverall jacket. It’s getting a little chilly out there, so (obvious advice alert!!) it’d would be better under an overcoat than on it’s own. Aside from that it’s as crispy, heritage, menswear, workwear and americana as you can get. Get your ‘on the Waterfront’ on whilst sipping a flat white. (Garbstore)

Herring Monarch Slippers

Selectism - herring-monarch-purple-slippers-01

We’ve been on the lookout for some house slippers lately. We were tempted to go the cheap route, but then we saw these. They’re an acquired taste but we feel that we (and you readers) are bawsy enough to pull them off. And yes, they are £120 – but you’ve gotta pay the cost to look like a bawse. (Herring)

Mr Hare ‘Aint no app for that’ Spring/Summer 2011

22 November 2010, 11.30 | Posted in Shoes | 3 comments »

Selectism - mr-hare-spring-2011-07

We’re gonna kick off this Monday morning with an up close look at Mr Hare. Continuing his reign as maker of the segsiest shoes out there (a title he strangely leaves off any press releases….) this collection sees a couple new shapes join the team, alongside some revamps and re-releases. It’s tough to pick a favourite, but we’re rather partial to the King Tubby in salmon skin (pictured above).

Take a leap to see the rest of the collection and an announcement from Mr Hare himself.

Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair Chunk Cardigan

Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair Chunk Cardigan

Swedish brand, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, shows us their take on a contemporary cardigan. The “Chunk Cardie” takes lots of inspiration from the classic cable knit “longshoreman” style sweater. The “super chunky knit, large front pockets and hidden metal press buttons” make for a superior piece. At 100% acrylic, this would make a perfect layering sweater and a solid addition to any Fall arsenal. The cardigan is available at FifthAvenueShoeRepair.

“Minimalism and Fashion: Reduction in the Postmodern Era” Book

"Minimalism and Fashion: Reduction in the Postmodern Era" Book

I read a review of Elyssa Dimant’s book, Minimalism and Fashion Minimalism and Fashion: Reduction in the Postmodern Era Book in the New York Times during a flight last week. The review focused in on how current fashion trends (the progressive ones – less so workwear) mix in influence from current art and architecture movements. While slightly focused on womenswear, the story is much bigger. From NYT:

“Ms. Dimant examined the role of minimalism in fashion, but also looked at the broader context of its appearance in art, architecture and design…  One of the most intriguing aspects of her book is the juxtaposition of runway looks with art and sculpture, such as an organic piece by Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher opposite dresses from an unrelated resort collection by the Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa, or a Richard Serra installation of curling metal plates next to Hussein Chalayan’s coffee-table dress from 2000.”
