selectism - around the web

01. Fakes, Forgeries, and Mysteries

“Watch museum experts solve the DIA’s greatest art mysteries!” (Art Babble).

02. Like Cormac McCarthy, But Funny

“In 1964, in the midst of so-called Swinging London, Charles McColl Portis had Karl Marx’s old job. Portis (who turns seventy this year) was thirty at the time, not yet a novelist, just a newspaperman seemingly blessed by that guild’s gods. His situational Marxism would have been hard to predict. Delivered into this world by the “ominous Dr. Slaughter” in El Dorado, Arkansas, in 1933, Charles Portis—sometimes “Charlie” or “Buddy”—had grown up in towns along the Arkla border, enlisted in the Marines after high school and fought in the Korean War. Upon his discharge in 1955, he majored in journalism at the University of Arkansas (imagining it might be “fun and not very hard, something like barber college”), and after graduation worked at the appealingly named Memphis Commercial Appeal. He soon returned to his native state, writing for the Arkansas Gazette in Little Rock.” (Believer).

03. Hermes Debuts “Petit h,” a Line of Accessories Made from Upcycled Scraps (Above)

“Hermès isn’t about to win any PETA awards anytime soon, but that won’t stop the luxury leathermonger from taking a stab at sustainability. The house that launched a thousand Birkins has spun off the “Petit h” collection, a series of “unidentified poetic objects” cobbled together from defective inventory and factory-floor leftovers. Under the direction of Pascale Mussard, the great-great-great-granddaughter of Thierry Hermès, who made a name for himself fashioning harnesses and bridles, company artisans transform castoff teapot spouts into jewelry hangers, flawed crystal tableware into a set of dumbbells, and leather scraps into a dramatic necklace.” (Ecouterre).

04. My guide to derby day by Martin Keown

“With all the pre-match hype and the venom from the fans, it is easy to lose your head. Playing at White Hart Lane in 1999 I was sent off at the death for a stupid tackle. But the fans were so loud because Tottenham were winning by that point that I felt I had to match their passion and got it wrong. I always found the north London derby the fiercest while the Merseyside fans seemed friendlier.” (Daily Mail).

“Locals Only – California Skateboarding 1975-1978″ Book

"Locals Only" Book

Locals Only Locals Only California Skateboarding 1975 1978 Book is the photographic history of the the 70’s California skate scene during the height of the drought which lead to explosion in not only bowl riding but the sport of skateboarding. “One afternoon in 1975, a young photographer named Hugh Holland drove up Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Los Angeles and encountered skateboarders carving up the drainage ditches along the side of the canyon. Immediately transfixed by their grace and athleticism, he knew he had found an amazing subject. Although not a skateboarder himself, for the next three years Holland never tired of documenting skateboarders surfing the streets of Los Angeles, parts of the San Fernando Valley, Venice Beach, and as far away as San Francisco and Baja California, Mexico.”

Vivienne Westwood Autumn/Winter 2011

Vivienne Westwood Fall 2011

Style gives their look into the Autumn 2011 collection from Vivienne Westwood. “A Vivienne Westwood show, at least in the current era, is an opportunity for a little soapboxing and a little showboating from Dame Vivienne. Her men’s collection today provided both: a reminder about the seriousness of climate change (a warning was stamped on her invites and projected on the wall) and about the serious commitment she makes to madcap mania—sartorially speaking, at least.” Loving the bag and shoes above.

First Look | 18 Waits Spring/Summer 2011

18 Waits previews their Spring/Summer 2011 with a unisex lookbook. While I am not a fan of over explanations on the focus of collection, I did like this one line from their release: “ It’s a way of life inspired by a joie de vivre and an appreciation of the finer things in life like an old pair of leather boots or a child’s painting.” What they’re saying to me at least is that they just make clothes. Is that a full-size of portable typewriter. I would hope portable.

Moncler Gamme Bleu Autumn/Winter 2011

Moncler Gamme Bleu Autumn/Winter 2011

Moncler’s Gamme Blue runway is one of the better presentations in menswear season to season. To many it is a complete standout which remains very focused in the designer’s vision. The look is clear – when you view the collection, you understand it to be Thom Browne’s work based on his usual use of greys, but do expect more. Color – red and green for starters –  surrounds the collection through accents and at times trousers, hunting tops, and more. The sad pup above is just upset he didn’t get fitted. (gq)

Maison Martin Margiela Wood Billfold Wallet

We covered the Margiela wood money holder a month ago, but with Spring 2011 dropping, we look at their latest “wood work.” They’re billfold style this time around. The interior is leather lined like a traditional wallet but the outer shell is formed and bonded with wood fixtures to allow for it to have a bend. (porvocacao)

Ermenegildo Zegna Autumn/Winter 2011

Ermenegildo Zegna Autumn/Winter 2011

GQ delivers a look at the Ermenegildo Zenga collection for Autumn/Winter 2011. Their thoughts: “The technological tricks added to the collection, which hitched traditional 1940’s-era fabrics with ultra-modern, slimmed-down shapes. Tight trousers and razor-sharp topcoats in an exploded wool plaid kept things especially fresh. The new Zegna suit for Fall 2011 is sexier, with a body-hugging “hour-glass” jacket and bolder, more defined shoulders. ”

First Look | Uniforms for the Dedicated Spring 2011

Selectism - uniforms-dedicated-spring-2011-01

SL favourites Uniforms for the Dedicated have just sent over their latest collection and, as you’d expect, it’s a doozy. If you know UftD you should know what they do by now and that continues – no bad thing. It remains quirky enough to pique our interest but not so quirky it’s unwearable. And if you missed out the first time, that varsity of theirs makes a welcome return.

See the rest of the collection after the leap.

Burberry Garbadine Trench

Selectism - burberry-trench-coat-leather-sleeves

So Burberry have bucked trends and put their coats online (for a limited time only, they’ll disappear on the 23rd). We know, we know – the democratisation of fashion and all that. While we think any democratisation talk is nonsense (it’s not democratic if most people can’t afford it) it does say someone about the increased speed of fashion. That aside, doesn’t it look good? (Burberry)
