First Ever Photograph of a Human Being

Beau Colburn’s Thursday roundup.

01. Village Voice: Bob Dylan In NYC
“We’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan’s arrival in New York City with videos, artist tributes, and old Voice stories.” (villagevoice)

02. First Ever Photograph of a Human Being (above)
“This photograph of Boulevard du Temple in Paris was made in 1838 by Louis Daguerre, the brilliant guy that invented the daguerreotype process of photography. Aside from its distinction of being a super early photograph, it’s also the first photograph to ever include a human being. “ (petapixel)

03. How the Super Bowl Got Its Name: The Real Story
“There is no question that crediting Hunt (who passed way in December 2006) with coming up with the name “Super Bowl” is one of the event’s most cherished, and oft-repeated, traditions—and one that is immortalized in the Professional Football Hall of Fame, complete with a display of replica “super balls” in the Hall’s Lamar Hunt Super Bowl Gallery… But is it true?” (atlantic )

04. The Decemberists by Autumn de Wilde Exhibition Opening
“The Impossible Project gave Autumn 2,500 exposures of the last remaining stocks of the experimental chocolate, blue and sepia Polaroid peel apart films. She shadowed the band during the recording of their new album, intimately capturing thousands of precious moments on this distinctive film. Each box set will feature a one of a kind Polaroid from the experience.” (impossibleproject)

Oxford Chino Pants

Oxford Chino Pants

The Oxford store was established in 1978 in Sydney, Australia. “The brand successfully developed throughout the 1980s earning a reputation as an innovative, and sometimes ‘quirky’, alternative to many higher priced brands.” Today, the company has grown to more then 20 stores throughout Australia. They have recently launched a women’s collection and have continued to strive for excellent value for each collection. Their classic chino has a “superior fit.” Made of 100% cotton, the pants are only available in black and could be dressed up or down in any situation. A great company from our neighbors located in the southern hemisphere. Available at Oxford.

Ksubi ‘Beware, Wear” 1101 Collection Autumn/Winter 2011

27 January 2011, 21.00 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

Ksubi Men's Fall 2011

Ksubi looks back into their own history for inspiration found in the 1101 collection for Autumn 2011. Rather than falling into the trends found on USA shores, they continue to do their own shit – and doing it well. Here’s what they say: “Experimenting with differing tactile and visual elements, the idea of ‘merging’ by focusing on internal detailing from reversed fabrics to external seams and layering…The colour palette for the season draws from the elements. From ash to slate, smoke to jet, a sombre yet sophisticated palette is then lifted through moss, khaki and deep plum. Red is rusted and bloody in ‘beware, wear’ complimented by soft sand and fresh neutrals.”

“Jasper, Texas: The Community Photographs of Alonzo Jordan” Book

27 January 2011, 20.57 | Posted in Art, Books & Magazines | No comments »

jasper book 01 selectism Jasper, Texas: The Community Photographs of Alonzo Jordan Book

In concert with its current exhibition, Jasper, Texas: The Community Photographs of Alonzo Jordan, the International Center of Photography has released a comprehensive catalog of the former barber’s work. Contextual essays come from Alan B. Govenar, a superb folklorist with focus on Texas and its musical traditions. The photographs capture small town Jasper and its cultural and social milieu at mid-century. As such, the work becomes a telling document of the life lived by James Byrd, whose racially charged 1998 murder thrust Jasper into the National spotlight.

Available from ICP.

Burberry Prorsum Men’s Autumn/Winter 2011

burberry prorsum fall2011 1 Burberry Prorsum Mens Autumn/Winter 2011

The exceptional acceptance of the woodsman into more and more collection shows that we may have come to the top. What happens next – we hope – can only be a response to it. While the streets of Paris may not relay the heritage movement as strongly as say NYC or London, it is clear that the mixture remains. Burberry Prorsum for Autumn 2011 continues mixing the fashion with the heritage inspired pieces. It is probably not fair to use term but it is clear that inspiration and re-creation of the classic is happening here.

Illesteva Spring/Summer 2011 Sunglasses

Paz again. She’s just incredible. Tough to not put her up when she is wearing a pair of Illesteva’s Spring 2011 sunglasses. Not much more to say expect that they’re unisex so you’re girl or boy will be sharing pairs with you. The collection is drastic at times but we’re sure you’ll find something in there for you.

Kitsune Autumn/Winter 2011 “Brokeback Mountain”

Kitsune Autumn/Winter 2011 "Brokeback Mountain"

With a title like “Brokeback Mountain” for their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection, Kitsune may be playing fun on the exhausting workwear movement with a collection that actually offers impressive takes on the style. Do not fear though, the Kitsune collection does offer modern garments that fall slightly outside of this fold (as shown in the images above). Well done from the Parisan fashion/music powerhouse.
