Umit Benan “Investment Bankers” Autumn/Winter 2011

28 February 2011, 01.11 | Posted in Fashion | 2 comments »

Umit Benan Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 Collection - Investment Bankers

Even though we have already previewed the collection about six weeks ago, we have to revisit the topic once more, after having come across the above image. The Turkish designer keeps on impressing us with his sharp design aesthetics and presents for Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 a line that is entirely inspired by Investment Bankers in the 80s. The suit is very dominent in the new collection. The colors used in the line are simply beautiful and at times very unique. On the other hand the designer uses very classic colors and styles, yet manages to give each piece his very own look and twist. We love the collection and cannot wait to see it in stores later this year. It sure looks like Umit Benan continues to rise and it will be interesting to see how far he will go.

The full line follows after the jump.

Penguin 50th Anniversary Mini Modern Classics Box Set

The Penguin Modern Classics series is 50 years old this year (Penguin paperbacks have been in print for more than 76 years Penguin 50th Anniversary Mini Modern Classics Box Set). To celebrate this achievement, they’re releasing a “Mini Modern Classics Box Set.” “Each little book is a quick literary hit, a satisfying shot of storytelling. And though they don’t take long to read, they’ll stay with you long after you turn the final page.” A strong collection and great gift for anyone. Looks to be available in the U.K. only at the moment. (notcot)

For a further look at the 76 year history of Penguin paperbacks through covers, you can pick up the  Penguin by Design: A Cover Story 1935-2005 book Penguin 50th Anniversary Mini Modern Classics Box Set.

Ignoble Cora Classic Rucksack Backpack

Ignoble Cora Classic Rucksack Backpack

A straight up rucksack backpack/rucksack from Ignoble. You can see from the photos that this is a black/black/black backpack, slightly long and ready to pack. We could stop right there and add that it is produced in the U.S.A. at a small-run military supplier. “The CORA Classic Rucksack is constructed from wear resistant 400D high density nylon, with YKK branded nylon zipper closures and heavy duty nylon webbing” I can stop right there. A very solid backpack for the man looking for the essentials.

Video | Mercedes-Benz “How to Build a Sports Car”

NatGeo does it right. “Go inside Mercedes’ largest German factory to see what it takes to build the 563-horsepower Mercedes SLS. Computers control everything in a Mercedes with more than a mile of wiring in each car, but to create the fastest Mercedes to date… The spiritual successor of the original 1950s Mercedes 300 S-L, the $183,000 2010 SLS blends modern engineering with classic Mercedes design.”

Essential Represses from Burial Mix

01. Essential Represses from Burial Mix (above)

Back in print. “Highlights are pretty much impossible to pick because the whole label is just so damn precious, but in amongst these records you’ll finds tracks like “King In My Empire”, “Mash Down Babylon”, and “Jah Rule”, foundational productions that have accompanied us for too many years to remember – and still sounding as good as the day they were made.” #beyondessential (boomkat)

02. Trax back catalogue remastered and available digitally

“The majority of legendary Chicago dance label Trax’s back catalog has been remastered and made digitally available. A hugely important part of dance music history, the label’s influence spreads way beyond Chicago, their discography featuring countless legendary cuts from Marshall Jefferson, DJ Pierre, Adonis, Frankie Knuckles and more.

For those with even half an interest in dance music’s current rediscovery of acid house (as seen through Blawan, Boddika et al), this stuff is essential, and now available at Boomkat, Juno and the other digital retailers you’d expect.” (factmag)

03. Epilepsy Organization Gets Kanye Vid Off YouTube

“After warning folks with photosensitive epilepsy not to watch the clip and then issuing a press release about the ‘extensive use of flashing imagery’ in Kanye West’s ‘All Of The Lights’ video, Epilepsy Action announced today that the Enter The Void homage has been removed from YouTube. It’s unclear who took it down. (Gaspar Noé?) As Epilepsy Action explains…” (stereogum)

04. Stanley Donwood discusses the artwork for “The King Of Limbs”

“It’s very much about natural forms. I’d heard something about the northern European imagination, in the sense of all our fairy stories and mythical creatures. They all come from the woods – Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel & Gretel…we’ve got all these stories and myths. Me and Thom were working on these ideas of strange, multi-limbed creatures that are neither malevolent or benevolent, they’re simply there, part of the living spirit of the forest. That’s come through into all of the work.” (creativereview)

Conde Nast Worldwide Newsstand in London

GW turned me onto this one a while ago. Took a while to post but worth a look as it highlights that print may not be dead. I’m willing to bet it has a long life to come. Sure this is a Conde Nast only affair (they include their in-house books as well) but a good sign for me. (gquk)

Check it out at Vogue House on St. George’s Street. Now open.

Seagull 1963 Chronograph Watch

Seagull 1963 Chronograph Watch

Mr. Williams on ACL discusses some Chinese heritage in the form of this chronograph from Seagull. “While out in Vegas I was chatting with a designer friend and his watch happened to catch my eye. It was pretty classic looking, and upon further inspection, I noticed a red star and a few Chinese characters on its face. Intrigued, I needed to know more and inquired as to it. “It’s a reproduction Chinese pilot’s watch from the ’60s.” my friend said. I took a few photos and when I got home did a little investigating on the internets. Sure enough the watch is called the Seagull 1963 and it has been recently reissued.”

Another new model from Generic Surplus for Spring 2011. The Wharf is a new take on the deck shoe worn by the old-time sailor uniforms. We love the mid-top silhouette this season and this one is perfect for both the streets and deck.
