Jil Sander ‘Memphis 717′ Derby Shoe

22 March 2011, 13.59 | Posted in Shoes | 1 comment »

Selectism - jil-sander-derby-shoe-01

Ever looked down at your feet and thought, ‘yeah, these are great but what if they we’re a shocking shade of blue’? We know we have. Although, in all seriousness, a little fun for your feet never hurt anyone. And in a bizarre way, these could be worn in a few years because they’re so odd looking they’re never truly ‘on trend’. Just don’t wear them to a fashion week next season unless you want to be sneered at by street style photographers. (Oki-Ni)

Barker ‘Abingdon’ Oxford Shoe

Selectism - barker-oxford-shoe-01

We hate to be the ones to throw salt on every emerging trend, but we’ve never been fans of folks who adopt entire outfits. What makes that different from a costume? Random gripes aside, this shoe could easily be worn within that whole Italian style that everyone’s organically grown to love at the exact same time. This shoe’s so sharp, we’re scared we might get cut. (Edwards)

01. Art and the Early Photographic Album

“One of the most prized categories of early photography was the reproduction of artworks, a role in which photographs largely replaced engravings in book imagery during the mid-19th century. Photographs of paintings, sculptures, and other works were compiled in albums, ranging from surveys of museum collections and catalogues of works by single artists to illustrated travel guides and archaeological reports. While such albums have often been valued for documentary purposes, their broader role in the institutional development of art has, until now, been overlooked. The first book on the subject, this collection of twelve essays explores topics such as how the acclaim of artists like Rubens grew because their paintings reproduced so well in photographs, how Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel frescoes were given a new public identity by the photographer’s choice of striking details never explored in traditional prints, and other important ways in which photographically illustrated publications influenced the experience and the history of art.” (YUP).

02. Salon Du Fromage by Kotaro Horiuchi Architecture

“At a cheese store in the heart of Paris, visitors are confronted by a stark juxtaposition; while 47 Rue de Richelieu features a historic 18th-century exterior, on the inside awaits a minimalistic, monotone and modern shop design.” (Frame).

03. Lori Zimmer Porsche Now Taking Pre-Orders for 918 Spyder Hybrid Super Car Priced at $845,000 (Above)

“We whet the appetites of sports car enthusiasts everywhere when we first mentioned Porsche’s Spyder 918, but now they can really start salivating because the super fast  hybrid sports car is finally available for pre-order! The Porsche supercar will join the ranks of  the Artega, the Volvo V60 and the Tesla Roadster that have been making waves recently but it won’t be shipping until late 2013. Which gives plenty of time for the very limited potential buyers to save up for the $845,000 price tag!” (Inhabitat).

04. VITALI KLITSCHKO IS NOW LOOKING INVINCIBLE, by Pavel Yakovlev

“Vitali Klitschko retained his WBC heavyweight championship yesterday, stopping Odlanier Solis in the first round. The challenger was hurt and knocked down by a single right to the temple. Although Solis arose, he wobbled helplessly while clutching the ropes to maintain his balance. Referee Guadalupe Garcia waived the contest off at 3:00 of the round.” (East Side).

How Formichetti Got Rick Genest to Model in Mugler

How Formichetti Got Rick Genest to Model in Mugler

HINT talks with Nicola Formichetti about the inclusion of Montreal’s Rick Genest (aka Zombie Boy) into the Mugler campaign for Autumn 2011. Maxime from Sang Bleu made the contact and Facebook brought it all together. But what next? In Formichetti’s words: “I called my friend Mariano [Vivanco, photographer] and my manager. We got together the first week after the holidays as I was about to leave for Paris to work on the last bit of the collection. I remember thinking I have to do this, I just have a gut feeling, I have to work with this guy. Everyone said he’s a freak, why would I want to do that to a luxury brand? Anyway, I didn’t listen to anyone and just went. I brought some clothes, a couple of suits, and I actually made lots of clothes the night before I left New York. I had pieces sent from Paris and was just making stuff in my house, and then took everything to Montreal and we did a photo shoot and video. The photos are the ones we just launched as a visual campaign.”

Viktor & Rolf Leather Loafer in Black

Viktor & Rolf Black Patent Leather Loafer

Some more jute soles… this time from the Viktor & Rolf house. This patent black leather loafer is accented with a jute mid-sole. While it may not work for all, it is unique to a small crowd. I personally like it. Almost adds a casual element to the form. Italo-made, of course. Fwd has them.

Project X British Military “Stealth” Rolexes

Project X British Military "Stealth" Rolexes

Have to say these custom Rolexes work for me. London’s Project  X Designs delivers some “sub” takes on the Rolex Submariner models. Three Submariners mods are part of the series: the Mk III, Mk IV, and Mk V. “The Mk III pays homage to the Submariner worn by Sean Connery in the 1950s Bond movies; the Bond character was originally a former SBS commando.” The Mk IV comes in on the darker end of the scale with a black carbon casing and a blacked out face, while the Mk V was created for a “subtle and sophisticated contrast to the Submariner models.. the case is satin finished before being treated with a hard-wearing black DLC.” (highsnob/luxist)
