Beau Colburn special for this Thursday…
01. St. Patrick’s Day for the Family: How To Avoid PG-13 Drinking Songs and Worse
“Look, the pubs are no place for kids, something many of us need to be reminded of as St. Patrick’s Day approaches. It’s not solely because of the potential for deformity or because the dimly lit, alcohol-soaked bedlam in your typical pub — particularly on March 17 — will likely assault a kid’s delicate senses. It’s also not because children are terrible at executing a proper pint run, as their tiny hands allow them to carry only one glass at a time from the bar to your thirsty table. And it’s certainly not because the kitchen help won’t let you use the microwave out back to heat up formula.” (sfweekly)
02. NBA Referee Sues Sportswriter Over ‘Defamatory’ Tweet
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a prospective condo tenant, Courtney Love or a sportswriter: Be careful what you tweet, or you might get sued. In an unprecedented legal move in the sporting world, veteran NBA referee Bill Spooner has sued Associated Press sportswriter Jon Krawczynski for defamation, after the Minnesota Timberwolves beat writer tweeted during a Jan. 24 game that Spooner was calling fouls to make up for bad calls.” (wired)
03. The Flight of the AirJelly (above)
“The design of the AirJelly’s tentacles was derived from the functional anatomy of a fish’s fin. Each tentacle’s geometric structure bends in the direction of the applied force to produce peristaltic motion — a wave of contraction preceded by a wave of relaxation propagates in a wave down the tentacle, propelling the AirJelly forward.” (talkingscience)
04. AeroPress coffeemakers brew loyal fans
“As far as coffee brewing devices go, the AeroPress isn’t exactly sexy. It lacks the elegance of, say, a Japanese ceramic cone dripper or the classic Chemex glass carafe. So who would have imagined that two tubes of clear copolyester plastic fitted with a gawky black plunger could attract a cult following of coffee lovers from here to Oslo?” (latimes)
