Barker Nairn Shoe

Selectism - barker-nairn-shoe

While Spring is close, it’s not exactly here yet. Which means we still have to be prepared for any random downpours, a good dainite sole is a wise choice. While we’re fully behind the fake trainer revival, we like our shoes as well. In fact, we’ve never understood the whole ‘to like one thing you have to hate the other’ mentality that’s rife in fashion. Everything in moderation. (Herring Shoes)

Sunspel Salvage Stripe Polo Shirt

Selectism - sunspel-salvage-stripe-shirt-01

We weren’t that crazy about the majority of the salvage stripe collection, but this we like. It’s a little less abrasive than than the other colour combinations and it’s still got all the Sunspellian things we like – Egyptian cotton, made in England – all those things you can bore people with when they say ‘nice shirt, where’d you get it from?’ (Sunspel)

Junya Watanabe for Le Laboureur Wax Jacket

What’s that, You want some affordable Junya Watanabe? here you go. We’ve been trying to post these for a while now but they appear to sell out quicker than most stores can get them in. Goodhood just took stock of some and, while they’ve already sold out in large, they have other sizes. Just don’t be surprised if they’re gone by this evening. You’ve been warned. (Goodhood)

Selectism - eye-on-springfield

01. Eye on Springfield (pictured)

“My new film is a mix of action and comedy. It’s called “McBain: Let’s Get Silly”. The film is just me in front of a brick wall for an hour and a half. It cost $80 million.” (Eye on Springfield)

02. Musician Smiley Culture dies during police raid on Surrey home

“The police watchdog is investigating the death of the British reggae star Smiley Culture during a Metropolitan police raid.

The 48-year-old singer and MC, whose real name was David Emmanuel, died on Tuesday from a stab wound sustained as officers visited his house in Warlingham, Surrey to make an arrest.” (Guardian)

03. How we say thanks

“Our industry can seem pretty negative.

There are many reasons for this. There is subjectivity in our work. Big egos and temperamental personalities flourish in the arts. Criticism comes with the job, too. It helps us to evaluate honestly, progress and move forward. But, from the outside looking in, one might think that we are a pretty catty group that doesn’t get along.

Well, there are moments that punch through the veil, too.” (idsgn)

04. for japan

“My journey began Wednesday when I left Silverlake for Tokyo on a plain sunny LA morning. I’d packed haphazardly at best (five pairs of shoes? all shorts? my biggest furry coat on the plane? sure..) and was feeling a little delirious and a lot carefree, making Colin stop for my favorite coffee and orange juice so I could leave with a taste of home even though he insisted I needed the international-required 2 hours to check in. It ended with an early flight back from an airport lined with people on blankets by jam-packed ticketing counters and Next LA miraculously having succeeded in finding that one way ticket home.” (Fashion Toast)

Patrick Grant’s E.Tautz Archive

Selectism - e-tautz-archive-01

We fear some people will be fatigued by the E. Tautz press juggernaught over the last few months, but Oki-Ni have a nice little feature on Patrick Grant’s archive of E.Tautz inspiration. Unsurprisingly, it includes a fair amount of vintage E.Tautz, but there are a few other pieces (such as a US Naval Peacoat) in there as well.

See the feature here.

Selectism - Neverland-lost-01

Here’s a book that passed us by when it first came out. Neverland Lost Neverland Lost is Henry Leutwyler’s book about a raft of Michael Jackson artifacts removed from his Neverland ranch. The usual suspects all show up in the book – the gloves and all that – but it’s still fascinating to see up close.

The book is available from Steidl and Amazon Neverland Lost.

The history of the wah wah pedal. This is excellent. “‘Cry Baby: The Pedal That Rocks The World’ tells the story of the wah wah effect pedal, from its invention in 1966 to the present day. Musicians, engineers, and historians discuss the impact of the pedal on popular music and demonstrate the various ways it has been used, as well as how its evolution has improved the ability of artists to express themselves musically.”
