Transparent Table

Selectism - transparent-table-01

We’re simpletons at heart. Which means when we see things like a transparent table, we get all excited (within reason of course, it’s still just a table). Made by Japanese design studio Nendo, we could do with one in our home. (Fubiz)

Curated turns us onto this:

A+A Cooren Design is showing a number of novelties at Milano Design Week. Today, we’re highlighting the Yabané drawers . Inspired by a traditional Japanese graphic pattern, Yabané (arrow in Japanese) is a drawer that opens in two directions. It can easily be used in the middle of a room as a divider of space.

All A+A Cooren Design products are being shown at Nouvelle Vague exhibition, Centre culturel français, Corso Magenta 63.”

Assembly New York Backpack

Selectism - assembly-backpack-01

We think this might technically be a women’s backpack, but let’s be honest – who cares? A backpack is a backpack. And if you’re too insecure to wear that might’ve been made for a woman then you’re better off going to one of those sites that tell you how to be a man (who knew manhood came with an instruction guide?). We’ll be rocking our backpacks with pride. (Assembly)

Three Over One Short Sleeved Sweatshirt

Selectism - three-over-one-short-sleeved-sweatshirt-01

A perennial summer contender, the short sleeved sweatshirt is back again and this is the time we think it’s gonna break through the barrier. The colour might be a little off putting to some folks, but just call it washed red instead of pink and you’ll be fine. (ASOS)

Meg Company Woven Dress Shoe

Selectism - meg-company-woven-shoe-01

Woven shoes can be a bit hit or miss but we’re fans of this one. As far as summer shoes go, they’ll be a great addition to the summer rotation if you can ‘pull them off’. Sorry for using that phrase, we’ll go sit in a corner now. (Garbstore)

Video | ‘Repton Boxing Club’

YouTube Preview Image

Fantastic Man contributor Alistair McLellan has teamed up with Sunspel to create this short documentary on some boxers from the Repton boxing club. Watch it to see them talk about boxing, skip rope and have a chat in a cafe. Or, failing that, watch it to see some Sunspel models walking around in their underwear.

Buzz Rickson White Chambray Shirt

Selectism - buzz-rickson-white-chambray-shirt-01

This season, a plain white shirt can officially count as a curveball (the world’s gone mad, etc etc). But this is a chambray, so there’s a bit of a twist there, right? If nothing else, you can always throw paint on it if you feel it’s missing some colour. (Mr Mudd & Mr Gold)

01. The Ultimate NYC Coffee Glossary, a Decoder for Beginners

“Guess what New York: there’s finally great coffee in this city, and it’s getting better every day. If you don’t want to look like a dope around your espresso-snob friends, here’s a handy guide to everything you need to know about New York coffee, in glossary form.” (Eater).

02. Seth Price’s Riff on New Jack Swing

“If Robert Smithson saw the world as a museum, artists of Seth Price’s generation see the “www” as theirs. For them, the gallery can be anything: they project a film and play music in a gallery, so the question of where in that jumble of everything they want to make their work is a difficult one. The Web is both a cabinet of curiosities and a studio where viewers are invited in to see their latest endeavors.” (MOMA).

03. The Myth of Classlessness in Apple’s “Get a Mac” Campaign

“Perhaps pulling a page from the Seinfeld playbook, Apple decided to end the four-year run of its now iconic “Get a Mac” television and Internet campaign in May 2010 while still on top of the advertising world. That same month, AdWeek named the campaign the best of the 2000s, and in October Ad Age crowned Apple its “Marketer of the Decade.” The latest installment in a celebrated line of advertising that stretches as far back as 1984 (literally), “Get a Mac” is also largely a departure from the over-the-top production, flashy aesthetics, and A-list celebrities of previous Apple campaigns. Two guys, a white backdrop, a meandering jingle, and a punch line are all it usually took for these ads to pitch Mac as…well…the thing to be.” (Flowtv).

04. NYC Tattoo Convention May 13-15, 2011

“My favorite tattoo convention is fast approaching, and I wanted to give y’all a heads up to mark your calendars: May 13-15, at the historic Roseland Ballroom in the heart of Times Square, the NYC Tattoo Convention takes over for its 14th year, featuring a finely curated roster of international artists, including legends like Jack Rudy, Paul Booth, Shanghai Kate Hellenbrand, Bill & Junii Salmon and many other greats.” (Needles and Sins).

Kenzo Minami + ACE Hotel Japan Relief Fundraiser T-shirt

Kenzo Minami + ACE Hotel Japan Relief Fundraiser T-shirt

Kenzo Minami and the ACE Hotel team up on this special edition t-shirt for Japan earthquake and tsunami relief. The charity of their choice being the Real Medicine Foundation. Here are Mr. Minami’s thoughts on the design:

“It is about ‘Re:’ in terms of ‘Reply’ – our reply to the tsunami and our response to Japan (which is this charity itself and collectively to help the world and give on a larger scale). Also, Japan will need a lot of ‘Re____’ from now on: ‘Rebuild,’ ‘Restart,’ ‘Reboot,’ ‘Recharge’ and more.”

Available online now through the ACE Hotel Shop and select Rudy’s Barbershop locations.

Julius Spring/Summer 2011 Men's Collection

Japan’s Honeyee Magazine profiles the Spring/Summer 2011 collection from Julius through a beautiful photo essay. A bit military mixed in with the layering and drapery that has dominated the modern movement. Worth a walk through.
