03. Big Freedia: Do Azz I Say (Above)

Before that, Freedia (born Freddie Ross) and I last spoke in the gym of Behrman Elementary on the West Bank, where she was taping up streamers for a dance. Freedia remains active as a designer for hire and as a volunteer in New Orleans public schools, but her recent busy touring schedule has forced her to quit teaching choir. A whole new door of national recognition was just then beginning to open for Freedia, and for New Orleans bounce rap.” (Off Beat).

04. Tattoos in the LGBT Community

“Late Friday night, New York became the largest state to legalize same-sex marriage, making this weekend’s NYC Pride celebrations fiercer than ever. Inspired by it all, I’ve been looking into the history of tattooing within the LGBT community but not finding a significant amount of information, especially considering the prominence of body art in the community. The NYT wrote about it yesterday and Boing Boing picked it up today… Rachel Shteir’s The Steal: A Cultural History of Shoplifting looks to be a fascinating study into what some consider a to be an addiction or a misunderstood behavior in children. It clearly is much more than that. The key line from the publisher’s note say it all: “Just as experts can’t agree on why people shoplift, they can’t agree on how to stop it.”

“The Steal begins when shoplifting entered the modern record as urbanization and consumerism made London into Europe’s busiest mercantile capital. Crossing the channel to nineteenth-century Paris, Shteir tracks the rise of the department store and the pathologizing of shoplifting as kleptomania. In 1960s America, shoplifting becomes a symbol of resistance when the publication of Abbie Hoffman’s Steal This Book popularizes shoplifting as an antiestablishment act. Some contemporary analysts see our current epidemic as a response to a culture of hyper-consumerism; others question whether its upticks can be tied to economic downturns at all. Few provide convincing theories about why it goes up or down.”

And finishing off our coverage for the day is Perfecto by Schott. Despite the fact that Perfecto’s relatively new, we all know what they stand for – coats so good you’ll do a jig for them. I just hope it can hold my pooch.

Leffe continued their search for stories of passion, spirit, and living, as part of their search for true men of character by inviting more than 250 men with inspiring stories to take part in their “Craft of Character” mission. Five men were chose, each of whom “best embodied the rich taste of Leffe” with their unique insight and social experiences. The character that each of these men bring to the table should inspire us all to continually craft our own characters.

Comedian, Adam, Strauss (above) brings us his tale of spontaneous acceptance through new friends.
