"Vintage Lingerie: Historical Patterns and Techniques" Book

A interesting book recommend for this Sunday. For those interested in the historical side of lingere pattern making, may we recommend Jill Salen’s latest work, Vintage Lingerie: Historical Patterns and Techniques Vintage Lingerie: Historical Patterns and Techniques Book. Consider it a reference book that should sit on the shelf next to the DPM camo book (not really pattern making, but patterns nonetheless). From the publisher:

From 1920s French knickers to 1950s pin-up brassieres, these fabulous vintage pieces chart the progression of lingerie over the last 120 years. The book covers a range of fascinating garments, including 1890s corsets, 1940s garter belts and basques, 1950s New Look girdles, brassieres, knickers and much more. The book Vintage Lingerie: Historical Patterns and Techniques Book includes 30 fully annotated working patterns alongside drawings, photographs and practical advice on any feature or alteration necessary for making up the garments. For any costume designer working on stage or screen, the historically accurate patterns are an essential for capturing the classic shapes of any period.”

Another Look | Lucky Peach Issue #1

It’s been some time since we previewed David Chang’s new magazine, Lucky Peach, under the McSweeny’s flag. Issue one is  now available online Another Look | Lucky Peach Issue #1 and at better magazine/bookshops nationwide.

As mentioned, “The James Beard Award winning chef has partnered with writer Peter Meehan, and Zero Point Zero Production (who make Anthony Bourdain’s TV show) on the venture…” What you find inside is a strong mix of travelogues, art, photography, and rants “in a full-color, meticulously designed format. Recipes will defy the tired ingredients-and-numbered-steps formula. They’ll be laid out sensibly, inspired by the thought process that went into developing them.”  Amazon Another Look | Lucky Peach Issue #1 has it.

Ostankino TV Tower: Moscow Views

01. Ostankino TV Tower: Moscow Views (above)

“Last time we told you about Ostankino TV tower. Today we’ll climb the Tower, a free-standing television and radio tower in Moscow, to enjoy bird’s-eye view of the city of Moscow. Standing 540 meters (1,770 ft) tall, Ostankino is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers, currently the tallest in Europe and 3rd tallest in the world.” (englishrussia)

02. eBay watch: 1950s midcentury Grundig radiogram

“Yes, there are a number of old audio systems on eBay right now, but I’ll wager there’s nothing else like this Grundig radiogram…In terms of design alone, it’s a stunning piece of furniture. Out of the 1950s and offering up some cool midcentury style, it looks immaculate, despite pushing 60 years old. Check out the plethora of images on the site to see it close up – we can hardly see a mark.” (retrotogo)

03. The Infinity Burial Project

“The Infinity Burial Project founded by Jae Rhim Lee, proposes alternatives for the postmortem body that promote and facilitate an individual engagement with the process of decomposition.  The Project features the development of a unique strain of mushroom that decomposes and remediates toxins in human tissue, the development of a decomposition ‘kit’, burial suits embedded with decomposition activators, and a membership society devoted to the promotion of death awareness and acceptance and the practice of decompiculture (the cultivation of decomposing organisms).” (Beautiful Decay).

04. Dinner Tonight: BLT, Animal-Style

“I’ve made Kenji’s astonishing replica of In-N-Out’s Double-Double, Animal-Style so many times now that I can almost make it in my sleep. Part of the allure is how the toppings enhance every bite. The tangy sauce perfectly plays off the fresh vegetables, crisp pickles, and deeply caramelized onions. The combination of ingredients is so good that I’ve even created patty-less versions of the dish when I’ve run out ground beef.” (Serious Eats).
