Aesop Opens Another Shop in Paris

This one has hit the inbox hard today. Even friends with no association to the industry have reminded me of the new Aesop shop in Paris’ Marais area. The new shop, with it’s minimal finishing and decor is a sight to be seen. More than 400 dishes adorn the walls of the shop; each is used to “stand” bottles and jars of Aesop’s collection of skin, hair and body products. Find them at 64 rue Vieille du Temple.

1939 Pontiac Ghost Car

Selectism - ghost-car-01

Can this writer admit that he’s just not that into cars? But even he has to admit that this is a pretty amazing vehicle. Made in 1939, the plexiglass outer was a collaboration between General Motors and Rohm & Haas. Completely see through, it’s been owned by one family since the ’80s and has only clocked up 98 miles since then. Presumably it was only brought out when the family felt they needed to stunt like their daddy. (Found By James)

Yatzer Visits Dieter Rams at Home

Yatzer Visits Dieter Rams at Home

Our friends at Yatzer give a splendid tour and story on the Frankfurt home or designer Dieter Rams. On the heels of his monograph book Yatzer Visits Dieter Rams at Home release and exhibition, the Yazter profile is a strong read.

“Having designed his own home, from the bespoke white tiles with dark grey grouting, made for the Vitsœ showroom in Frankfurt at the same time to match perfectly to the dimensions of his 50-year-old shelving system to fixtures for his tools in the downstairs workshop‚ a room that saw many secret product development when it was even too secretive to be worked on at the Braun factory, Rams is a perfectionist to a degree that most of us would not even comprehend. Only a few items have made it in to his home that have not been under the microscopic view of his eye before heading to mass-production.”

Lists: To-dos, Illustrated Inventories, Collected Thoughts, and Other Artists’ Enumerations

Selectism - To dos, Illustrated Inventories, Collected Thoughts, and Other Artists Enumerations

Curated lets us know about this exhibition:

“On view at The Morgan Library through October 2, 2011, Lists takes a humorous look at a ubiquitous part of our daily lives.

From the weekly shopping list to the Ten Commandments, our lives are full of lists—some dashed off quickly, others beautifully illustrated, all providing insight into the personalities and habits of their makers. The exhibition celebrates this most common form of documentation by presenting an array of lists made by a broad range of artists, from Pablo Picasso and Alexander Calder to H. L. Mencken, Eero Saarinen, Elaine de Kooning, and Lee Krasner. With examples such as Picasso’s picks for the great artists of his age (Gris, Léger, etc.), H. L. Mencken’s autobiographical facts (“I never have a head-ache from drink”), and Robert Smithson’s collection of quotations about spirals, the items on view are intriguing, revealing, humorous, and poignant.”

Martin Margiela Leather Bag

Selectism - martin-margiela-tote-bag-01

We’re always up for a good leather bag especially when it’s by our pound for pound favourite designer/design team. In fact, our only issue is the price tag – it’s enough to make us seriously consider getting a rich girlfriend, casually walking to a store and then ‘forgetting’ our credit cards. Wonder if that’d work? (Aloha Rag)

Linda Farrow for Raf by Raf Simons Sunglasses

Selectism - linda-farrow-raf-by-raf-simons-sunglasses-01

All nonsense aside, the main reason we like sunglasses is because (a) they’ll make us look good and (b) we get to admire all the great sights that summer brings us without looking like you’re staring. Of course you can be caught if you stare in an overly leech-like manner but aside from that you’re merely complimenting the other person’s attractiveness. And hey, if they notice you in a good way – a guarantee if your glasses are this nice and you’re not hideous to look at – it’s the perfect opportunity to go over and talk to them. And yes, this topic is more important than talking about the design of the glasses. (Aplace)
