 Afterzine #2

Afterzine is the brainchild of Vanity Fair editor Hamish Robertson, a biannual art and culture magazine whose unique tone has garnered much interest as of late. The magazine relies on a dynamic medley of contributors working around a set theme, each producing work independently that’s then carefully bound together to form a free-flowing, multi-layered publication. Issue 2, printed in a limited run of 1,000 copies, originally examined the theme coincidence, to then organically shift its focus to “an exploration of the city of Los Angeles.”

Contributors include Bobby Solomon, Zooey Deschanel and Miranda July amongst several others.

midori pencils Midori Pencils

Enjoying a quality piece of stationary is nothing to be ashamed of. Taking your shiny new pencil case out of your shiny new backpack was one of the only things that made the first day back at school bearable. Perhaps that’s what makes ‘luxury writing instruments’ so appealing to adults. Japanese Company Midori have been doing their bit to cheer up our otherwise dull desks since the 1950s. Their Brass bullet pencil is easy on the eye and writes like a dream. The Journal Shop has them.

Nigel Cabourn Men's Coastal Command Sheepskin Jacket

Nigel Cabourn has once again fashioned something rather special with grand historical significance, this time with his reinterpretation of a WW1 classic – the coastal commander’s sheepskin jacket.  The jacket has been produced in tastefully distressed leather featuring a hand-painted hood and 100% sheepskin inner, the later providing prime insulation as we collectively flirt with the idea of autumnal attire.  Available at LN-CC.

Post O’alls Calico Vest

Post O'alls Calico Vest

Post o’alls know their way around a vest, the Traveler’s spot on design and utilitarian feel making it a bit of a classic. This particular example is hard to argue with, ‘quilted indigo calico fabric’ are a collection of words that just seem to work together. If you’re unfortunate enough to find yourself in the middle of a summer that refuses to make up its mind this sleeveless number might just come in handy. Bureaubelfast has them.

Aloha Rag Paneled Jacket

15 August 2011, 11.00 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

Aloha Rag Paneled Jacket
Aloha Rag’s Paneled Jacket arrives as one of the standout pieces from their recently unveiled Autumn/Winter 2011 collection. The jacket features a base canvas of soft grey tweed, skillfully paired with tan corduroy panels found on the inner sleeves. The panels provide a charming modernist accent to an otherwise traditionally cut jacket, indicative of AR’s mission to create classically styled garments that benefit from the odd contemporary twist.

In addition to those panels, a duo of tan leather football buttons sit on the face of the jacket with four securing each cuff, all of which fix on leather-bound buttonholes nodding toward AR’s appreciation of luxury and fine detailing. -jr

Glenn Kitson for Number Six

Glenn Kitson for Number Six

East London retailer Number Six recently teamed with stylist Glenn Kitson (of The Rig Out) to release a lookbook showcasing a selection of the store’s Autumn/Winter apparel. Labels featured include the likes of Ben Sherman Modern Classics, Ralph Lauren, Adidas and relative newcomers to London’s menswear scene, Utile.

Glenn’s overview of the project: “Basically, I wanted to focus on classic working class style, using the early 80s as an influence. There are massive parallels at the moment with the early part of the 1980s, economically, socially and politically. It was also a period of amazing creativity amongst Britain’s youth in style and music. Never since that era has the quote ‘clean living under difficult circumstances’ seemed so apt.”
