44RN 144#47 Chainring

18 September 2011, 22.36 | Posted in bike | No comments »

44rn chainring aaron panone somerville 03 44RN 144#47 Chainring

This is a bit of a locally made story for those looking to keep their bicycles as locally “produced” as possible – in this case in the United States. When it comes to bike building, it is tough to get almost every part made or fabricated in the USA. I attempted to do so myself in 2009. You can get close… very close in fact. Somerville’s 44RN looks to bring it a bit closer with his 144#47 chainring, available now.

Aaron Panone, our food columnist, is also head of the one-man 44RN operation. He also happens to be an engineer who enjoys nothing more than to work special make-ups, especially bicycle parts, for those who care about the production behind their components. You can get the full story over on his personal site. The important notes are that the bolt circle sites at 144mm and each chainring has 47teeth made for ⅛ chains. 50 total units in black and polished. Enjoy.

companyofwe Spring/Summer 2012

companyofwe is back after a short  directional reshuffle. Creative director, Jay Samonte, discusses the line’s move to bring more of their fabrication back stateside – a move that does afford many domestic designs the ability to bring front line focus to their samples. The line will also introduce a new women’s collection soon as well as cc:me, their new invitation only offering for select clients the ability to pre-order a short run of their Spring 2012 for early delivery.

01. Henry’s Essential Listening

“Hello Rhinofy & Spotify subscribers! I am going to make you play lists that I hope you will really dig. Stay tuned! – Henry This week’s Essential Listening – Great Post Punk” (rhino)

02. Nick Lowe On World Cafe

“English singer-songwriter Nick Lowe’s reputation often precedes him. He wrote hits “So It Goes,” “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace, Love, and Understanding?” and “Cruel to Be Kind,” produced Elvis Costello’s legendary first five albums, collaborated extensively with his wife’s stepfather Johnny Cash and nurtured a well-respected solo career. Lowe is a consistently significant figure in country, rock, punk and new wave, and has left his signature on a range of records in his wake of forty years in the business.” (npr)

03. Barn Owl – Turiya

“The Reason(s) We Can’t Stop Listening: While Evan Caminiti and Jon Porras seem to release a new solo record every couple months—or in some cases, every couple weeks—Barn Owl’s latest full-length may be their finest hour yet. With their windswept sound now rounded out by organ drones, ungodly gongs, death march drums and mangled tape manipulations, the Bay Area duo’s arrived at a wildly expressive sound that can easily switch between charred power chords (the Sunn O)))-like “The Darkest Night Since 1683″) and majestic flourishes of moonlit melodies and feedback (“Light Echoes”). Definitely a contender for our year-end charts.” (self-titled)

OHW? Footwear

Here’s a new footwear line with an interesting spin on their story. Two footwear designers, over dinner in China, decide to start a new footwear line which will set them apart from the market with the idea of “guarantee[ing] original design, product quality and brand integrity.” The first goal is a difficult one, we must add. How many times have you walked into a footwear shop and noted incredible similarities (and for good reason). Well, OHW? (pronounced “who”) believe they can achieve all of this. They happen to own the factory…

What you will see in the OHW? offering for Spring/Summer 2012 are casual looks in silhouettes that will be familiar to you. They offer seven styles to start with. Take a look and let us know what you think…
