Selectism | Around The Web

Selectism - STREETFSN

01.  Richard Hamilton, the original pop artist, dies at 89

“Richard Hamilton, the most influential British artist of the 20th century, has died aged 89.

In his long, productive life he created the most important and enduring works of any British modern painter.” (Guardian‘)

02. R.I.P. DJ Mehdi

” MTV reports that Mehdi was killed at his home in Paris, when the roof collapsed while he was celebrating his birthday with friends. This has not yet been confirmed.

FACT reports and it has been confirmed that French producer DJ Mehdi has passed away. Mehdi, full name Mehdi Favéris-Essadi, was a main member of the French electro collective Ed Banger, and had been recently collaborating with fellow producer Riton as Carte Blanche.” (Pitchfork)

03. NY Fashion Week #1 (Pictured)

The circus begins again. (Street FSN)

04. Another fight, still no test for V. Klitschko

“If I’m ever asked to name my top 10 fighters of all time, Vitali Klitschko won’t come close to making the cut.

No disrespect, but the elder of the two Ukrainian brothers, who have had the heavyweight division on lockdown for what seems like an eternity, is dull, technically awful and has zero charisma.

But, at age 40, he has perfected a great habit that no one can break: He keeps winning fights.” (ESPN)

Henry Wessel’s ‘Waikiki’ Book

Selectism - henry-wessel-waikiki-01

Capturing one of Honolulu’s most famous neighbourhoods, Waikiki Henry Wessels Waikiki Book is the photography book by Henry Wessel. The blurb says it ‘explores the contradictions of Waikiki – concrete hotels invading pristine beaches, culture encroaching on nature.’ We’d like to agree with that – although we do just like the pretty pictures. Look for its influence when the next round of spring lookbooks appear. Out on Steidl. Available from Amazon Henry Wessels Waikiki Book.

“Handcrafted Modern” Book

"Handcrafted Modern" Book

No, this isn’t about a new heritage brand (although we’re a week away from a brand being called that). We’re actually talking about this book Handcrafted Modern Book, which takes a look at mid-century interiors. Photographed by Leslie Williamson, it includes the works of Russel Wright, George Nakashima and Charles & Ray Eames. And it’s also a great way to convince a partner that getting an incredibly expensive sofa is worth the outlay. (Neest)

Available from Amazon Handcrafted Modern Book.

Nicholas K Spring/Summer 2012 Runway

Nicholas K Spring 2012 has designers’ Nicholas Kunz and Christopher Kunz drawing inspiration from the “evasive beauty of aerial landscapes and natural transparencies. Images taken from beyond the troposphere blur the natural into abstract shapes and paths. Transparent Landscapes combines a sense of natural movement with Nicholas K’s ever present interest in functionality, such as detachable scarves and two-in-one Men’s jackets…”

Electrolux Mobile Kitchen

Selectism - electrolux-cooking-laptop-01

According to Yanko Design “The Electrolux Mobile Kitchen Concept combines three basics of modern-day kitchens: a 4-tier induction cooking element, an efficient cutting board and a touchscreen computer for your recipes, downloads and nutrition facts.” We’d beg to differ on the last basic (when has a touchscreen computer ever been a basic?) but that’s clearly the thinking behind this mobile kitchen. We’re not sure who it’s aimed at, but we’d hazard a guess that it’s for the man who thinks a portable hob just isn’t good enough. It does look interesting though. Useless, but interesting.

Martine Rose Bengal Striped Shirt

Selectism - martine-rose-striped-shirt-01

We never tire of bringing this up but back when we first posted Martine Rose here we were accused of jumping the shark. Of course, those were dark days – everyone was talking about how the 60s were the golden era of clothing and how anyone who wore anything other than oxford shirts were terrorists. The last point may have been made up, but you get our gist – that we’ve always liked Martine Rose’s shirts and this is no different. And despite what you’ve read from your latest conservative blogger you can wear this shirt just as much as a navy sportcoat. (Daniel Jenkins)

Bespoken Spring/Summer 2012 Presentation

Bespoken Spring/Summer 2012 Presentation

Bespoken sticks to the casualness of Spring 2012 with their presentation during New York Fashion Week. The tone is set with the greys in the collection against trenches and jackets where garments give the wearer some space to exhale safely. Upper class casual done right.
