warehouse stripe tee 01 Warehouse Striped T shirt

When is a striped tee not just a striped tee? When it’s a striped tee from Warehouse of course. Ok, it’s still just a t-shirt with stripes on it but these guys know how to make even the simplest of styles just that bit more special. This one is for those afraid to get too breton on that neckline, still round enough to avoid any sailor comparisons. Find it at Mr Mudd and Mr Gold

hestra gloves 01 Hestra Deerskin Gloves

If we’re ever slapped by a pair of gloves in a foppish old school manner we want it to be this pair. Oi Polloi offer us this deerskin model by Hestra, we like the wool cuffs which will ensure any potential cold drafts around the wrist area will be kept at bay. Find them here.

pharma 01 Pharma Exhibition at Cooper Union

Pharmaceutical companies, a controversial topic and here is neither the time or the place to get into that, but what can’t be denied is the brilliance of their ads in the 1950’s, brought to us via CR Blog. No wonder with the likes of Paul Rand and Herb Lubalin on board designing. Graphics of the eye popping variety were used to bridge the gap between the sterile, unfriendly world of the lab and the every day consumer. The results are a mid-century marvel. An exhibition in November at The Herb Lubalin Study Center,  Cooper Union NYC will delve a little deeper.

A nice video from British brand Private White V.C. Head designer Nick Ashley, formerly of Kenzo, Dunhill and Tod’s and for 70s floral fans, son of the legendary Laura Ashley, is a strong believer in keeping things Traditional. The brand itself is inspired by Private Jack White, a decorated military man, pattern cutter, garment factory owner and by all accounts a very stylish fellow. Made in Manchester, the brand gives us a sheep n’ heavy machinery filled look at the production process at its home in the North.

8.15 August Fifteenth

0815 00 8.15 August Fifteenth

Hickorees point us in the direction August Fifteenth, now stocked both online and at their second floor store in Brooklyn. The date refers to the end of WW2 in Japan and also the start of  Woodstock in 1969, so safe to to say these guys are all Peace and Love. We’re not going to pretend the line doesn’t have some obvious heritage influences however all things in small doses, this certainly feels simple and pared down enough to avoid any screaming olden days references. Quilted jackets, moleskin shirts, corduroy, Harris Tweed and flannel all make an appearance. Head over to Hickorees.

Frank Gehry Outside The Box Exhibition in Hong Kong

Think Silly gives us a local look at the Frank Gehry exhibition open in Hong Kong. “We have enhanced our living experience by mixing the vast range of mediums on offer and pushing our boundaries of creativity from the ways we manipulate space and materials. Canadian American Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry is one of the masters of this craft… By breaking the rules of traditional architectural blueprints, Gehry has emphasized heavily on the notion of creativity. With his expertise in quick thumbnail sketches and the help of present cutting edge technology, they have enabled his ideas to turn into reality successfully.”

01. Matthew Herbert Makes a Record Completely from a Pig (from birth to plate)

“You can always count on Matthew Herbert. The counter-cultural electronic music icon has done a lot with his talent, uncompromising ear, and dedication to using found sounds in his music. Composed entirely of sounds sourced from the life and death of a British pig, One Pig Selectism | Around the Web is the artist’s most recent (and most controversial) album.” (coolhunting)

02. The Microbial Home by Philips

“For the 2011 edition of Dutch Design Week, Netherlands-based giant Philips will be showing five lifelike models of concepts for the Microbial Home, a forward looking group of design concepts that represent an innovative and sustainable approach to energy, waste, lighting, food preservation, cleaning, grooming, and human waste management.” (moco)

03. Red Sox Fans Ask Siri To Help Stop the Pain

“For those Red Sox fans still seeking solace — and for many, the pain and bewilderment seems to be lingering — the folks at Grantland (specifically thereliably entertaining Mark Lisanti) kindly put together this article, whichpurports to consult another recently popular source of wisdom about the Red Sox, epic collapses, and the meaning of existence: Siri, the computer assistantbundled into the new Apple iPhone.” (nyt6thfloor)

04. Charles Bukowski on Censorship

“Thank you for your letter telling me of the removal of one of my books from the Nijmegen library. And that it is accused of discrimination against black people, homosexuals and women. And that it is sadism because of the sadism.  The thing that I fear discriminating against is humor and truth.” (lettersofnote)
