Umit Benan Crewneck Sweater

Selectism - umit-benan-crewneck-sweater-01

Umit Benan’s got people now. What we mean by that is that Umit Benan looks like he has a following and that people, for lack of a better or more emo phrase, get him. The war of the crewnecks is one that’s still raging around these menswear streets, here’s another late entry into the warzone. We know authentically made jumpers have their place but we’re not wearing some itchy jumper for the sake of ‘realness’. We prefer the Rick Ross-esque approach to authenticity. (The Corner)

First Look | Grenson G Zero

Selectism - grenson-g-zero-01

Despite sounding like the name for a new type of Pepsi, G Zero is the new line from Grenson. They started out with a basic remit: creating the best quality shoe they could make. With this they’ve made a shoe that uses closed channel stitching, hand painted soles and burnished calf lining. Sounds nice. It’s available exclusively at Mr Porter.

Maison Martin Margiela Cable Knit Detail Sweater

Selectism - martin-margiela-cricket-sweater-01

Our pound for pound favourite brand have done it again. Drawing inspiration from the classic cricket sweater, there’s just enough of the twist – and the twist is so important – to pique our interest. The bib style can be hit or miss on knitwear – you are very close to looking like a waiter sometimes – but it works here. (Por Vocacao)

Archival Clothing Rugby Shirt

AC Shirt 1 Archival Clothing Rugby Shirt

It’s hard not to feel weary of rugby shirts. The skin tight numbers currently on show at the World Cup aren’t really our thing and as much as we like the old school variety they instantly make us think of braying Hooray Henrys swigging pints at the student union bar. However, we’ll set our prejudices aside, especially when it comes to Archival Clothing who rarely put a foot wrong. This 10 ounce cotton knitted jersey is produced in Oregon by Columbiaknit. Soft but tough enough to withstand the most violent of scrums, we might just have to rethink our view on this old classic.

warhol kids book 01 Andy Warhol Childrens Illustrations

Did you know Andy Warhol was a children’s illustrator? It wasn’t all loft parties and hanging out with Edie apparently. Brain Pickings enlightens us to the High Priest of Pop Art’s previous career. As a freelance artist in the 50’s he found himself at Doubleday illustrating kids books, his drawings a little psychedelic in nature, we’re fans of pre-Studio 54 Andy’s work.

steve alan cardigan 01 Steven Alan Nordic Cardigan

Steven Alan attempts a Donegal meets Norway knit with much success. These high neck cardigans remind us of the traditional Guernsey models so you can throw the Channel Islands into that mix too. Whatever its heritage, this is a warmer option in the cardigan world with the full button up front. A lambswool mix with Corozo nut buttons, it’s available in three varieties, Red, Vanilla and Navy.

Eye Sea Vintage Film Posters

eyesea posters 01 Eye Sea Vintage Film Posters

Creative Review point us towards Eye Sea, retailers of amazing vintage film posters. Their website is heavy with Polish stock, these designs from the 60s and 70s have garnered a cult following over the years. The communist government of the period controlled the film industry and recruited respected artists who were given complete creative freedom and as a consequence chose to ignore the movie’s stars and go mad with their designs. CR blog have a short interview with the guys behind the shop, visit the store for more.

Selectism - Julie-Faure-Fvf-01

01. Julie Faure (pictured)

“Julie is a young business woman, who has taken her love for organic food, retro fashion and created her own communication company mixing her passions to luxury and sustainable development. Her apartment is her own beautiful creation, which mixes her close to ideal dwelling with her work space; everything from her dog Malitzia (that loves to be photographed), old photographs of her grandparents nicely arranged in a cabinet, to her antique jewelry, works together seamlessly. In this sweet and airy afternoon interview, she shows us her vintage universe, her fascinating objects and her passions beyond fashion and nature.” (Freunde Von Freunden)

02. Matthew Carter’s timeless typographic masthead for Private Eye magazine

“Tony Rushton has been art director of satirical magazine Private Eye for 49 of its 50 years. The fortnightly is celebrating its half-century with a small, free exhibition in two rooms at the Victoria & Albert museum.

I interviewed Rushton prior to the opening of the show, close by a wall covered with 50 of its distinctive covers (below), writes John L. Walters.” (Eye Magazine)

03. That’s Lester Bowie Baby

“Gotta love Lester; playful, challenging, always restless Lester. Ever see The Art Ensemble Of Chicago? A complete assault on the senses – all six of them. The musicians would come on stage and take you on a crazy journey thro’ the past, the present and onto the future of music – Great Black Music, as they’d announce at the end of the show. So extreme; from the verge of collapse, the music would magically become something beautiful and mesmeric, and yet with the threat, (or promise, maybe) of anarchy never far away.” (Garmsville)

04. For Boxing Pay-Per-Views In 2011, Skip The Main Events And Watch The Undercards

“For a long time, the conventional wisdom among boxing promoters was that fans only paid for the main events of pay-per-view cards, and that spending cash on the undercard fights was a money pit. As such, hardcore fans grumbling about poor undercards has been one of the more serial grumbles of their beleaguered fandom. I quote them directly: “Rabble, rabble.”

But in 2011, it’s the main events that are leaving fans uttering “Rabble, rabble.” And it’s the undercards that are reminding them why they love the sport, whether by the design of promoters or lucky accident.” (Queensbury Rules)

Victorinox Swiss Army Tomo Series

Victorinox Swiss Army show us that they too are more than willing to re-imagine their iconic pocket tools for the modern consumer. Their new Swiss Army Tomo series (Japanese for ‘friend’ or ‘companion’) was designed by Kazuma Yamaguchi, who took a very minimalistic approach to the classic form by placing the toolset inside a molded rectangular handle. No compromise of the essential tools is made with the Swiss Army Tomo design; a blade, a nail file with cleaner and scissors are packed nicely into the sleek form. The Tomo is available in blue Victorinox Swiss Army Tomo Pocket Knives, green Victorinox Swiss Army Tomo Pocket Knivespink Victorinox Swiss Army Tomo Pocket Knives, lemon Victorinox Swiss Army Tomo Pocket Knives and other colors.
