history museum utah1 Natural History Museum of Utah

Salt Lake City may not strike you as a hotbed of architectural innovation but the Natural History Museum of Utah might have a thing or two to say about that. NY based architects Ennead, took the $103 million budget and created the Rio Tinto center over 163,000 sq ft at the below the Rocky Mountains’ Wasatch Range.

A research center as well as exhibition space, the outside is wrapped in 42,000 square feet of standing seam copper. The structure is formed by a series of terraces designed to follow the lines of the surrounding environment, with the whole project built to gold certificate energy and environmental design standards. An incredible feat in even more impressive surroundings, tip: wallpaper

Warehouse Duck Digger Shirt

warehouse shirt 01 Warehouse Duck Digger Shirt

Oh Warehouse, you really are spoiling us. Let’s not pretend we’re tired of chambray. We weren’t even going to mention the C word but it’s time to be loud and proud. The fact is it’s a really nice fabric and it’s that bit more flexible than denim when it comes to shirting. It goes with everything and sometimes, when we get together with friends and we’re all accidentally wearing our chambray shirts, we pretend we’re in an old prison movie planning our escape using our enamel gruel dishes and some hand drawn blueprints. Erm, anyway, Mr Mudd & Mr Gold will help you out on this one.

Yuketen Cordovan Keyfob (Keychain)

yuketen keychain 02 Yuketen Cordovan Keyfob (Keychain)

Another Christmas list idea. Start throwing out those hints now, this fob is 100% cordovan goodness. We’re not sure what the leather equivalent of the denim Texas Tuxedo is, but if you want to make a full on luxury hide statement match this to your Cordovan shoes and belt and let the sweet times roll. A Yuketen badge on one side and a Horween leather stamp on the other, Norse Store has them.

hudson bay book 01 Hudsons Bay Company Book

A little textile history from Assouline. Hudson’s Bay have been at the forefront of the nu-blanket movement but many currently sporting their rainbow stripes may not know the history of this fine Canadian institution. 300 years in the business, The bay is one of the oldest commercial enterprises in the world. Originally fur traders, the search for skins lead them to form relationships with Native Americans and blankets were traded for pelts with the number of stripes (points) denoting weight and size. Today the company sells all manner of goods and is represented by several subdivisions in Canada.

The book, Hudson’s Bay Company, offers a detailed insight into the company with over 200 illustrations and a forward by Vanity Fair’s Graydon Carter.

Selectism | Around The Web

Selectism - blue-hour-new-01

01. New (Pictured)

Brian W. Ferry adjusts to New York again. (The Blue Hour)

02. Alex Ariza: “Arum is a greedy pig…Bob is the one interfering”

“It’s not about what’s best for the fighter It’s clear as to why the Pacquaio-Mayweather fight has never happened. It’s always about what’s best for Bob and his agenda…let me ask you something, why is it that Bob can do a co-promotion with everybody else out there? He can do a co-promotion with anyone, DiBella, this guy, that guy, but he won’t do a co-promotion when it comes to Manny Pacquaio fighting somebody. Whoever Manny fights, he has to fight in-house.” (Fight Hype)

03. Luxury’s anti-social (media) brigade

“By now it’s a truism of the Facebook age that social media allows relatively small brands or individuals to attain audiences far larger than they would traditionally have reached; the barriers to entry are so low, and the potential users so high. So it’s a bit of a shocker to see the latest study from L2, the digital think tank, which looked at small-to-mid-size European luxury fashion brands and their “digital IQ” (ie, how well they use the digital space for etail/communication/marketing) and discover they pretty much … suck.” (FT)

04. Joseph Gordon-Levitt: ‘Luck has a lot do with it’

“I’m moving through the lobby of one of Los Angeles’ whimsy-luxe hotels on my way to meet actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a penthouse suite. Surrealist flourishes abound: chairs in the shapes of lips and twigs, and full-size horse statues that double as lamps. The overall effect is African ski lodge meets Mad Men, glazed with a dollop of melting clock. The setting is fitting, given Gordon-Levitt’s eclectic career. He has morphed from the androgynous alien kid in long-running 90s TV hit Third Rock from the Sun to the teen gay hustler in Gregg Araki’s 2004 film Mysterious Skin, bouncing on through characters as varied as (500) Days of Summer’s lovelorn romeo, Hesher’s charismatically violent burnout, and Inception’s corporate dream-fiddling crook.” (Guardian)

The BMW M Table by Jason Phillips

Industruial and furniture designer, Jason Phillips of Greensboro, NC reinterpeted the iconic logo of the BMW M Series automobiles into this well executed table. Powder-coat finished in the logo’s three colors, the BMW M Table sits on a slight lean, designating in many respects the speed and power of the original vehicle that inspires its form.

Marni Wool-Blend Sweater

Selectism - marni-wool-sweater-01

You might want to get your hands on Marni now. In a few months time you’ll be able to say, ‘I liked Marni before they collab’ed with H&M’. You can also say you’re not into polyblends, which the H&M collaboration will almost certainly consist of.

Anyway, true gentleman don’t queue overnight for clothes – a made up gentleman’s rule, but it’ll probably make its way into one of those lists. Mr Porter has them.

Church’s Footwear – Spring/Summer 2012

Selectism - churchs-ss12-01

Church’s have released images of their SS12 collection and, as always, we’ve taken our pick of the bunch. The collection isn’t as Prada-esque as the last one, which is a good thing. As you can see above, they’re still fans of a good red brick sole, which we don’t mind in moderation. Elsewhere there’s blue suede tassel loafers, and a few handsome brogues. Not to mention more red brick.

Take a leap to see more.
