Our good friend, Eugene Kan over at Hypebeast shares his eight holiday picks for 2011. The Hong Kong based writer and thinker clearly knows what he want for the holidays – many of those gifts are subtle reminders of his years in North America. The late Harvey Pekar’s final work comes to us in March 2012 with the graphic novel, Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland. The graphic novel is a history of Pekar’s home city of Cleveland an we view it through his narration of its industrial highs and lows. Artist, Joseph Remnant illustrates the 128 page Cleveland in the style we would expect.

The great Alan Moore (Watchmen) introduces the new graphic novel: “Never trafficking in fiction, his work studiously avoids narrative flash and the twist-ending storytelling gimmickry that tends to draw attention to the writer rather than to what his or her writing is about.” Published by Top Shelf. Fantastic Man is recommending this “rare” floral based scent by Edition de Parfum’s Frédéric Malle, worked with Dominique Ropion. They mention that it smells like a “good” gin and tonic. We just hope in that it wafts in a way that does not label the wearer as drinking in the mid-afternoon day – which would be fine in some cities.

Jordan Hufnagel likes bikes. He rides them a lot and when not spinning around Portland Oregon he’s designing and building them. His latest project is the Porteur/City bike, the result of a years work to create his perfect bike. As you can see it’s pretty good looking but we’re told it’s also a joy to ride. But seriously, look at it,  handsome right?

Anyway, this features “a custom fitted hand built frame, fork, stem and rack.All designed to have a clean look and intuitive function.” A lot of the bits n’ pieces that make up the frame were made in Jordan’s own house with much love care and attention no doubt. It’s a limited run and if you’re looking for a Christmas present to make everyone elses efforts seem pathetic then this is it. More over here.

Mister Freedom has knocked up some excellent scarves using much sought after Boro textiles. This traditional Japanese patchwork indigo fabric is the holy grail for anyone who enjoys watching blue fade. As Mr Loiron describes; ‘The fabrics are assorted, ranging from circa 1850′s~1930′s, and selected from our textile archives. Home spun, cotton, hemp, natural indigo, katazome prints, plaids, solids…’ Each piece is individual and very much limited (there’s only so much antique folk fabric scraps to go round y’know) each with its own leather ring slider to keep it in place. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native Aaron Hobson has turned everyone’s favourite voyeuristic map system into the basis of his photographic series ‘Cinemascapes’. Trawling the globe from the comfort of his laptop, he has scanned thousands of images to find that one shot to transform into something special.

Using photoshop and various other pieces of electronic wizardry – urban and surbubab, populated and unpopulated become cinematic scenes. Everything has a little sinister edge, Gregory Crewdson without the floating bodies, more at at Flavorwire.

We take a look at what’s new for Spring Summer 2012 from Prps and PRPS Goods and Co. The mainline focuses more on denim with some nice pleated jackets, chambray and light denim shirts. For those who like that pre-worn look, plenty of washes and cuts to choose from. As the brand describes it “Bruised never broken – the garments are hand finished with the most authentic processes forming layers of beautifully worn-in creases, nicks and tears”

PRPS Goods and Co. has a more summery feel with printed tees, light anoraks, sun faded chinos and check shirts. Designer Donwan Harrell wanted to keep a classic American look with this collection and was apparently inspired by ‘Jaws’. If you find teeth marks on anything you’ve had prior warning.

It’s mid-december, which means it’s now officially ’silly to buy anything for full price when it’ll be going on sale in two weeks’ time. We do admit that the name needs some work. But if you have an especially lovely partner who’s into all this dressing nice lark then this jacket would be a nice little gift. And of course, the contrast sleeves mean that it’ll look equally as fetching on you should you decide to keep it for yourself. (End)
