Brainpickings introduce us to Nicholas de Monchaux’s  Spacesuit: Fashioning Apollo Spacesuit: Fashioning Apollo Book,  the history of the 21 layers that make up the ultimate piece of techwear. Playtex, better known as bra makers, won the prized Apollo suit contract over its military and industrial competitors and went on to create a piece of history. “On July 12, 1969, only 21 layers of fabric, most gossamer-thin, stood between Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin and the lethal desolation of a lunar vacuum.” Published by MIT Press. Available from Amazon Spacesuit: Fashioning Apollo Book.
